Jon Niese had a very good rehab outing today, despite giving up 8 hits (2 bunts and 3 bloops), he surrendered just 2 runs. Ruben Tejada had a good game out of the leadoff spot with 2 hits, and Josh Thole snapped a mini slump (2 for 13) with 2 hits and a walk. Jesus Feliciano DNP.

Eric Niesen had a very very rough outing today, his second back off the DL, giving up 5 runs (2 earned) on 3 hits and 6 walks in 3.2 innings. However, it was Scott Shaw, who piggybacked Niesen today, who took the loss, despite his best outing of the season, giving up a run on 5 hits in 4 innings.

The Mets offense had 8 hits and drew 6 walks, while striking out just 3 times, and going 3 for 9 with RISP, and leaving 7 on base. Luis Hernandez had the only multi hit game, while Reese Havens, Omir Santos (0 for 4, .000), and Jose Coronado (0 for 3, K, .235) took 0-fers.

Armando Rodriguez had a very uneven outing today, giving up 3 hits and 4 walks, but only 2 runs (on a homer). Erik Turgeon picked up the win with 2.1 scoreless innings, Michael Powers nabbed his 6th save with a perfect 9th.

I'm really not sure where to begin with this one. 4 Gnats took 0-fers, Pedro Zapata was one of them, but he left after 2 ABs with an injury. 5 Gnats had multi hit games, two had 4+ hits. Darin Gorski was terrible, giving up 4 runs on 6 hits and 3 walks in 3.1 innings, and Taylor Whitenton was equally dreadful, giving up 5 runs (4 earned) on 5 hits and 3 walks in 4 innings. John Church allowed the tying run in the 9th, then Brandon Sage did the same in the 13th, after Savannah had gone ahead 11-10. Michael Powers took the loss, giving up an uER in the 15th (Cesar Puello error). Overall, Gnat pitching gave up 19 hits and walked 8 in 14.2 innings on the mound\, while striking out 15.

The Gnat hitters fared as well as their counterparts, with 16 hits and 3 walks in 15 innings. They went 7 for 17 (.412) with RISP, left 8 on base, and struck out 14 times. Pedro Zapata, Nick Santomauro, Mike Moras (0 for 5, run, BB, 2 Ks, .000), and Jeff Flagg (0 for 7, 4 Ks, .158) took 0-fers. Thole was drafted by the Mets in the 13th round of the 2005 draft. After signing, Thole began a slow and steady trek through the system, making a position switch (from c to 1b and back) along the way, culminating in a callup in 2009 to the majors.

Thole followed up on a breakout 2008 by besting his totals in AVG, OBP, BB/K ratio, and OPS in 2009. Thole is still raw behind the plate, but offensively, he's definitely not a work in progress. He possesses a quick short stroke which he uses to hit for a high average, and lots of doubles. He doesn't have much HR power, but he is a gap to gap hitter. Thole has an average arm behind the plate, but he needs to work on letting the pitch come to him, too often he stabs at the ball.

THE FUTURE: Thole will definitely be in Buffalo to open 2010, and likely will spend all season there before opening 2011 as the starting catcher in New York.

Total 2009 Stats: .219/.253/.335/.589, 102 for 465, 51 runs, 20 2b, 2 3b, 10 HR, 53 RBI, 17/99 BB/K, .213 K rate, .1717 BB/K ratio

Pena was signed in 2006 as an IFA, and spent the next two seasons in Savannah, before getting a bump up to St. Lucie for the 2009 season.

Pena, outside of one hot two week stretch, had a very mediocre season in St. Lucie. Subtracting a 12 for 38 stretch (2 2b, 3b, 4 HR) from his season totals, Pena hit just .215/.246/.285/.531 in 354 ABs.

Pena is still young, and as such has many adjustments to make to his game, and he has not been well served at all by the Mets insane handling of him, but at the same time, he's shown little growth as a hitter. Pena is still raw behind the plate, but he has been making strides defensively. He has average arm strength and his mechanics need improving, but he has been conditioning himself better each season.

THE FUTURE: Pena should definitely open 2010 back in St. Lucie, but thereafter move up a level per season, meaning he'll be in Buffalo during the 2012 season.

FINAL 2009 Prospect Rankings (Tejesh)

The numbers in paraenthesis are the genesis of the 2009 season, from my preseason 09 list (2/7/09), to the list prior to this one (8/18/09). See who gained/lost in my eyes. This will be my final 2009 ranking.

