It was a game to forget for right hander Tobi Stoner, he got destroyed for 11 hits and 9 runs (all earned), in just 2.1 inning. He saw his AA ERA more then double, from 3.18 to 6.98. His overall season ERA went from 2.74 to 3.79 with the outing. Eric Brown pitched in relief and wasn't that much better, allowing 4 runs on 7 hits and 3 walks in 2.2 innings. Edgar Alfonzo and Joe Hietpas finished off the game.
The top 2 in the Met order had outstanding games, Fernando and Evans combined to go 6 for 9 with 4 runs, 3 2b, HR, 3 RBI, but they didn't get much support, the other Mets were a combined 5 for 22. Mike Carp's incredible plunge continued with an 0 for 5, he is now batting .319, down 44 points in just 2 weeks (5 for 47 since 6/18). Michael Antonini was in complete command today, firing 7.1 innings of 4 hit shutout ball, striking out 7, as the Mets won for the 8th time in 11 games, 5-0. Antonini has yet to lose a high A start, his ERA stands at a sparkling 1.71. Stephen Clyne continued to rebound from a nightmarish beginning to his season, with 1.2 innings of scoreless relief, his season's ERA is now under 7, at 6.55.
The offense was helped out by 2 errors on Clearwater's shortstop Yonderman Rodriguez, leading to 3 UER for the Mets. Ruben Tejada (0 for 4, BB, K, .251), Jordan Abruzzo (0 for 4, BB, K, .243), Josh Thole (0 for 5, 2 Ks, .292) and Brahiam Maldonado (0 for 4, 2 runs, K, .204) took 0-fers.

Maikel Cleto pitched a "quality start" (yeah, right) for the 7th time in his last 11 GS, but all he has to show for it is a 2-6 record, including some brutal NDs (his last 3 GS, 21 IP, 14 H, 5 ER, 7/13 BB/K, 0-1, 2.14 era). Today, he allowed 10 hits and 3 runs in 6 innings, striking out 4, but as usual, the offense didn't show up for him, he dropped to 2-6 with a 3.49 era. Steven Cheney pitched 3 stellar innings in relief, but the Gnats couldn't get the tying run home.
The Gnats had 12 hits and 4 walks, but left 13 men on base, a recurring theme lately for Savannah. Joaquin Rodriguez (0 for 5, .236) and Richard Pena (0 for 3, BB, 2 Ks, .225) took 0-fers.

The Cyclones bullpen imploded in the late innings, allowing 5 Renegade runs in the final 3 innings, en route to a disappointing 6-4 loss. Jim Fuller started and danced in and out of trouble for 2.2 innings, allowing 4 hits and 4 walks, but only 1 run. Wendy Rosa pitched 2.1 scoreless innings in relief, and Manuel Olivares pitched a scoreless 6th, before the wheels began falling off. Olivares, Mike Lynn, and Roy Merritt combined to allow 5 runs on 6 hits and 4 walks over the final 3 innings.
The Cyclones had 12 hits, but 3 of those came from rehabbing Dan Murphy, who scored and drove in a run. Aside from Murphy, 3 other players had multi hit games, while Zach Lutz (0 for 4, RBI, BB, K, .344), and John Servidio (0 for 4, 2 Ks, .222) took 0-fers.

Fernando Martinez, coming off a 3 hit performance in his return to Binghamton's lineup, homered (3 run shot) and walked, leading Binghamton to a 5-4 victory. The other 2 RBI came off the bat of Salvador Aguilar, the starting pitcher, who had a 2 run single in the 4th. On the mound, Aguilar was just as good as he was at the dish, allowing 3 runs (2 earned) over 7 innings, on 4 hits. He improved to 9-1, Eddie Kunz worked a dominating 9th, striking out the side, to earn his 21st save. Nick Evans (0 for 2, 2 BBs, K, .306), Mike Carp (0 for 4, K, .325), and Emmanuel Garcia (0 for 3, .224) took 0-fers.

This game will be marred by a beanball war between the two teams which led to 6 hit batters and 3 ejections (2 Met batters and 4 Clearwater batters were hit, 2 Met pitchers and 1 Clearwater pitcher was ejected).
Before all that was going on, Dylan Owen had his poorest FSL outing of the season, giving up 8 hits and 6 runs in 3.1 innings, his ERA skyrocketed half a run with the outing. Ryan Coultas came in and hit a batter in his 2.2 innings, also giving up a run on a solo homer. Casey Hoorelbeke hit 2 in his 1.1 innings, he was the first Met pitcher ejected. After a 3 batter appearance from Edgar Ramirez, German Marte hit the only batter he faced before he was ejected, and Emary Frederick came in to pitch a perfect 9th. I'd imagine there will be some suspensions for the ugliness tonight.
The offense had 8 hits and 3 walks, but were out of it after inning number 3. Clearwater 3b Clay Harris had 3 hits, all homers, he drove in 6, and then was hit twice by Hoorelbeke (which might, IMO, earn him a release, that's low class punk behavior). For the Mets, Lucas Duda (0 for 1, RBI, 2 BBs, .265), Victor Mendez (0 for 4, K, .244), and Shawn Bowman (0 for 4, K, .333) took 0-fers.

