8/31 Minor League Report! CARR!

Binghamton 6, New Britain 9

Dylan Owen was not good in his final start of the season, but he ended his year in AA, which already gives him more success then some people had expected from the short righty. Owen's first full season in the pros cannot be described as anything other then a complete success. Though he gave up 6 hits and 6 runs in 5 innings today, he ended his year with a 13-7 record and a 3.66 era in 27 GS, over 150 innings. He walked just 42 and struck out 131. Owen is on track to begin the 2009 season in AA and split his age 22/23 season there. Eric Brown gave up 3 runs in 2 innings, and Al Reyes pitched a perfect 8th. Reyes is slated to come up and help a beleaguered Mets bullpen.

Fernando Martinez is rallying to end his season, he had 2 more hits today, and heading into the Mets final game, is batting .287. Mike Carp went 1 for 2 with a HBP and walk, and is squarely at .300. Barring a 20 inning 0 for 10 (or something equally wacky), he should set a career high for AVG and OBP this season. Jose Coronado also had a multi hit game, while Caleb Stewart (0 for 4, .279), Josh Petersen (0 for 3, BB, .293) and Jon Malo (0 for 4, K, .261) took 0-fers.

On a scary note, Ambi Concepcion left this game in the first inning with a head injury. As we've seen (unfortunately) this season, head injuries are nothing to take lightly. All the best to Ambi.

Nick Carr's suffered through a complete wasted season, but his last 4 outings provide a lot to be excited about for 2009. His final start today may've been his best of the year. He fired 6 shutout innings, allowing 5 hits and striking out 8. In his last 4 outings, he's gone 21 innings, allowing 11 hits, 2 runs, with a 10/18 BB/K, a 2-0 record and a sparkling 0.86 era. His overall numbers aren't even worth mentioning in light of his late season turnaround (3-12, 5.22 in 26 games, 119 innings).

Greg Veloz and Ezequiel Carrera had multi hit games in the 1-2 spots in the order, Carrera getting his 12th triple (second in the system to Jose Reyes' 17). Lucas Duda hit his 11th homer of the season, he's bookended the season with very good months (but struggled big time from May to July). The bottom third of the order (Jason Jacobs, Jacob Elgsti, Luis Rivera) went 0 for 10 with 7 Ks.

Savannah 2, Charleston 10

More then anything else, tonight was a bullpen failure from the Gnats, as Samuel Martinez and Rhiner Cruz combined to turn a 5th inning 2-0 deficit into a 10-1 deficit by the end of the 8th. Phillips Orta didn't pitch particularly well in his final outing of the season, giving up 2 runs on 6 hits and 4 walks in 4 innings, but he took his first SAL loss. He ends his season with a 4-5 record and a 2.17 era over 54 innings split between Kingsport (44 ip) and Savannah (10 ip).

The top third of the order (Luis Nieves, Carlos Guzman, Francisco Pena) went a combined 0 for 14 with 5 Ks. Stephen Welch had the other 0-fer for Savannah, he went 0 for 4 with 2 Ks to drop his Gnats average to .250. Joaquin Rodriguez had the lone multi hit game for the Gnats.

Scott Shaw danced in and out of trouble all afternoon, surrendering 10 hits and a walk in 5.1 innings, but just one run. Jimmy Johnson picked up his 5th win in relief with 3.2 shutout innings.

Wilmer Flores had his first rough game outside of Kingsport, going 0 for 3 to drop his AVG in Brooklyn to .438, and his average outside of Kingsport to 9 for 21 (.429). 8/30 Minor League Report! MOVIEL, Welch!

Binghamton 1, New Britain 7

Jose Sanchez had a chance to tie the BMets franchise record for wins today (the record is 14, held by Bill Pulsipher and Cory Lidle), but he was not on top of his game at all, surrendering 9 hits and 4 runs in 5 innings to end his season at 13-7 with a 3.83 era. Elvys Quezada worked the final 3 innings, allowing 4 hits and 3 runs.

According to Joe Demayo, Fernando Martinez' HR was "a bomb, and I mean a bomb". He hit off RockCat starter Ryan Mullins, a lefty. Mike Carp had 2 hits, and hit one to the warning track in left. Thanks to Coach Walter: Mark is a physical kid with good raw tools. He is a 6.9 runner with a plus arm and good power. He picked up switch-hitting late in his career and ended up putting the left-handed swing on the shelf for his junior and senior years at the University of New Orleans. Since getting into pro-ball he has started switch-hitting again and how successful he is left-handed may very well determin how far and how fast he moves up the ladder.