The lists were as follows: 2/7 (top 30), 5/17 (top 20), 6/6 (top 30), 8/18 (top 60), 1/8 (this one, written on 11/8 - top 20)

1. OF Fernando Martinez (1): Made his MLB debut, showed off some of the tools which have been talked about many times in scouting reports, plus some which weren't expected (good speed, good defense in CF). Was injured in a freak slip&fall in Milwaukee, posted a really good line in AAA. Should open 2010 back in Buffalo

2. RHSP Jenrry Mejia (9,4,4,2): Blew through St. Lucie, had mixed results in AA, and a poor line in the AFL (but his K/9 and GOFO was off the charts good in Zona). Should open 2010 back in Binghamton

3. SS Wilmer Flores (2,2,2,3): After posting a composite .307/.347/.468/.815 line over 280 ABs last year, some were expecting big things out of the 17/18 year old this season, but they didn't materialize, as he hit just .264/.305/.332/.637 over 488 ABs. He probably should repeat Savannah at age 18/19, but chances are he opens 2010 in St. Lucie

4. 1B Ike Davis (15,11,14,5): Davis shut me up something fierce this season, I'd made it very well known I did not like him one bit, but a composite .298/.381/.524/.906 line with 20 HR and 31 2b between St. Lucie and Binghamton vault him into the top 5 of Met prospects. He should open 2010 in Buffalo, after hitting .341/.394/.565/.958 in Arizona.

5. RHSP Brad Holt (5,5,5,4): Holt apparently is in the doghouse for skipping Instructs, but outside of the off the field stuff, his on the field performance left much to be desired. While he did post a 3.12 in St. Lucie, he struggled mightily in AA, with a 6.21 era, and just 45 Ks in 58 innings, after posting 54 Ks in 43.1 St. Lucie innings. His secondary pitches need improvement if he is to remain a starter. He should open 2010 back in Binghamton.

6. RHSP Kyle Allen (20,14,30,10): Allen isn't well known, but I predict that by this time next year, he will be, so while ranking him 6th is a reach right now, I like being ahead of the curve. Allen features a fastball in the 92-95 range, with a good low to mid 80s changeup, and a mid 80s slider. He posted a 3.45 in Savannah, but if you subtract out his April (7.47), his ERA plummets to 2.87 over 109.2 innings. He should open 2010 in St. Lucie, but there exists a good possibility he ends the year in Binghamton, then visits Arizona.

7. SS Reese Havens (7,6,6,7) Havens had a fine season in 2009, with a 247/361/422/784 line, supressed by a very low BABIP, in the pitcher friendly FSL. Havens began making the transition to 2b in Arizona, where he hit 368/478/658/1136 in 38 ABs, and should either be outright playing 2b in 2010, or flip-flopping there with Ruben Tejada (who shouldn't be in Buffalo).

8. OF Kirk Nieuwenhuis (UNR,UNR,17,11) Nieuwenhuis, until early July, was a disappointment, but from July 8th to September 2nd, he totally exploded, hitting .340/.411/.602/1.013 in 206 ABs, and earning a promotion to Binghamton, where he should spend most (if not all) of 2010 as a 22 year old. Nieuwenhuis is a 5 tool prospect, though you don't hear much about him, you will. During his torrid streak, his BB/K was a solid 24/48, even though his overall BB/K was nothing special.

9. LHSP Jon Niese (3,8,8,8) Niese posted a sub 1 era in Buffalo over a 8 start span, got promoted, was pitching well, them succumbed to the black death which afflicted so many other Mets in 2009. Featuring a refined arsenal, including a cutter, Niese looked poised to grab a permanent rotation spot and run with it, but it was not to be. He comes into 2010 (if 100% healthy) as the favorite for the 5th SP job.

10. C Josh Thole (8,7,7,6) Thole is as Thole does. A+, AA, MLB, VWL, it doesn't matter. Thole hits. The only question about him is defense, and he threw out ~30% of basestealers in AA this year, though at last check, he was 1 for 19 in the VWL. Thole, solely based on his defense, should open 2010 in Buffalo. It will be a rare case where whatever he does offensively will (or should) mean considerably less then what he does defensively.

The Rafters rallied for 4 in the bottom of the 9th, erasing a 4-3 deficit and earning a come from behind 7-4 victory. Taylor Teagarden's (Rangers) walkoff 3 run shot completed the comeback, after Marcus Lemon (Rangers) tied it with a solo shot.

Reese Havens had another HUGE game with 3 more hits, including his 2nd AFL homer, a 2 run shot. Ike Davis also had a multi hit game, while Nick Evans took an 0-fer. Lemon had the other multi hit game for the Rafters. Josh Stinson pitched a scoreless inning in relief.

