7/6 Minor League Report. Duda, Nieuwenhuis, Ratliff, Wilmer!

I tried out doing screen shots of the box score to see how it looks, copy pasting them will not work anymore. Some people liked being able to come here and view all the box scores in one place, so it is convenient but I also understand it doesn't provide anything outside of it, so I'll write a few paragraphs.
Let me know which you prefer. Or I can just do what Tej does, just let me know in the chat box or comments.

Buffalo lost a close game @ Syracuse 5-4. Lucas Duda continues to rake, collecting 3 more hits, 1 being a double (6) and adding 2 RBI. He is now hitting .319 on the season in Buffalo. Lujan came in with a 1 run lead in the 6th and promptly blew it, giving up 3 hits, and 2 earned runs in 1 inning of work. He also struck out 2. Manuel Alvarez, who has been pitching lights out this season, made his AAA debut and threw 2 shutout innings, giving up 1 hit, walking 1, and striking out 1.

Binghamton's offense continues to be a force, winning @ Altoona 11-6. Leading the 17 hit attack for Binghamton was a RED HOT Kirk Nieuwenhuis, going a perfect 4 for 4, with 1 double (24), 3 RBI, and 3 runs scored. His batting average on the season is up to .296, and he looks to be on one of those patented hot streaks we saw from him last season. Right behind him were Sean Ratliff and Nick Evans. Ratliff went 3 for 6, hitting 1 HR (7) and 4 RBI, raising his average to .315 in Binghamton on the season. Evans went 1 for 3, with the 1 hit being a solo HR (14). 2nd baseman Josh Satin added 3 hits of his own, and is now hitting .317 since being promoted. Mark Cohoon making his 3rd start in AA pitched 4 innings of 3 hit ball, giving up 2 ER, walking 2 and striking out 2. His era through 3 starts is 4.91.

St. Lucie took an early lead and held on to win at home 8-5 over Charlotte. The top story of the night in St. Lucie could be the performances of 2 major league players on rehab in Beltran and Perez, but the Wilmer Flores show headlines once again. Flores continues to rake High A pitching (maybe he actually was getting bored in Savannah?), going 4 for 5 with a double (1), scoring 2 runs and adding 2 more RBI. He is now hitting .431 in St. Lucie. Carlos Beltran played all 9 innings in the outfield and went 2 for 4, hitting a double of his own and walking once. Beltran should be close to being ready, and he should be a nice boost to the big league team for the 2nd half if he can stay healthy. Stefan Welch hit his 22nd double of the year, walked once but also struck out 3 times.
Oliver Perez made his 2nd rehab outing in St. Lucie, and was very effective. He pitched 5.2 innings, striking out 7, walking 3, and giving up 2 ER on just 2 hits. Much better outing than the first one, but I'm not exactly holding my breath that he will do much to help the big league team the rest of the way, anything positive he gives us is gravy at this point. Rhiner Cruz got his 3rd save.

Savannah gave up 5 runs in the 8th, blowing a 4 run lead and lost to Rome 7-6 at home. Caesar Puello went 1 for 4, and stole his 25th base of the season. Jefry Marte went 2 for 4 with a walk and an RBI, raising his average to .232 on the season. Nick Santomauro continues to struggle in Savannah, going 0 for 5 and striking out twice, lowering his average to a paltry .164 leading me to believe something may be wrong with him, physically or mentally. Colin McHugh had a very solid outing, going 6 innings he gave up 5 hits, 2 ER, walked 1 and struck out 9. His ERA is now 3.45 on the season.

Brooklyn's late rally came up short as they fell to Jamestown 7-5. Darrell Cecilliani hit his 7th double of the season, and is hitting .373. Might be time to swap him with Santomauro at some point. Cory Vaughn went 1 for 4, striking out twice and stealing his 4th base on the season.

The Mets had a 4 run 7th to ice the game, and Bret Mitchell was good again, for his 2nd win of the season. Justin Schafer, Aderlin Rodriguez, Albert Cordero and Nelfi Zapata had multi hit games, while ZeErika McQueen, Javier Rodriguez and Ray Van Gurp took 0-fers.