Thanks to Coach Robert Shabansky: Tyler is 6'6" 200lb, set school records for avg., hits, x-base hits. He was first team all conference and region. He is a 6.7 runner, with plus arm and power. Probably would have had 10 or more home runs if we didn't play at such a big field (365 right and left field lines and 420 to center). We play in a wood bat conference as well. He played right field for us primarily but also played 16 games at shortstop for me. Please let me know if you need anything else regarding Tyler.

8/29 Minor League Report! GEE, WILMER!

This report is dedicated to Chad Ocho Cinco.

New Orleans 11, Nashville 10 in 11 innings

Jon Niese was victimized by a couple of long Tony Gwynn Jr ABs tonight, he accounted for 22 of Niese's 65 pitches in 2.2 innings, otherwise, Niese was sharp in his tuneup start. He's on track to pitch for the Mets on September 2nd in Milwaukee. Good luck Jon!

Bobby Parnell, pitching in relief for the first time this season, was anything but sharp, he allowed 3 hits and 2 runs to blow the save. He threw 24 pitches in his inning of work, 15 of them for strikes. Carlos Muniz got crushed in 0.1 innings, giving up 3 runs on 4 hits (including a homer) and a walk.

The insane game saw Nashville come back from 6-2 down to take a 9-6 lead, only for New Orleans to tie it at 9 in the bottom of the 9th. Nashville took a 10-9 lead in the 11th, but the Zs rallied for 2 in the bottom half to win the damn game 11-10 on Chris Aguila's walkoff 2 run HR.

Salvador Paniagua's 2 run homer in the 9th was the difference, as the Mets beat the RockCats 3-1 in their final series of the season. Dillon Gee was fantastic yet again, allowing just 4 hits and a run in 7 innings to run his ERA to 1.33. He walked 1 and struck out 4. Gee's allowed just 23 baserunners in 27 AA innings, and is averaging 6.75 innings per start. Absolutely amazing from the 22 year old. Edgar Alfonzo picked up the win with a perfect 8th, Al Reyes loaded the bases in the 9th but tiptoed around trouble to pick up his first AA save.

Emmanuel Garcia was 2 for 5 out of the leadoff spot, the only Met with a multi hit game. Jose Coronado (0 for 4, run, BB, .256) and Shawn Bowman (0 for 4, 3 Ks, .257) took 0-fers.

Ugly ugly game for the Mets pitching staff. It was a bullpen game, and exhibits A, B and C were on display as to why the Mets won't be making the playoffs. Ambi Burgos got another inning in on his rehab, and it wasn't a good one, he allowed 2 runs (1 earned) on 2 walks. Ryan Coultas worked a scoreless 2nd, then all hell broke loose. Eric Niesen allowed 2 runs in his innings, Tim Stronach allowed 5 in his 2.1 innings, and for good measure IFer Jacob Elgsti allowed a run in the 7th.

The offense was stymied for a run on 4 hits, getting very little done. Greg Veloz (1 for 3, run, K, .239), Ezequiel Carrera (1 for 3, .260), Lucas Duda (1 for 3, 2b, RBI, .264) and Jason Jacobs (1 for 2, K, .226) had the hits, everyone else took 0-fers.

Wilmer. Flores.

Moving on, the Cyclones scored 3 in the 2nd, watched the Tigers answer back with 2, and then hung on by the skin on their chinny chin chins, winning 3-2. Jeff Kaplan got the win with 4.2 innings of scoreless relief in back of an ineffective Pedro P Martinez, and Yury Santana got the final out to pick up his 11th save.

Thanks to Coach John Verhoeven: Jimmy loves to pitch, has a rubber arm and never turns down an opportunity to pitch in a ball game even if he is not even close to 100%. He has a fastball that ranges from 87-90 MPH, outstanding curve ball and so-so change up. He has good command of all of his pitches and pitches to contact unless the situation calls for a strikeout. He has a perfect attitude for the pro game as he doesn't get too up or down on himself. My gut feeling is Jimmy is going to be in professional baseball for a long time.