Prospect Focus: Josh Thole

The Mets selected Thole in the 13th round of the 2005 draft, and sent him to the GCL Mets, where he hit .269/.406/.337/.743 (28 for 104, 14 runs, 2 2b, 3b, HR, 12 RBI, 20/11 BB/K) in 35 games, an outstanding 1.8182 BB/K ratio, and a ridiculously low .105 K rate, both incredible numbers for an 18 year old in any setting.

Thole hit .370/.514/.407/.921 vs LHP in 2005 (10 for 27, 2b, 6/2 BB/K), with a 3.000 BB/K ratio and a .074 K rate, and .234/.366/.312/.678 (18 for 77, 2b, 3b, HR, 14/9 BB/K) vs RHP, with a 1.556 BB/K ratio, and a .117 K rate.

In 2006, Thole played in 35 games for Kingsport, getting just 96 ABs, and hitting .240/.306/.313/.619 (23 for 96, 4 2b, HR, 7/24 BB/K), a .2917 BB/K ratio and a .250 K rate, both drastically elevated from the year prior. He hit .167/.286/.208/.494 vs LHP (4 for 24, 2b, 2/6 BB/K) and .264/.313/.347/.660 (19 for 72, 3 2b, HR, 5/18 BB/K) vs RHP. Both sample sizes are too small to draw any meaningful conclusions from.

2007 saw Thole in full season Savannah, where he performed markedly better then Kingsport, hitting .267/.372/.311/.683 (104 for 389, 46 runs, 17 2b, 36 RBI, 61/57 BB/K), once again with excellent ratios, a 1.0701 BB/K ratio, and a .147 K rate.

Thole batted .301/.414/.329/.743 against LHP (22 for 73, 2 2b, 11/9 BB/K), a 1.22 BB/K ratio, and a .123 K rate. Against RHP, he batted .261/.368/.312/.680 (82 for 314, 16 2b, 52/47 BB/K), a 1.107 BB/K ratio and a .150 K rate.

Thole, as many Met prospects have done, has improved drastically across the board after making the jump from the Sally League to the pitcher friendly FSL. Thole finished the 2008 season hitting .300/.382/.427/.808 (104 for 347, 49 runs, 25 2b, 2 3b, 5 HR, 56 RBI, 45/38 BB/K), a great 1.184 BB/K ratio and an equally fantastic .110 K rate (which for much of the season was below .100).

Thole got off to a very rough start, hitting .228/.323/.386/.709 in April, and since that point, he hit .314/.393/.434/.828 (91 for 290, 42 runs, 21 2b, 3b, 4 HR, 46 RBI, 38/30 BB/K)

As has been the case throughout the majority of Thole's minor league career, he hit better against LHP then RHP, but this year, that gap narrowed considerably. He hit .333/.386/.432/.818 (27 for 81, 14 runs, 6 2b, 3b, 8 RBI, 6/8 BB/K) vs LHP, with a 0.750 BB/K ratio, and a K rate of .098, while against RHP, he hit .289/.381/.426/.807 (76 for 263, 35 runs, 19 2b, 3b, 5 HR, 48 RBI, 39/30 BB/K), with a 1.300 BB/K ratio, and a .114 K rate.

Thole played the majority of his first 3 seasons as a 1b (142 of 187 games), but in 2008, he played much more catcher, giving him infinitely more value as a player and a prospect.

THE FUTURE: Thole will undoubtedly be in Binghamton to open the 2009 season (after setting career highs in every offensive category except OBP), as the everyday catcher, and one of the few catching prospects in the upper levels of the farm system. While SAL to FSL is one test, the much bigger test for a prospect is the jump from the FSL to EL, the jump Thole will be making in 2009. Thole is solidly on pace for a prospect, playing the entire season as a 21 year old this year affords him a cushion if he were to falter on his trek through the system.

UPDATE 2009: Thole enjoyed yet another terrific offensive season, this time in AA Binghamton, setting career highs in 2b (29), SBs (8), K rate (.089), AVG (.328), and OPS (.817). Overall this season in Binghamton, he hit .328/.395/.422/.817 (126 for 384, 48 runs, 29 2b, 2 3b, HR, 46 RBI, 42/34 BB/K, 8/12 SBs), with a great 1.24 BB/K ratio, and a ridiculously low .089 K rate.

