LAGARES SENT DOWN, EIGSTI ADDED

SAVANNAH, Ga. - Infielder Jake Eigsti is the newest member of the Sand Gnats roster, the New York Mets announced Friday. Eigsti replaces 18-year-old shortstop Juan Lagares, who was transferred to extended spring training in Port St. Lucie, Fla. Eigsti is expected to be active for Friday night’s game against the Rome Braves.

The Mets drafted Eigsti in the 29th round of the 2006 amateur draft out of Indiana State University. Last year he hit .194 in 25 games with the Brooklyn Cyclones of the New York-Penn League. In his senior year at ISU, Eigsti hit .300 with 6 home runs and 34 RBI.

Lagares was in the midst of a team best 10-game hit streak, but struggled in the field with 12 errors in 22 games at shortstop. This is the first full season of minor league baseball for Lagares.

This move makes zero sense to me. Lagares was hitting ~.265 in his last 11 games. You're telling me he can't learn how to field in Savannah? This is a really dumb move if it's for his glove. Greg Veloz is still up, hitting around .100, and Lagares gets sent down? Stupid, pure stupidity.

  1. Sometimes these moves are predicated by the players mental make up or the Mets organization may have a specific coach at the minor league facility whose specialty is something that they want Lagares to work on at St Lucie. Without knowing the particulars and the exact reasoning I think it is awfully premature to call this stupidity !

I am sure that both Lagares and Veloz are very much on the organizations radar . Just look at Hector Pellot . Last year he was clearly overmatched , just as Veloz and to a lesser extent Lagares have been this year . But he is now starting to show some of the promise that the mets saw in him when they drafted him !

With the stellar way our organization has been run since Omar revamped most everything since getting here and the great decisions they have made from top to bottom I will give them the benefit of the doubt until they prove they don't deserve it !

Twelve errors in 22 games in an awful lot . Especially from someone that was touted as more advanced than Reyes at the same age . Keep in mind also that although minor league teams primary job is to develop talent they are also in the buisness of winning and attracting fans to make a profit . The old Sand Knats are stinking up the joint so far and their terrible defense has been alot of the problem !

I would be happy as hell if they sent him to St Lucie to brush up on his fielding fundamentals and that is all there is to this ! Hopefully it isn't anything mental they are usually the toughest to get over !