Stefan Welch scored twice today, including the game winnin in the 11th, as the Mets rallied from a 2-0 first inning deficit to win 3-2 in 11 innings. Welch, Joey August and Jean Luc Blaquiere had multi hit games, while Wilfredo Tovar and John Semel (0 for 5, 2 Ks, .167) took 0-fers). The Mets overall had 11 hits and drew one walk against 10 strikeouts, while going 2 for 9 (.222) with RISP and leaving 9 on base.

Scott Moviel failed to build upon his "decent" outing last time out, again struggling with command as he walked 5 and hit a batter in 5 innings. Jimmy Johnson picked up the win with 2 scoreless innings. Overall, Met pitching walked 9 and struck out 9.

Yohan Almonte was pitching great, until he got to the 7th inning, when 2 errors and some inconsistency led to 4 runs (3 earned) off him in the inning. Overall, Almonte gave up 5 runs (4 earned) on 5 hits and 2 walks in 6.2 innings for his first loss of the season. The Conies offense had just 3 hits and 2 walks, and struck out 6 times, while going 1 for 3 with RISP and leaving 3 on base. Cody Holliday (0 for 3, run, BB, K, .100), Darrell Ceciliani, Jeff Flagg (0 for 4, K, .167), JB Brown (0 for 4, K, .150), Jet Butler (0 for 3, .250), RJ Harris and Juan Centeno took 0-fers. One has to wonder with his pwecious Cyclones scuffling for offense, how long Jeffy boy will wait before wanting Wilmer, Marte, Welch and David Wright in Brooklyn.

Fernando DNP after being hit by a pitch in yesterday's game, though he did come into the game in a double switch (no, not the one that controls two lights!) in the 9th.

A day after their bullpen imploded, the Mets provided the pen with a plethora of insurance, racking up 15 hits and 5 walks, en route to a 13-5 pounding of the Fisher Cats. 8 of the Mets 15 hits were doubles, with Mike Nickeas having 3. Kirk Nieuwenhuis, Nick Evans, Lucas Duda and Marshall Hubbard also had multi hit games, while Carlos Guzman took the only 0-fer. Eddie Kunz was highly ineffective, but he got a win out of it. Kunz went 5 innings plus, giving up 4 runs on 5 hits and 3 walks.

Finally, a vintage Kyle Allen outing. Allen had, by far, his easiest and best start of 2010, giving up 2 runs on 3 hits and 3 walks in 6.1 innings for his 3rd win of the season. Allen left after surrendering a 2 run homer, but that didn't tarnish what was a magnificant effort, including 5.2 no hit innings.

The Mets offense did just enough tonight with 7 hits and 4 walks, while going just 1 for 5 with RISP, leaving 6 on base and striking out 12 times. Eric Campbell and Josh Satin had multi hit games, while Emmanuel Garcia (0 for 2, run, 2 BBs, K, .259), Reese Havens, Sean Ratliff (0 for 4, 2 Ks, .272), Raul Reyes (0 for 4, 3 Ks, .183) and Tony Maccani (0 for 4, K, .233) all took 0-fers.

A South Atlantic League: Savannah 11/14/5, Lakewood 7/8/1

Wilmer. Flores. He was cold this month (5 for 24), and had been in a 6 for 31 skid dating back to April 29th, but broke out of that in a big way with 3 hits, all for XBH, falling a single short of the cycle. He wasn't the only one to have a huge game for Savannah, as Pedro Zapata had 4 hits, and Alonzo Harris had a pair of doubles. In the midst of hitting, Kai Gronauer took an 0-fer. The Gnats also committed 5 errors, which served to turn a 9-3 lead into a 9-7 lead in the 6th inning.

Jim Fuller had a shaky outing, going 5 innings while allowing 4 hits and 3 runs (all unearned due to various errors), but he walked 4, so it's not like he wasn't partially to blame. Lance Hoge had another horrible outing, giving up 3 hits and 4 runs (2 earned) in an inning. Erik Turgeon and Michael Powers combined to end the insanity and throw up 3 scoreless to end things.

AAA International League: Buffalo 11/13/0, Scranton 7/12/0

I guess the Bisons offense isn't that bad, huh? They hammered out 13 hits and drew 5 walks en route to a wild 11-7 victory over the Yankees this afternoon. Prospects Josh Thole and Fernando Martinez were a combined 3 for 7 with 4 runs and 3 RBI. Fernando crushed his first homer of the season. Ruben Tejada chipped in with a pair of doubles for the Bisons, who were 6 for 14 (.429) with RISP, and left 6 on base, while striking out 3 times.