Thanks to Coach Jeff Schexnaider: Kyle Suire is the hardest worker and possesed the most passion for the game of Baseball as anyone I have ever coached. He has always been an over achiever and very goal oriented. It is not by chance that he has been the Captain of every team he has been associated with. It is also not by chance that every team he has played for has won a championship. Given the opportunity to play every day I am sure he will be a favorite player in the Mets organization as well.

All the scoring in this game occured in the 7th inning on, as the Mets got 2 in the 7th and 3 in the 9th to win going away, 5-0. Tobi Stoner and 4 relievers combined on a 4 hit shutout, with Al Reyes notching another scoreless inning in his drive to join a ... very leaky Mets bullpen (to say the least!). Joe Hietpas picked up the win with a scoreless 6th. Stoner bounced back from the absolute shelling he took his last outing (1.1 ip, 9 h, 6 er) with 5 shutout innings, allowing 2 hits and 3 walks.

Shawn Bowman snapped out of a 7 for 38 slump in a HUGE way with 3 hits, including 2 doubles, scoring twice out of the 6 hole. Jose Coronado and Ambi Concepcion also had multi hit games, while Emmanuel Garcia (0 for 3, .244), Mike Carp (0 for 3, BB, .298), Josh Petersen (0 for 4, K, .300) and Jon Malo (0 for 2, 2 BBs, K, .265) took 0-fers.

Edgar Ramirez got the win in relief after Julio Polanco lasted just 3 innings, working in and out of all sorts of trouble. Polanco gave up 5 hits and 3 walks in his 3 innings. Ramirez worked 2 perfect innings to pick up his first FSL victory. Emary Frederick got the final out with the tying run on base, for his 8th save.

Ruben Tejada continued his late season surge, getting on base 3 times (he's 13 for his last 39, a .333 average). Josh Thole drove in both Met runs with a single in the 3rd, his only hit of the night. Thole also struck out twice, with those Ks, August will become his only month striking out more then 9 times (he's at 11). And for good measure, Jason LaVorgna gave up 3 runs in his inning of work to totally ice the game. Michael Powers A debut went much better, he worked 2 scoreless innings.

Stefan Welch's A debut went very well, he was 2 for 4 with 2 runs scored. Jefferies Tatford also had a multi hit game, while the top 2 in the order (R Pena, Guzman) were 0 for 9 with 5 Ks (Pena had the Golden Sombrero).

According to milb.com's preliminary writeup for the Arizona Fall League, Dan Murphy will be working out and playing at 2b. Of course, that assumes he's not on the postseason roster for the big club (and why wouldn't he be, the way he's hit/walked in the majors?). Still, it's good news that the Mets want him on the 09 team, and potentially signals the death knell for Luis Castillo.

And now, according to dembrooklynbums.com, Wilmer Flores will be playing SS for Brooklyn tonight, batting 7th. Kind of weird, huh? One game in Savannah, 2 for 5 with a run, and then to Brooklyn? Whatever.

St. Lucie 1, Palm Beach 9 - Game 2

The Mets faced the best pitching prospect you've never heard of in Nick Additon, and got shut down by him for the second consecutive outing. Additon, who gave up 3 hits in 7 innings on the 21st, gave up 3 hits in 6 innings tonight, and over 18 FSL innings, has given up 2 runs (1 earned), for a 0.50 era. Nick Waechter opposed him tonight and was not good at all, giving up 7 hits and 6 runs (4 earned) in 3 innings for his first FSL loss. Nick Abel gave up 3 runs (2 earned) in 2 innings just for good measure.

The Mets managed just 4 hits, by 4 different players, while 5 took 0-fers. Marlon Anderson (0 for 3, BB, K), Greg Veloz (0 for 3, run, .259), Ezequiel Carrera (0 for 3, .263), Brahiam Maldonado (0 for 3, 2 Ks, .233) and Jason Jacobs (0 for 3, K, .229).

St. Lucie 2, Palm Beach 1 - Game 2

Brahiam Maldonado's 2 run homer in the 5th was enough for the Mets to earn a split with the Cardinals today. Emary Frederick, bouncing back off a very rough outing his last time out (0.1 ip, 2 h, 3 er, 2/3 bb/k), picked up the win with 1.2 innings of scoreless relief. German Marte picked up his 10th save. Thanks to Brian Ormiston, Assistant Director of Athletics Communications for this:

Mitch was somewhat inconsistent this past season, but had a great breaking ball and mixed it in with his fastball very well when he was "on". He had seven innings of no-hit ball vs. Wagner March 17 before a reliever finished the no-hitter. He shut down Tulane on three hits in 7.0 innings and four hits in 6.0 innings vs. East Carolina. But then he had a few outings where he just lost it. For example, he gave up 8 in 3.1 innings at Houston, 7 in 2.1 innings at Marshall, and 6 in 1.2 innings vs. UAB.