Savannah committed 3 errors which led to 2 UER off Nick Carr, which were the difference in the game. Carr pitched decently, allowing 5 hits and 4 runs (2 earned) in 6 innings, but look his 2nd loss in the Sally League. Nick Waechter kept it at 4-1, and the Gnats got 2 back, but couldn't push the tying run across.
The top of the order certainly did it's job, the top 3 went 5 for 12 with 2 runs, 2 2b, and 3 RBI, but the 4-5-6 hitters were 1 for 12 with 3 Ks. Jose Jimenez (0 for 4, K, .240), Francisco Pena (0 for 4, K, .247), and Bradley Hubbert (0 for 3, 2 Ks, .118) all took 0-fers.

Another day, another woeful offensive showing for the Cyclones, who through their first 12 games, they've scored 34 runs, an average of 2.83 runs per game, including a 9 run outburse in their 2nd game. Taking that out, they've scored 25 runs in 11 games (2.27/gm). Today, only 3 players took 0-fers, but there was only one who had a multi hit game (Will Vogl with 3). The lone RBI was off the bat of a rehabbing Dan Murphy. Vogl scored the only run. Matt Bouchard (0 for 3, 2 BBs, 2 Ks, .244), John Servidio (0 for 4, 2 Ks, .244) and Cesar Cordido (0 for 3, K, .095) took 0-fers.
Tim Stronach allowed just 2 runs over 5 innings, but with the anemic offense, that was enough for his 2nd loss. Jeff Kaplan and Rhiner Cruz each allowed a run over 2 innings.
Dan Murphy (dh) 1 for 4, RBI, .444
Zach Lutz (3b) 1 for 4, K, .393

Unlike the Cyclones, the KMets are anything but an anemic offense, they've put up 67 runs in 12 games, an average of 5.58 runs per game, including games of 13, 8, and 13. Of course, if you were looking for a glass half empty angle, they've scored half their runs in those 3 games, and just 33 in the other 9. Either way, suffice to say, they can hit, led by the Teenage Tandem of Death, 16 year old Wilmer Flores, and 19 year old Stefan Welch. Today, they went a combined 5 for 9 with 5 runs, a 3b, HR, and 6 RBI. But they were not alone, as 5 players had multi hit games, 3 players had 3 hits apiece. Jean Luc Blaquiere (0 for 4, 2 runs, BB, 2 Ks, .214), and Rafael Fernandez (the third member of the Teen Trio) went 0 for 5, dropping his average to .207.
Oscar Melendez allowed 3 runs on 4 hits and 2 walks in 3 innings, but 4 relievers combined to allow just 2 hits and a run in 6 innings, though there were 5 walks mixed in. Stephen Puhl got the win in relief.
Ignacio Medrano (2b) 2 for 4, 3 runs, 2b, 2 Ks, .342
Dan Stegall (lf) 1 for 4, run, BB, .356

Figures that the start I miss on radio would be the one Jon Niese pitches a complete game, huh? And it is a perplexing CG, at that. He went the distance, allowing 7 hits and 4 runs, all 4 runs scored in the first 4 innings. Niese had 7 innings where he faced the minimum, and gave up 2 runs apiece in the 2nd and 4th innings. In fact, Niese gave up all 4 runs on 5 hits in those 2 innings, and allowed just 2 hits and 2 walks in the remaining 7 innings.
Fernando Martinez was stellar in his return to AA, he went 3 for 5. Unfortunately, not much else happened offensively for the BMets. Mike Carp had an RBI single in the 1st, and Josh Petersen had one in the 9th, that was it. Eric Reed (0 for 4, BB, .231), Nick Evans (0 for 4, BB, 2 Ks, .308), Caleb Stewart (0 for 4, .283) and Mike Nickeas (0 for 3, BB, .176) all took 0-fers.

It was a very good bounceback outing for Eric Niesen, who'd gotten bombed for 5 hits, 3 walks and 5 runs in his last start, only allowed a run on 6 hits over 6 innings tonight. Emary Frederick worked a scoreless 9th for his 4th save of the season.
Once again, it was Josh Thole who had a big game, 2 hits (both 2b), a run, RBI and walk, pushing his average to .295 and his OBP to .391. Shawn Bowman also had 2 hits, he's batting .385 over his first handful of games back. Ruben Tejada (0 for 3, .256), Lucas Duda (0 for 3, .268), and Luis Rivera (0 for 3, K, .230) took 0-fers.