Pat Misch started and was meh (yes, I just used the word 'meh'), giving up 6 hits and 3 runs in 5.2 innings. Elmer Dessens blew the save for him, however, when he allowed one of Mike O'Connor's IHR to score. He picked up the win after Buffalo put up a 4 run bottom of the 8th.

It has been entirely too long since Kirk Nieuwenhuis made the headline, huh? Well...how's a 5 for 6, 3 XBH night sound? He led the charge from atop the Mets lineup with those 5 hits. Lucas Duda (3), and Brahiam Maldonado (2, AA debut) also had multi hit games for the Mets, while Zach Lutz and Mike Nickeas (0 for 2, run, 3 BBs, K, .167) took 0-fers. The Mets overwhelmed the Sea Dogs pitching tonight, hammering out 14 hits, drawing 8 walks, and going a blistering 6 for 13 (.462) with RISP. On the flip side, they left 6 on base and struck 10 times.

Scott Shaw was the beneficiary of the offensive outpouring, he went the first 5, giving up 3 runs on 4 hits and 4 walks for the win. Jose De La Torre and Derrick Ellison finished off the game with 2 scoreless each.

Hit parades around the minors tonight! St. Lucie poured across 11 of them tonight, along with 3 walks, while going 3 for 7 (.429) with RISP, leaving 4 on base, and striking out 10 times. Jordany Valdespin, Emmanuel Garcia and Josh Satin each had multi hit games, while Andy Green (0 for 2, BB, 2 Ks, .333) took the only 0-fer.

Jeurys Familia started and cruised through 4, before getting smacked around for 5 hits, a walk and 5 runs in the 5th inning, he ultimately took a ND. Manuel Alvarez pitched a scoreless 8th and 9th to pick up his first win of the season.

A South Atlantic League: Savannah 11/18/0, Augusta 3/11/1

Between all 4 affiliates tonight, the system scorched the opposition for 56 hits and 44 runs. Savannah completed the 5 game sweep by hammering out 18 and 11, along with 7 walks. The Gnats went 10 for 24 (.417) with RISP, left 14 on base, and struck out 9 times. Six of the nine hitters in the Gnats lineup had multi hit games, with Wilmer Flores highlighting the group. Rylan Sandoval (0 for 2, run, 3 BBs, .115) took the only 0-fer. MarK Cohoon was the benefit of the Gnats outburst, going 6 innings, allowing 2 runs on 8 hits.

Ike Davis was the Mets first pick in the 2008 draft, 18th overall, out of Arizona State, and he was sent to Brooklyn after signing, where he endured a miserable season, hitting a pathetic .256/.326/.326/.652 in 215 ABs, with just 15 2b and 0 HR.

However, Davis exploded in 2009, mashing the cover off the ball no matter where he was, St. Lucie, Binghamton, the Baseball World Classic, or Arizona. He ended up with one of the best overall seasons a Mets prospect has had in a long time, with 40 2b and 27 HR.

Ike has tremendous power (um, as we saw on his absurd BOMB to right field in St. Lucie), and especially to the pull side. He has issues hitting lefties (.200/.234/.283/.518 in the FSL, but he did turn that around to hit .268/.342/.465/.807 in the EL). Davis is a very good first basemen, but as we've seen this spring, he does have some kinks to work out. His arm is very good, and it's likely he could man left field if he needed to (he doesn't have the range for RF, especially @ Citifield).

THE FUTURE: Davis, despite his big spring so far, should open 2010 in the minors, likely in Buffalo, though a return to Binghamton wouldn't be a total shock. What also wouldn't be be a total shock is Ike taking 1b from Daniel Murphy by midseason. Still, we'll say he'll be the 2011 opening day 1b.

Nick Evans was drafted in the 5th round of the 2004 draft out of St. Mary's High in Arizona. After toiling through the system for 5 years, Evans made his MLB debut in 2008, but opened 2009 in BUffalo.

EVans endured a tumultuous 2009, after getting off to a sub .100 start in Buffalo, he was demoted to extended spring, then Binghamton, where he recovered his stroke (.817 OPS). Still, for whatever reason, as the major league season progressed to the point of absurdity, Evans did not receive any meaningful playing time, in favor of stiffs like Cory Sullivan and Fernando Tatis. Evans, despite his terrible season, did hit 16 HR and 27 2b in 442 ABs, showing very good power.