Mitch’s pickoff move is one of the best I have ever seen. He had six last year for us, while the rest of the pitching staff combined had just four. He was injured and redshirted in 2007, so that could have affected him as well.

C University of New Haven 9/11/85 R/R

Thanks to Coach Raphael Cerrato: I had the opportunity to coach Michael for three years at UNH. I have coached in college for 12 years (UNH, UMass, Brown university, and URI) and Michael probably has the best work ethic of any kid I have ever coached. He was an excellent leader in our program and put up big offensive numbers in his four years here. He is an outstanding kid from a great family. Defensively, Michael throws very well and is extremely accurate. He threw out nearly 50% of would be runners in college, which is an incredible percentage. Michael blocks well and handles a pitching staff very well but can improve his receiving skills.

Offensively, Michael has good power potential at the pro level and has a potential to be a solid hitter. He will probably not hit for a very high average but if he can improve his receiving and hit with some power he has a chance to play for a while.

---------------------
Round 1, Pick 18: Ike Davis
---------------------
1B/OF/P Arizona State, 3/22/87, L/L

2006: 79 for 240, 39 runs 20 2b, 2 3b, 9 HR, 65 RBI, 20/58 BB/K, .329/.387/.542/.929

2007: 80 for 231, 22 2b, 7 HR, 59 RBI, 6/8 SBs, 26/39 BB/K, .346/.400/.532/.932

2008: 82 for 213, 64 runs, 26 2b, 3b, 16 HR, 76 RBI, 31/34 BB/K, .385/.457/.742/1.200

Hitting Ability: Davis tends to be a slow starter, but showed a smooth swing from the left side.
Power: Davis has some untapped raw power that could be developed as a pro.
Running Speed: He's a tick below Major League average in terms of speed.
Base running: Not a base-clogger by any means, he's a decent baserunner.
Arm Strength: Also a pitcher who throws about 87 mph, his arm plays fine from the outfield or first base.
Fielding: He's a solid corner outfielder and can handle himself well around first.
Range: He's got good instincts in the outfield and would have no trouble covering enough ground to stay there.
Physical Description: Davis has a good, projectable and athletic body.
Medical Update: Healthy.
Strengths: Smooth swing from the left side; good athleticism; good bloodlines -- former big league pitcher Ron Davis is his dad.
Weaknesses: He doesn't always repeat his swing, leading to incomplete at-bats at times. Sometimes he appears to be a little low energy.
Summary: On radars since high school, when he was a 19th-round pick of the Rays in 2005, the son of ex-big leaguer Ron Davis has a sweet left-handed swing that should generate more power in the future. He's not speedy, but he is a solid base runner and would be fine as a corner outfielder or first baseman at the next level.

Round 1, Pick 22: David Reese Havens
---------------------
SS South Carolina, 10/20/86, L/R

2006: 62 for 239, 40 runs, 12 2b, 3b, 4 HR, 40 RBI, 30/37 BB/K, .259/.348/.368/.716

2007: 64 for 234, 38 runs, 12 2b, 5 HR, 43 RBI, 3/4 SBs, 21/42 BB/K, .274/.337/.389/.726

2008: 89 for 248, 76 runs, 13 2b, 2 3b, 18 HR, 57 RBI, 58/44 BB/K, .359/.486/.645/1.131

Focus Area Comments
Hitting Ability: Havens has improved over time as a hitter and makes good contact with a very patient approach.
Power: Excellent bat speed does generate some pop and he could hit 10-15 homers, maybe 15-20 at best.
Running Speed: He's a well below-average runner.
Base running: Very alert on the bases and armed with good instincts, he won't hurt you.
Arm Strength: He's got a plus arm at short.
Fielding: He catches the ball well when he gets to it.
Range: His range is restricted because of his lack of foot speed. Some feel he'll have to move to third.
Physical Description: Havens is really put together with a strong, athletic body.
Medical Update: He had a sprained thumb in the fall, but he's 100 percent now.
Strengths: A good approach at the plate with the ability to make solid contact; good knowledge of how to play the game.
Weaknesses: Lack of speed, which could force a move to third.
Summary: A legitimate prospect in high school, teams were scared off because of a strong commitment to South Carolina. He's improved steadily in his three years there and has evolved into a good all-around hitter with outstanding plate discpline. He may need to move to third down the road because of his lack of range, but his smarts in the field may at least give him the opportunity to play his way off of short as a pro. At either spot, he's sure to go off the board pretty quickly.

