8/24 Minor League Report! Carp, Thole, Moviel!

Jon Niese had a very shaky outing, and right from the getgo he struggled immensely with his command, walking 2 and ending the first with almost as many balls (13) as strikes (15). He never could end up in a groove (outside of the 2nd inning), and wound up with 5 shaky innings, allowing 3 hits and 2 runs, walking 4 and striking out 8. He threw 103 pitches, elevated by 22 foul balls. Tim McNab came in to give up a pair in the 6th, turning a 6-2 game into a 6-4 game. The Zs scored one in the 7th to open a 3 run lead at 7-4. Eddie Camacho allowed a 2 run homer in the 8th to cut the Zs lead to 1 at 7-6, and it was Carlos Muniz - and NOT Eddie Kunz who caame in to try and save it for Niese.

Jose Sanchez gave up 2 runs on 2 hits in the first, and then went 6 more innings allowing just 4 hits, but he got a ND. Joe Hietpas faced 4 in the 8th and retired none, getting charged with 2 runs and his 5th loss.

The BMets had just 5 hits tonight, but did draw 4 walks, however, they left 6 on base and has one GIDP, so they scored just 2 runs. Mike Carp had the only multi hit game, his 4th in a row as he continues his rebound off a deep 150 AB slump which began on June 18th. He is now 18 for his last 44 with 8 runs, 6 2b, 3 HR, 7 RBI, and an off the charts 11/7 BB/K ratio. Fernando Martinez, however, took an 0-fer to snap a 6 for 17 stretch. Caleb Stewart (0 for 4, RBI, K, .285), Saloman Manriquez (0 for 4, .271), Jon Malo (0 for 3, BB, 2 Ks, .250) and Jose Coronado (0 for 3, RBI, K, .255) also took 0-fers.

Eric Niesen lasted just 1.2 innings, giving up 2 runs on 3 hits (2 homers) and 3 walks, but the Mets offense got him off the hook. Ryan Coultas, however, got ripped for 4 runs on 4 hits and 2 walks in 3 innings to take his 5th loss of the season.

The offense certainly did their job, pounding out 10 hits and 5 runs in 6 innings, but it wasn't enough on this day. Ruben Tejada, Josh Thole, DJ Wabick and Joe Holden had multi hit games, while Greg Veloz (0 for 3, BB, .294), Ezequiel Carrera (0 for 3, K, .268) and Brahiam Maldonado (0 for 3, K, .236) took 0-fers.

The St. Lucie bullpen is really bad, and it's going to keep the Mets from making the playoffs (as the 2nd half divisional winners). It also caused them to lose a ton of games in the 1st half, too.

Savannah 1, Rome 2 - Game 1

Scott Moviel, much as Maikel Cleto did yesterday, served notice that he can push back against that IP wall. There was a 3 start stretch when he hit 100 IP that the wall punished him (0-1, 9.00 era, 3 GS, 12 IP, 19 H, 12 ER, 4/9 BB/K), but he's pushing back against said wall, his last 2 outings (including today's) have been very good (0-0, 0.82 era, 2 GS, 11 IP, 7 H, ER, 5/8 BB/K).

The offense managed just 4 hits (all among the first 3 hitters) and a run, leaving 2 on base. Casey Craig (1 for 3, .284), Richard Pena (2 for 3, run, K, .198) and Francisco Pena (1 for 3, .263) had the hits, everyone else took 0-fers.

Really, if you take out Moviel's disasterous month of April, he's been one of the best pitchers in the Sally League: 8-4, 3.52 era, 19 GS, 102.1 IP, 98 H, 28/69 BB/K, 2.46 BB/9, 6.07 K/9, 1.23 WHIP, 5.39 IP/GS.

Savannah 4, Rome 1 - Game 2

Eric Beaulac gave up a run in 4.1 innings, on 2 hits and 3 walks, picking up a ND. Manuel Olivares worked 2.2 scoreless innings striking out 5 for his 3rd SAL win as the Gnats beat the Braves 4-1 in Game 2, splitting the DH.

The offense for the Gnats had 6 hits and 2 walks in 6 innings, turning them into 4 runs. Richard Pena had the only multi hit game, while Casey Craig (0 for 1, BB, K, .283), Carlos Guzman (0 for 2, RBI, .270), Nick Giarraputo (0 for 3, .232) and Tony Maccani (0 for 1, run, BB, K, .245) took 0-fers.

The Cyclones trailed 3-1 after 3, then ripped off 7 unanswered runs (1 in the 4th, 5th, 7th, 3 in the 8th, and 1 in the 9th) to win going away, 8-3. Pedro P Martinez lasted just an inning, giving up 2 hits, runs and walks. Matias Carrillo followed with 3 good innings of long relief, allowing just a run on 3 hits. Wendy Rosa allowed just a hit in 2 innings for the win, Roy Merritt went the final 3 for his 2nd save. In total, Brooklyn pitching struck out 14.

The offense had 9 hits and 3 walks, including 3 homers and 5 2b. Jose Jimenez (0 for 4, run, 2 Ks, .252) and Eric Campbell (0 for 4, BB, .263) took 0-fers, while Seth Williams and Jordan Abruzzo had multi hit games.

The Mets used big innings to overwhelm the Astros today, scoring 3 in the 1st, 3 in the 6th and 4 in the 8th to win easily, 10-4. 5 players had multi hit games, while Wilmer Flores (in a big slump) and Justin Garber (0 for 4, .264) took 0-fers. Wilmer is in a nasty 5 for 29 skid, and also a 2 for 17 funk, bringing his average down to .311.

Brandon Moore started, and went 4 innings, but was not as sharp as his last outing (4 ip, 2 h, 2/4 bb/k), he gave up 7 hits and 2 runs tonight, taking an ND. Oscar Melendez had a rare good outing, allowing 2 hits and 2 UER over 4 innings to pick up his 4th win.