THE FUTURE: He should open 2010 in Buffalo playing LF/RF/1b, and hopefully he gets another real crack at the majors. Keep in mind he hit .329/.390/.529/.919 against lefties in 2009 in the majors.

3. A+/AA 3b Zach Lutz R/R 6/3/86 (A+ St. Lucie .284/.381/.441/.822, 101 for 356, 46 runs, 19 2b, 2 3b, 11 HR, 62 RBI, 50/72 BB/K, AA Binghamton .207/.324/.241/.565, 6 for 29, 2b, 2 RBI, 5/7 BB/K)

Lutz was drafted in the 5th round of the 2007 draft out of Alvernia University, and injuries have severely hampered him throughout his minor league career, but when he's been healthy, he's hit. For the majority of the 2009 season, he was healthy, and showed what he could do.

Lutz was healthy for the first time in his career in 2009, and after a slow start in St. Lucie (.230/.370/.391/.761 thru the end of May), Lutz took off thereafter, ripping the FSL to the tune of .301/.384/.457/.842 and earning a cup of coffee with Binghamton.

Lutz can hit, he is a very disciplined hitter (50/72 BB/K in St. Lucie, 5/7 in Binghamton), who sprays the ball gap to gap and has good HR power. Due to concurrent ankle injuries in 2007 and 2008, Lutz' speed, such that it was, is not an asset at all. As with his hitting, he's an intelligent runner who won't run himself into many outs. Lutz is a decent defender at 3b, with good range to his left (backhand) side. Overall, Lutz should be a very good player, but it likely will not be with the Mets (Wright/Davis).

THE FUTURE: Lutz ended 2009 in Binghamton and that's where he wants to go (not way down in Kokomo) in 2010 (I apologize for the horrible joke). Figuring 2011 will be spent in Buffalo, we'll say he makes his MLB debut sometime in 2011. Lutz will have to be put onto the 40 man roster at the end of this season, or be eligible for the Rule V draft (it's 2006 HS and 2007 college this year).

Lucas was drafted in the 4th round of the 2009 draft, out of Wolfson High in Florida. After struggling through his first two seasons with the Mets, he turned it on big time in 2009.

Lucas had a terrific 2009 season, his 3rd in the organization. He was injured to start, and then received the bulk of his playing time this season in Kingsport, where he oblierated the Appy League and showed tremendous plate discipline (20/20 BB/K) and outstanding power (.622 SLG, 17 XBH in 98 ABs).

Lucas has natural ability to hit the ball to all fields, and shows good power doing so. As mentioned, he's got very good plate discipline, which allows him to wait for his pitch and then hit it hard somewhere. Defensively, Lucas is an average 3rd baseman, with a steady arm.

THE FUTURE: Coming off a terrific season, Lucas will likely open 2010 in Savannah manning 3rd base (hopefully with Jefry Marte at 1st!), and then a level per season should have him in position to make his debut sometime in 2013, or 2014 at the latest.

5. AA 1B Lucas Duda L/R 2/3/86 (AA Binghamton .281/.380/.428/.808, 111 for 395, 49 runs, 29 2b, 3b, 9 HR, 53 RBI, 61/91 BB/K, AFL Surprise .400/.500/.600/1.100, 2 for 5, run, 2b, 2 RBI, BB)

Duda was drafted in the 7th round of the 2007 draft out of USC. He spent the remainder of the 2007 season in Brooklyn, before moving to the FSL in 2008, where he had a very down year.

Duda rebounded off a down 2008 season to post career highs in 2b and HR, but he still hasn't shown off the power one would expect from someone as big as he is (6'4/225). Duda vastly improved his BB/K ratio from 2008 (.5516 to .6703). Duda cannot hit lefty pitching to save his life (.192/.283/.225/.508 in 120 ABs)

As seen throughout his minor league career, especially in 2007 and 2009, Duda's got a very good notion of the strike zone. Duda is a line drive gap to gap hitter, but he did start hitting for more power late in the season in Binghamton. Duda's an average defensive 1b, and adequate in LF, but he won't win many (if any) games with his defense.

THE FUTURE: Duda likely could handle being the lefty part of a MLB platoon right now, but he will instead attempt to gain a clue against LHP in AAA in 2010. He's not on the 40 man roster, so he likely won't be called up this season, and he doesn't have to be put on the 40 man roster until the end of this season.