Round 3, Pick 100: Kirk Nieuwenhuis
---------------------
OF Azusa Pacific University 8/7/87, L/R

Thanks to Coach Paul Svagdis: Kirk Nieuwenhuis...outstanding all around athlete...has the ability with time and experience to become a five tool player...runs well and will run better as he continues training...has a plus arm from the outfield...can hit with power...this is something that he will develop as he matures professionally...has much more room to grow as a baseball player with experience at the professional level. Hits behind the ball pretty well which creates decent backspin on his balls...at times his balls will just carry and carry in the left center gap...

Outstanding person...excellent quite leader...coachable...

Hope this helps-

Focus Area Comments
Hitting Ability: He's not a pure hitter, not being consistent enough from at-bat to at-bat.
Power: He's got pretty good power and showed home run pop to the pull side.
Running Speed: He grades out as average, at best.
Base running: He handled himself OK on the bases.
Arm Strength: He wasn't tested in this game, but he's shown a strong arm as a guy who's done some pitching.
Fielding: He's playing CF now and looks OK, but he may not be able to stay there in the future.
Range: He has average range in center right now.
Physical Description: Ratliff is a big, strong, left-handed hitter.
Medical Update: Healthy.
Strengths: Power bat, with home-run potential.
Weaknesses: Inconsistency. He hasn't shown the ability to make consistent contact.
Summary: College power hitters are always going to draw interest, even inconsistent ones. Ratliff hasn't always been able to make consistent contact, but he manages to show enough to remain intriguing. A center fielder for now, the team who thinks he'll turn his sometimes power into something frequent enough to man a corner spot will take a chance on him.

Round 5, Pick 164: Charles "Dock" Doyle
---------------------
C Coastal Carolina University 3/24/86 L/R

SCOUTING REPORT: Doyle, a product of a local high school, played in just 13 games his first two years at Coastal Carolina, taking a red-shirt his second year. He then hit just .318-2-18 as a part-time catcher a year ago. Still, the Braves saw something in his athletic build and lefthanded bat, and took a late-round flier on him in 2007 as a draft-eligible sophomore. Though he didn’t sign, the confidence Doyle gained by just being drafted propelled him into 2008 and he was a different player this season. By playing everyday for the first time, he got comfortable at the plate, took quality at-bats and hit .370-16-63 as the Chanticleers No. 3 hitter, earning Big South Conference player of the year honors. His defensive skills, notably his arm strength and receiving ability, also showed a marked upgrade. There’s concern that Doyle comes from too much of a low slot on his throws, causing his balls to sail, but he has a fast release and is quick and agile behind the plate.

Round 8, Pick 254: Eric Campbell
---------------------
3B Boston College 4/9/87, R/R

Thanks to Coach Mik Aoki: Eric is first and foremost a great kid. From a baseball standpoint, he is a very good player. Defensively he has great hands and feet. He’s got a good arm but it has just enough funk in his arm action that I could see his future be at 1B in pro ball but his hands and feet are so good that I would let him play himself out of 3B before ever making a switch. Offensively, he is a very good hitter - he has excellent hand-eye. He’ll hit for a good combo of power and average. I do believe that he will develop into a very solid power guy. His homerun numbers in college do not really show how much power he has. As he learns to be able to put a little lift in his swing, his power number will go up. He loves to play baseball and plays hard all the time. He is generally quiet but has good leadership skills. You guys got a good one.

Hope that helps.

1. There is NO Binghamton game tonight, they have a day off, lol.

2. Jon Niese IP by season:

2006: 133.2
2007: 143.1
2008: 161.1

If you look at the numbers, he's allowing less hits per IP in AAA, has cut his walk rate slightly from .3539/IP in AA to .3243/IP in AAA (3.18/9 in AAA to 2.92/9 in AAA), the reason his ERA is higher (3.04 in AA, 3.65 in AAA) is his HR rate has spiked dramatically (5 in 124.1 AA IP, 4 in 37 AAA IP).