Thole's L/R platoon splits reversed themselves this season somewhat, he hit for an identical average/OBP against both lefties and righties, but flashed off more 'pop' against righties, driving his OPS higher. Against lefties, he hit .328/.391/.388/.779 (38 for 116, 13 runs, 7 2b, 10 RBI, 10/14 BB/K, 1/4 SBs), with a .7143 BB/K ratio and a .121 K rate. Against righties, Thole hit .328/.396/.437/.833 (88 for 268, 35 runs, 22 2b, 2 3b, HR, 36 RBI, 32/20 BB/K, 7/8 SBs), with a ridiculous 1.6000 BB/K ratio, and an equally ridiculous .075 K rate.

THE FUTURE: Thole's gotten a September callup, and is performing decently, hitting .324, albeit with no pop (29 IsoP) as of this writing. I would hope the Mets keep Thole on the conservative path, and allow him to start 2010 in Buffalo (moreso for his defense then his offense).

Reese Havens had another huge game, falling a homer short of the cycle, powering a 19 hit attack as the Rafters outscored the Sags, 11 to 9. Jenrry Mejia got the start for Surprise and was woefully ineffective, allowing 5 runs on 6 hits and 2 walks in 3 innings. On the plus side, he struck out 3 and got 5 of his 9 outs via groundball.

Aside from Havens, 4 other players had multi hit games, all were 3 hit games. Marcus Lemon (Rangers), Tyler Henley (Cardinals), Taylor Teagarden (Rangers) and Colin Curtis (Yankees).

Antonini picked up his 6th win, giving up 2 runs on 8 hits in 5 innings. Connor Robertson allowed 2 hits in his 1.2 innings, but picked up his 11th EL save.

He was the only player to take an 0-fer. The Gnats had 17 hits and 7 walks, while going 8 for 17 (.471) with RISP, and leaving 10 on base.

Chris Schwinden was the beneficiary of the run support, he went the first 6 innings, allowing 7 hits and a run for his 9th win.

The Mets made a belated comeback attempt, scoring 3 in the 9th, but Carlos Guzman grounded out with the tying run on first, ending the game. Manuel Olivares picked up the win with 3 good innings of relief, allowing a run on 3 hits, Jacob Goldberg picked up the save, pitching the final 3 innings, allowing a run on 4 hits. Carson, after pushing his ERA all the way down to 2, has now allowed 11 earned runs in his last 2 outings, totalling 4.2 innings, a miserable 21.21 era, and his season's ERA now stands at 2.89.

The Gnats were, as I mentioned, swinging hot bats tonight, with 14 hits and 5 walks. They went a stellar 6 for 11 (.556) with RISP, leaving just 5 on base. By the way, what exactly does Edgar Ramirez have left to prove in the FSL? He went up to the Eastern League and posted a 6.66 era in 25.2 innings, but for crying out loud, the man has a .27 era, and it was around .40 when he left St. Lucie the first time. For crying out loud, send him north and leave him there. Not like he's getting any younger (he's 25 1/2)

The Gnats had one of their best offensive games of the season, hammering out 15 hits and drawing 6 walks, while going 7 for 12 (.583) with RISP and leaving 7 on base. Every Gnat except Jean Luc Blaquiere (0 for 2, run, 3 BBs, .213) had a hit, and 4 Gnats (Raul Reyes, Josh Satin, Sean Ratliff, Joey August) had homers. Sam Honeck's RBI groundout, and Tyler Vaughn's RBI single tied the game at 2, where this game stayed until the bottom of the 14th, when Robbie Shields (who'd singled to lead off) scored on a wild pitch, ending the game. The Conies had just 9 hits and 5 walks in 14 innings, while going a putrid 1 for 12 (.083) with RISP, leaving 11 on base. John Servidio (0 for 5, run, 2 BBs, 2 Ks, .195), Sam Honeck (0 for 4, RBI, K, .313), Luis Rivera (0 for 2, K, .301) and Nick Santomauro (0 for 6, 3 Ks, .238) took 0-fers, while Tyler Vaughn, Nick Giarraputo and Robbie Shields each had 2 hit games.

Tonight's fun "The KMets pitching staff is pathetic" fact: They've given up 10 or more runs in 9 of their 33 games, and 9 or more runs in 12 games. Tonight it was Jhonathan Torres (6 in 5 innings) and Guillaume LeDuc (4 in 2 innings) who gave it up, with Torres taking his 3rd Appy League loss. After posting a 0.82 era in the GCL, Torres has a 5.79 era through 3 Appy League starts (though to be fair it was 3.00 before tonight's meltdown).