6. A 3b Jefry Marte R/R 6/21/91 (A Savannah .233/.279/.338/.617, 113 for 485, 58 runs, 21 2b, 6 3b, 6 HR, 41 RBI, 25/117 BB/K, 5/10 SBs)

The Mets signed Jefry Marte in the IFA signing period of 2007, along with OF Cesar Puello and SS Wilmer Flores. He was sent to the GCL in 2008 and had a banner rookie season, and then endured an awful 2009.

Marte had a dismal season in 2009, both offensively and defensively. Besides hitting for just a .617 OPS, Marte made 49 errors in 123 games, and keep in mind he DHed a few games, too. However, also keep in mind he played the season at age 17/18. And, for his age relative to level, he had an OK offensive season, and there were points where he was downright impressive. Combining his April, June and July numbers, roughly half his season, he hit .271/.315/.385/.700 (81 for 299, 42 runs, 15 2b, 5 3b, 3 HR, 30 RBI, 17/71 BB/K). However, the downside to that, of course, is that in the other 186 ABs, Marte hit .172/.222/.263/.486.

Marte, as we saw last year (.532 SLG, 21 XBH in 154 ABs), Marte's got impressive raw power, which should be enhanced as he physically matures. However, the lack of any approach curtailed his power numbers significantly (.2136 BB/K). He mostly pulls the ball, which leaves him vunerable to breaking balls away. Defensively, he's a mess, with not much lateral movement, and a strong, but unpredictable, arm at third.

THE FUTURE: Marte likely will open 2010 back in Savannah, this time either outright as the teams 1b, or in a 1b/3b platoon with Richard Lucas. Assuming some growth as a hitter, Marte should open 2011 in St. Lucie, and ascend a level per year, making his MLB debut sometime in 2013. A more conservative approach would give him time to repeat a level along the way (again), pushing his debut back to 2014.

Aderlin Rodriguez made his pro debut in 2009, playing in the GCL. He had an OK offensive season, and showed off some good plate discipline (.6000 BB/K at age 17), but no power and was a total mess in the field.

Aderlin is a big kid (6'3/210), and should show off more power as he gains strength and grows into his frame. Aderlin has a strong arm and should develop into a good defensive 3b, but he's extremely raw right now.

THE FUTURE: Aderlin will likely open 2010 in Kingsport (since he's blocked in Savannah), although there is a possibility he could open in Brooklyn, which would shorten his development schedule by one season (the Mets like jumping prospects from Kingsport to Savannah, and from Brooklyn to St. Lucie). If he opens 2010 in Kingsport, his MLB debut will likely occur in the 2014 season, if he opens in Brooklyn, it would be in 2013 (assuming no setbacks with performance)

10. AA 3b Shawn Bowman R/R 12/9/84 (AA Binghamton: .294/.346/.458/.804, 102 for 347, 42 runs, 24 2b, 3 3b, 9 HR, 44 RBI, 25/101 BB/K, .291 K rate, .2475 BB/K ratio, BWC: .291/.381/.491, 16 for 55, 9 runs, 2 2b, 3 HR, 15 RBI, 8/18 BB/K)

Bowman was drafted in the 12th round of the 2002 draft, and by 2005, was one of the Mets top prospects, and was rumored to be "moving David Wright to first base". That never happened, as Bowman instead succumbed to a series of debilitating back injuries over the next 3 years. He made a comeback over the last 2 seasons, and has landed back onto the radar, but time is against him, unfortunately, as is Ike Davis at 1b. However, Bowman is still the best defensive 3b in the organization, and he was placed on the 40 man roster to protect him from the Rule V draft. Bowman has...or had, terrific power, but his injuries have somewhat curtailed that.

THE FUTURE: Bowman should open 2010 in Buffalo, and is a phone call away from the majors. His story is one of endurance, and MPH feverently hopes he makes the majors at some point this season, we're all rooting for him.

Brandon Sage, pushed into his longest outing of the season, and already pitching awfully (4 hits, 4 walks, 1 run in 3 innings), gave up an UER in his 4th inning of work, though he wasn't completely absolved, he allowed 3 hits in the inning, to take his 1st NYPL loss. Sage faced 22 batters, the equivalent of pitching 7.1 perfect innings, his previous high in innings had also been 4, on July 9th, when he allowed a hit and struck out 1. Obviously this outing was vastly different. Collin McHugh started and was excellent tonight, giving up just 3 hits in 7 innings, and striking out a dozen along the way, but he got an ND.