Prospect Focus: Daniel Murphy

I did 3 of these last year...should be doing many more this year, both in and out of season. Enjoy

Splits courtesy www.minorleaguesplits.com

Murphy was selected in the 13th round of the 2006 draft out of Jacksonville University, where as a junior, he hit .398/.470/.534/1.004 with 10 2b, 3b, 6 HR in 221 ABs. He also stole 15/22 bases, and had a ridiculous 34/13 BB/K ratio. His K rate was an absurdly low .0588, and his BB/K ratio was an equally absurd 2.6154. He throws right and bats lefty.

He has shown a history of vast improvement in his plate discipline. His freshman year at Jacksonville, he hit .377/.455/.506/.961, with 5 2b, 3b, HR, in 77 ABs. He struck out 13 times, a K rate of .168, and a 9/13 BB/K ratio, or 0.6923. His sophomore season, he hit .329/.381/.429/.810, with 12 2b, 2 3b, 2 HR in 219 ABs, and a 11/23 BB/K ratio. His K rate was .105, and his BB/K ratio was 0.4783.

After the Mets took him, he played at 3 levels, Kingsport, Brooklyn, and the GCL. Overall, he batted .213/.315/.300/.615 in 80 ABs. He had a 12/7 BB/K ratio, and a 0.0875 K rate, and a 1.7143 BB/K ratio.

In 2007, Murphy was in St. Lucie, and he batted .287/.342/.429/.771 in 513 ABs, with 34 2b, 3 3b and 11 HR. He had a BB/K ratio of 44/63, or 0.6984. His K rate was .123. His lefty/righty splits show that he is more adapt at hitting RHP.

Murphy hit .257/.314/.362/.676 vs LHP, 39 for 152, with 5 2b, 3b, 3 HR, and an 11/19 BB/K ratio, or 0.5789. His K rate vs LHP was .132. Versus RHP, he hit .299/.353/.457/.810, 108 for 361, with 29 2b, 2 3b, 8 HR and a 33/44 BB/K ratio, or 0.7500. His K rate vs RHP was .122.

THE FUTURE: Murphy should be manning third base for the Binghamton Mets in 2008, and as with Mike Carp, how well he hits lefties will determine his future. Both Carp and Murphy can abuse RHP, however, how they fare vs LHP will determine whether they truly emerge as serious contenders to man 1b for the Mets in 2009.

UPDATE 2008: Murphy's enjoyed a meteroic rise through the farm system in 2008, and is in a LF platoon (with Nick Evans) for the Mets. As predicted (really it wasn't that much of a guess), Murphy opened the year in Binghamton, manning 3b. However, in late June, as Murphy emerged as a legit bat, the Mets opted to try Daniel at 2b, with mixed results (5 errors in 15 games). Then in August, Marlon Anderson's hamstring, which had never fully healed, flared up, which cleared the way for Murphy's callup. Since arriving in New York (Houston, actually), he has not stopped hitting, putting up a ridiculous .404/.491/.617/1.108 line through 47 ABs. What has really impressed Mets brass (and fans, for that matter) is Murphy's extraordinaryly advanced batting eye, he's got an 8/7 BB/K in the majors.

As we said, Murphy started out in Binghamton, where he put up a great .308/.374/.496/.870 line in 357 ABs. Counting his 14 AB rehab stint in Brooklyn, and his 4 AB cameo in New Orleans, Murphy's hitting .315/.379/.493/.872 (117 for 372, 26 2b, 3b, 13 HR, 39/48 BB/K) in the minor leagues this year, with a .8125 BB/K ratio, and a .129 K rate). As we highlighted last year, Murphy fared much better against RHP then LHP (.676 OPS vs LHP, .810 vs RHP). Well, Murphy turned that around in a big way this season. Against LHP this year, he hit .305/.363/.481/.844 (40 for 131, 9 2b, 3b, 4 HR, 10/18 BB/K), with a .5556 BB/K ratio, and a .137 K rate. Versus RHP, he hit .320/.385/.502/.887 (77 for 241, 17 2b, 9 HR, 29/30 BB/K), with a great .9667 BB/K ratio, and .125 K rate. As you can see from the numbers, Murphy's also improved his power this season, he hit 11 HR all of last year, and has 15 this season between the minors and majors. Also good, this improvement in power has not come at the expense of his K rate (.123 in 2007, .129 in 2008).