Stephen Clyne came in with the bases loaded and 2 down, and proceeded to allow all 3 runs to score, but escaped the inning with a tie. Brahiam Maldonado's 4 hit in the bottom of the 9th completed the narrow avoidance of disaster. Moviel started, and pitched a meh game, giving up 5 hits and 3 runs (2 earned) with 2 walks and 3 HBP. Michael Antonini had an absolutely dreadful outing today, surrendering 7 runs on 8 hits and 3 walks in just 4.2 innings. Stephen Clyne did a good job in long relief, going 3 innings, allowing just a run on 3 hits, though he did walk 2. Edgar Alfonzo picked up the win with 2.1 innings of scoreless relief. If you take out Alfonzo's miserable relief outing on May 9th (4 runs without retiring a batter), his ERA drops from 4.19 to 2.33.

Kyle Allen, who was scheduled to piggyback, came on after 4 innings, and had a very uneven outing, giving up 4 runs on 6 hits, but generating 12 groundouts of the 15 he got (the other 3 were Ks). He picked up the win after the Gnats scored one in the top of the 10th.

The Gnats pounded out 14 hits and drew 6 walks, and were 4 for 11 with RISP, leaving 12 men on base. Jefry Marte, Sean Ratliff, Jean Luc Blaquiere (0 for 3, BB, .194) and Luis Alen (0 for 4, RBI, .182) were the Gnats who failed to record multi hit games.

Nelson Figueroa pitched well, giving up just 2 runs in 7 innings, but he again took a tough luck loss.

Stay hot Shawn Bowman. He's on an 8 game hitting streak, batting .485 over that stretch (16 for 33, 7 runs, 2 2b, 3b, 3 HR, 7 RBI, 1/5 BB/K), and has 5 straight multi hit games (13 for 21) over the 5 games. Lucas Duda also had a multi hit game, while Emmanuel Garcia (0 for 4, RBI, K, .261), and Carl Loadenthal (0 for 2, BB, .258) took 0-fers. The Mets had 10 hits and drew 4 walks, but were just 2 for 11 with RISP and left 9 on base.

Ryan Coultas started for the Mets, and was good over his 6 innings, allowing 2 runs on 7 hits. Stephen Clyne (in his AA debut) allowed a run on 2 hits in 2 innings to blow a 3-2 lead, and then Roy Merritt allowed a leadoff homer in the bottom of the 9th to take the loss. Binghamton 4, Portland 1

Ryan Coultas had another very very good start for the BMets, scattering 4 hits and a run over 7 innings, as the Mets won 4-1. Coultas, who started his career as a shortstop, has 27.2 innings in 5 starts, and is holding the EL to a .240 BAA. Reportedly, he can get his fastball up into the low to mid 90s (93, 94) as a starter, so he could be a very intriguing candidate for a September callup this year.

The Mets had 8 hits and drew 5 walks, but as has been the case virtually all season, they struggled mightily with RISP, going just 2 for 13 and leaving 10 men on base. Lucas Duda had the only multi hit game, his odd season continues. He's now hitting .309/.455/.412 (roughly), with a 17/17 BB/K ratio. Odd, because he was drafted as a power hitter (especially with a 6'4/225 frame), and he's got just 4 XBH in 68 ABs. However, it is extremely encouraging to see the high average and high OBP, and power should come naturally. Jon Malo (0 for 4, BB, .286) took the only 0-fer for the Mets.

April 2009 Hotsheet

1. C Josh Thole L/R 10/28/86 AA Binghamton: .383/.457/.500/.957 (23 for 60, 9 runs, 7 2b, 4 RBI, 8/8 BB/K)

Yep, Thole keeps doing what Thole does, hit for a high average/high OBP, not all that much power (keep in mind it's usually cold in Binghamton in April), and murder LHP (.526/.609/.579/1.188). This year, however, he's hitting very well against RHP (.317/.383/.463/.846), hopefully that continues so he doesn't end up needing a platoon mate. Thole is 10 for his last 22, so he's especially hot as of late.

2. 1B Lucas Duda L/R 2/3/86 AA Binghamton: .292/.470/.396/.866, 14 for 48, 7 runs, 2 2b, HR, 9 RBI, 15/12 BB/K

Duda had a fantastic first month in AA, much the same as he did last year, the key is sustaining it now. Remember, he fell into a 3 month chasm off his great April last year, we don't need any repeats of that this year. Despite his great beginning to 2009, Duda still struggles mightily against LHP, he didn't record a hit against lefties in April, going 0 for 12.

3. SP Angel Calero L/L 9/25/86 A+ St. Lucie: 1-1, 1.23 era, 4 GS, 22 IP, 12 H, 3 ER, HR, 8/20 BB/K, 0.71 GO/FO, .174 BAA, 0.91 WHIP

Calero has been excellent to start off 2009, much as he was to start off 2008. The Mets limit pitch counts early, so he's alternated 5 and 6 inning starts this season, but he has pitched brilliantly. A VERY good sign going forward is that he is holding RHB to a .154 BAA (over 17.1 innings so far, 52 outs).

4. SP/RP Brant Rustich R/R 1/23/85 A+ St. Lucie: 1-0, 1.38 era, 4 G, 13 IP, 8 H, 2 ER, 3/18 BB/K, 1.20 GO/FO, .160 BAA, 0.85 WHIP

Rustich hasn't made a start yet this season, but he might be ready to enter the rotation the next time through (considering his last relief outing was 5 innings in a 14 inning game). Rustich, who is healed enough from his injuries last season to be sitting in the 93-96 range, has a very good 12.46 K/9 ratio, and has walked just 3. I still say if the Mets used Rustich as a reliever exclusively, he would be ready by July 1st to be a part of the Mets bullpen, but as I've also said, six of one, half dozen of the other...Rustich is a very good SP prospect, too.

5. SP/RP Nick Carr R/R 4/19/87 A+ St. Lucie: 1-0, 1.69 era, 5 G, 16 IP, 11 H, 6/3 R/ER, 10/17 BB/K, 1.45 GO/FO, .204 BAA, 1.31 WHIP

Carr is coming off a disaster of a 2008 season (2-10, 5.70 era) in St. Lucie, but he's off to a much better start in 2009, though he has yet to start a game. In 5 relief outings (3 of them 4 innings in length), he's struck out 17, though his walk rate (.625/ip, 5.63 per 9) is still much too high. Look for Carr, like Rustich, to join the rotation at some point in May, maybe when Calero and Holt move on to Binghamton (though Holt's sporting a nifty 6+ era).

6. 1B Ike Davis L/L 3/22/87 A+ St. Lucie: .304/.375/.468/.843, 24 for 79, 8 runs, 8 2b, 3b, HR, 6 RBI, 9/20 BB/K

Davis, who started off April very slowly, came on like an out of control freight train in the second half of the month, crushing everything in sight, and becoming a doubles machine. It's very early, but so far, it seems Davis is quieting the doubters (of which I remain one). Assuming a quick May and early June, it wouldn't be shocking to see Davis be pushed to Binghamton (although Lucas Duda does stand in his way).

7. SP Jeurys Familia R/R 10/10/89 A Savannah: 2-1, 1.37 era, 4/3 G/GS, 19.2 IP, 11 H, 5/3 R/ER, 9/14 BB/K, 2.07 GO/FO, .164 BAA, 1.02 WHIP

Familia's come out and performed very well in his age 19 season, getting his first taste of full season ball, setting a good foundation for the remainder of his season.

8. 2B/SS Jordany Valdespin L/R 12/23/87 A Savannah: .385/.406/.615/1.021, 25 for 65, 15 runs, 2 2b, 2 3b, 3 HR, 15 RBI, 3/10 BB/K, 2/3 SBs

Valdespin came pretty much out of nowhere to have the best statistical month of any Met minor leaguer, at least until he was suspended for conduct determental to the team on 4/26. Up to that point, he led the Gnats in RBI, XBH, average, and SLG. Early reports from a couple of eyewitnesses (both posters on NYFS) suggest Valdespin has good hands and is a good defender at 2b. Obviously he can hit (though it's a very very small sample size). We'll see what happens when he comes back off suspension, if he's back at Savannah.