Over Murphy's 2+ seasons in the minor leagues, he's gotten just under 1000 ABs (965), and put up a decent line: .291/.353/.444/.797 (281 for 965, 61 2b, 4 3b, 26 HR, 95/118 BB/K), and has hit better versus RHP then LHP (.300/.364/.468/.832 vs RHP in 643 ABs, .273/.331/.394/.725 in 322 ABs vs LHP)

THE NEW FUTURE: The Mets have indicated they will be sending Murphy to winterball to play LF, which means that they view him as an answer to the LF spot in 2009. And as we've seen in his brief time in the majors, he stays in very well against lefties. This would afford top prospect Fernando Martinez a full season in AAA, too.

8/24 Minor League Report! Carp, Thole, Moviel!

New Orleans

Jon Niese had a very shaky outing, and right from the getgo he struggled immensely with his command, walking 2 and ending the first with almost as many balls (13) as strikes (15). He never could end up in a groove (outside of the 2nd inning), and wound up with 5 shaky innings, allowing 3 hits and 2 runs, walking 4 and striking out 8. He threw 103 pitches, elevated by 22 foul balls. Tim McNab came in to give up a pair in the 6th, turning a 6-2 game into a 6-4 game. The Zs scored one in the 7th to open a 3 run lead at 7-4. Eddie Camacho allowed a 2 run homer in the 8th to cut the Zs lead to 1 at 7-6, and it was Carlos Muniz - and NOT Eddie Kunz who caame in to try and save it for Niese.

Jose Sanchez gave up 2 runs on 2 hits in the first, and then went 6 more innings allowing just 4 hits, but he got a ND. Joe Hietpas faced 4 in the 8th and retired none, getting charged with 2 runs and his 5th loss.

The BMets had just 5 hits tonight, but did draw 4 walks, however, they left 6 on base and has one GIDP, so they scored just 2 runs. Mike Carp had the only multi hit game, his 4th in a row as he continues his rebound off a deep 150 AB slump which began on June 18th. He is now 18 for his last 44 with 8 runs, 6 2b, 3 HR, 7 RBI, and an off the charts 11/7 BB/K ratio. Fernando Martinez, however, took an 0-fer to snap a 6 for 17 stretch. Eric Niesen lasted just 1.2 innings, giving up 2 runs on 3 hits (2 homers) and 3 walks, but the Mets offense got him off the hook. Ryan Coultas, however, got ripped for 4 runs on 4 hits and 2 walks in 3 innings to take his 5th loss of the season.

The offense certainly did their job, pounding out 10 hits and 5 runs in 6 innings, but it wasn't enough on this day. Ruben Tejada, Josh Thole, DJ Wabick and Joe Holden had multi hit games, while Greg Veloz (0 for 3, BB, .294), Ezequiel Carrera (0 for 3, K, .268) and Brahiam Maldonado (0 for 3, K, .236) took 0-fers.

The St. Lucie bullpen is really bad, and it's going to keep the Mets from making the playoffs (as the 2nd half divisional winners). It also caused them to lose a ton of games in the 1st half, too.

Scott Moviel, much as Maikel Cleto did yesterday, served notice that he can push back against that IP wall. There was a 3 start stretch when he hit 100 IP that the wall punished him (0-1, 9.00 era, 3 GS, 12 IP, 19 H, 12 ER, 4/9 BB/K), but he's pushing back against said wall, his last 2 outings (including today's) have been very good (0-0, 0.82 era, 2 GS, 11 IP, 7 H, ER, 5/8 BB/K).

John Holdzkom enjoyed his best outing of the season, but he got a very tough luck ND, as Savannah was blanked for the first 8 innings. Holdzkom went 7, allowing just 2 hits, walking just 3 and striking out 9. But the game went into extras, and Holdzkom wasn't allowed to start the 8th, Rhiner Cruz went 2 innings to pick up his 2nd win.

The Gnats only had 2 hits themselves, this was a classic pitchers duel. Casey Craig's (1 for 3, run, HR, RBI, BB, K, .283, SB (24)) walkoff homer accounted for the only scoring in the game for either side. Jefferies Tatford (1 for 2, BB, K, .297) had the other hit for Savannah.

Maikel Cleto served notice that he's not completely burned out in 2008 tonight. His last 6 starts coming into tonight: 1-5, 7.94 era, 6 GS, 28.1 IP, 35 H, 25 ER, 9/14 BB/K. But tonight, he delievered a great game in the nightcap, going 6 strong, allowing just 3 hits and a run, striking out 8 for his 5th win of the season.

The offense feasted on Rome's bullpen the entire game (they went game by committee in the nightcap), with a 2 pronged 10 hit 8 walk attack. Despite putting up 8 run, they left 11 on base. Jefferies Tatford and Michael Parker had multi hit games, while Richard Pena (0 for 2, RBI, 2 BBs, .193), Joaquin Rodriguez (0 for 2, 2 BBs, .241) and Brad Hubbert (0 for 3, run, BB, 3 Ks, .181) took 0-fers.

Another night of offensive ineptitude, and it ended up costing the Cyclones a win. The Cyclones led 1-0 going to the 9th, but Stephen Clyne gave up 2 runs thanks to 2 hits and 2 errors (Lagares (1), Jimenez (4)), and Lowell ended up with the 2-1 win. Jenrry Mejia was brilliant tonight, the 18 year old held Lowell to just 1 hit over 6 innings with 6 Ks, but thanks to Clyne, got a ND.

The Cyclones had 9 hits and 2 walks, but left 9 on base, failing to score on numerous occasions. Eric Campbell was PH for after just 1 AB. Sean Ratliff (0 for 3, K, .203), who replaced him, took an 0-fer, as did JR Voyles (0 for 4, 3 Ks, .230), and Dock Doyle (0 for 4, 2 Ks, .224). Robert Carson was victimized by his defense, as Imbewer Alvarez (14) and Wilmer Flores (17) each committed errors, leading to 1 UER off Carson, that combined with the ER he gave up was enough to beat him tonight. Carson went 4.2 innings, allowing 5 hits and those 2 runs, walking 2 and striking out 4. Despite his very good ERA (1.76), he's 2-3 in Kingsport. Travis Babin rebounded from a string of horrific outings to pitch 4.1 innings of fabulous long relief, allowing just 2 hits.

The offense had just 6 hits and a walk, stranding 9. Patrick Maat drove the only run in for Kingsport with a 7th inning SF. Wilmer Flores took his 2nd straight 0-fer, and is now is in a 2 for 16 slump. Tobi Stoner got blitzed for 9 hits and 6 runs in just 1.1 innings tonight, as Binghamton was blown out 7-1. The bullpen did a very credible job in relief, with Eric Brown, Edgar Alfonzo and Tim LaVigne combining to allow just 4 hits and a run in 7.2 innings, but it was too big a hole to climb out of tonight for the offense.

The offense managed just 5 hits and a run tonight, with Mike Carp having 2 of the hits (including his 26th 2b). Josh Petersen (1 for 4, RBI, K, .312), Shawn Bowman (1 for 4, 2 Ks, .237) and Jose Coronado (1 for 3, .256) had the other hits. Everyone else took 0-fers.

The Mets were being no hit thru 5 innings, and then exploded for a 4 hit, 2 walk outburst in the 6th, to turn an 8-0 game into an 8-5 game, but Brahiam Maldonado struck out with the bases loaded and 2 down in the bottom of the 9th (every kids fantasy - minus the K), stranding the tying runs on base, so the comeback fell short.

Greg Veloz and Maldonado had multi hit games (Maldonado hit a 3 run homer to cap that 5 run inning), while Ezequiel Carrera (0 for 3, run, 2 BBs, 2 Ks, .270), Jason Jacobs (0 for 2, 2 BBs, 2 Ks, .235) and Joe Holden (0 for 4, K, .245) took 0-fers.

Raul Batis was the victim of horrific defense tonight, he gave up 9 hits and 7 runs (only 1 earned) in 3.2 innings, thanks to an error by Wilmer Flores, with 2 down and a run already in. And then Batis couldn't escape the inning, proceeding to give up 6 more runs. Zach Rosenbaum came in and was equally putrid, giving up 5 hits and 5 runs (3 earned) in 1.1 innings. Manuel Alvarez finished off the game with 4 good innings in long relief, but the KMets were in too deep of a hole.

The offense, put in a 12-0 hole after 4.5 innings, rallied with 3 in the 5th, 3 in the 6th and 2 in the 8th, but came up short in the rally attempt, falling 13-8.