Who's Not

1. SP Jon Niese L/L 10/27/86 AAA Buffalo: 0-2, 8.44 era, 4 GS, 16 IP, 26 H, 19/15 R/ER, HR, 7/17 BB/K, 1.31 GO/AO, .361 BAA, 2.06 WHIP

Niese, after struggling in spring training, has taken it to a whole different level of struggle in Buffalo. Half of his 4 starts, he's failed to complete 4 innings. Not much to say beyond that, as the numbers speak for themselves.

2. 1B/3B/LF/RF Nick Evans R/R 1/30/86 AAA Buffalo (hope you're sitting down): .102/.243/.271/.514 (6 for 59, 5 runs, 2b, 3 HR, 7 RBI, 11/20 BB/K)

Yikes. What's really alarming about those numbers (more alarming...I'm not sure what to say here), he's 1 for 11 against LHP. Keep in mind Mike Carp went through a similiar long slump in Binghamton last season, but he was batting .363 when he did it (37 for 185, .200). Evans, who ripped up the majority of spring training, is unfortunately going through a terrible slump to start the season, hence the absolutely putrid numbers right now. As we saw in the spring, and last season when he massacred the EL, Evans is simply too good of a hitter to be mired like this for long, he will figure it out and bounce back. Keep in mind, though, that even if he hits .300 from here on (135 for 450), his god awful April will depress his overall season line (if he hits .300 from here on, his overall season average would be .277 in 509 ABs).

3. 2B/DH Hector Pellot R/R 2/8/87 A+ St. Lucie: .159/.191/.205/.396, 7 for 44, 2 2b, 4 RBI, 1/13 BB/K, 2 SBs)

Not much to say beyond the numbers. He's still only 22, and in the FSL after hitting a decent .274/.344/.381/.725 in the Sally League at age 20, so there's some talent there, but time (and more importantly, other prospects) are passing him by in both lanes, so this might be a make or break season for Pellot, despite his age.

I'm not sure what else I can say at this point. Pitch well and lose, pitch poorly and lose, score 4 and give up 5, score 0 and give up 1...it's just a sad sad situation up in Buffalo right now. The Bisons were held to 7 hits and 3 walks today, and went 0 for 5 with RISP, leaving 8 men on base in their loss. Willy Mo Pena and Jesus Feliciano had multi hit games, while the top 3 in the order (Cory Sullivan, Andy Green, Fernando Martinez) were a combined 0 for 11. Mike Nickeas and Jose Coronado also took 0-fers. Nelson Figueroa pitched brilliantly for 7 innings, allowing just 1 run, enough for the loss.

Angel Calero went 6 strong innings, followed by 5 terrific innings from Brant Rustich, but the offense has done nothing all night, outside of a run in the 9th to tie it, Ike Davis doubled and scored on Francisco Pena's single. That's where we are, 1-1 in the 13th. I'll edit this post with a full game recap when it goes final.

St. Lucie 2, Jupiter 1 in 14 innings

As I told you earlier, Angel Calero and Brant Rustich were the majority of the story for the Mets tonight, they combined for 11 incredible innings, scattering 4 hits and a run (Calero's) between them, each struck out 7. But it was Ike Davis who ended up as the main story, he doubled and scored the tying run in the 9th, then singled and scored the winning run in the 14th, ending with a 3 for 6 day. The Mets had just 5 hits, but made 4 of the 5 count heavily. Francisco Pena's only hit drove in the Mets first run, Reese Havens' only hit drove in the Mets second run. Matias Carrillo got the win by getting the final out in the top of the 14th.

Robert Carson has been alternating good outing-bad outing so far this year, and he had a strong bounceback outing tonight, going 6 strong, allowing 3 hits and 2 unearned runs (due to Jefry Marte's 10th error of the season). Wendy Rosa and Eric Turgeon combined to give up 5 runs in 2.2 innings, but Jimmy Johnson came in with the tying run at the plate and struck him out to end it, earning his first save.

The Gnats offense exploded tonight for 11 runs on 17 hits and 3 walks, they went a blistering 8 for 18 with RISP, and left 8 men on base. Wilmer Flores, Kai Gronauer (0 for 4, run, 2 RBI, 2 Ks, .214) and Juan Lagares were the only Gnats who didn't have multiple hits tonight.

Answer: He had spent the last 2 seasons in AA, and was coming off ripping the DWL (which in my eyes is AAA level) to shreds, so in my eyes, it was justified to have him open up in AAA. Brett Wallace was just drafted in 2008, and had just 49 ABs in AA during last season. Starting him in AA was the smart thing to do.