St. Lucie was 1 hit. Ouch. The lone hit was Ezequiel Carrera's 9th triple. Lucas Duda drew a walk, and that was the sum total of the Met offense in Game 2 (sound familiar?). Weirdly, Angel Calero only pitched 3 innings for a second straight outing, giving up a run on 3 hits. Elvyz Quezada did the same, and Edgar Ramirez gave up 2 in his inning of work.

Scott Moviel had a good, not great, start, going just 5 innings, allowing 3 hits and 2 runs, picking up his 8th win of the season. On the positive side, his ERA is now under 5 for the season (4.94). Julio Polanco pitched 2 perfect innings for his 4th save.
Greg Veloz had a big game, with 2 XBH and 2 runs scored, Juan Lagares had an RBI, and Francisco Pena had 2 hits. Lagares (0 for 3, RBI, K, .300), Jose Jimenez (0 for 2, BB, .244), Nick Giarraputo (0 for 3, 2 Ks, .250), Richard Pena (0 for 3, K, .228), and Carlos Guzman (0 for 2, K, .235) all took 0-fers for the Gnats, who managed just 6 hits.

Hey, at least Savannah did twice as well as St. Lucie! Yes, they were 2 hit in the nightcap. Greg Veloz and Sean McCraw had the hits, McCraw also drew a walk. A Bradley Hubbert walk rounded out the sum total of the Gnats offense in Game 2 (sound familiar?)
Weird managing going on in the minors tonight, Elvin Ramirez was pulled with a 4 hit shutout going (he was pulled after 4). Josh Stinson came in and allowed 2 runs on 2 hits and 4 walks in 3 innings, taking his 4th loss.

Dan Murphy joined Ryan Church on the rehab trail today, and today it was Murphy with the 3 hit game, as the Cyclones beat Aberdeen in their final AB (Will Vogl walkoff 1b). 4 players had multi hit games, while 3 took 0-fers. Ryan Church (0 for 3, 2 Ks, .500), John Servidio (0 ofr 2, run, 2 BBs, .270) and Ralph Henriquez (0 for 4, .263).
At least one Pedro Martinez had a good game, Pedro P Martinez went 6 innings, allowing just 3 runs (2 earned) on 6 hits. Mike Lynn started the 7th and walked the first 2 to face him, but Jimmy Johnson came in and bailed him out, then finished off the game to pick up his 3rd win in relief.

Another big game for Stefan Welch with 2 more hits in 3 trips, including his 3rd triple of the short season (I groaned as I typed it, pun not intended). Wilmer had a solo homer in 4 trips, his 2nd on the year, and Gabriel Zavala (21 year old OFer from Venezuela) had his 2nd 3 hit game on the season, pushing his average to .300. Dan Stegall (0 for 2, BB, .366), Jean Luc Blaquiere (0 for 4, K, .250) and Rafael Fernandez (0 for 3, .250) took 0-fers.
John Holdkom got a second start and was just as good as his first, he went 5 innings again, scattering 4 hits and striking out 6, he walked just 2. Raul Batis went 3.2 innings allowing 4 hits and 4 UER, Manuel Alvarez came in to get the final out of the game for his first save.

A Little Reminiscing as We Hit a Milestone here on MPH...
You know, we recently hit 1,000 posts made by David and I (6/26 Minor League Report, which is below this post), and I was reminiscing about when/how/why we started this blog. Both of us started out on the mets.com boards in 2005, and I guess you could say that I "studied" under a poster named "Rapdog" who did daily minor league recaps. He took off at the tail end of the 05 season because that board is full of festering douchebags (took me a year after that to realize it), and I took over to finish out the 05 season. David and I first "met" during an AIM chat room I believe in August of 2005 (and we really haven't stopped talking since, we're really good friends now). We both had an ... interest in the minor leagues. He first came up with the idea for what would become MPH before the 2006 season, but I wasn't ready to go with it then. After doing daily minor league reports on mets.com for the 06 season, and subsequently seeing them go up in smoke because the mods there are pole smoking Nazi fucktards, David and I made a blog, and I came up with the name, MetsProspectHub.
When it first started, it was a blank white background with black text, and to top it off, I didn't even have my own account, I was using David's. It was archane to say the least, but we got a few things squared away inside of our first week or so. I got my own account the next day ;) Our first post was David's first top 10 list, Mike Carp was ranked 6th, Niese 7th. They're now our consensus 3/2 prospects, mostly due to trades of Gomez, Humber, Guerra, and the graduation of Pelfrey. My first top 10 list had Humber ranked ahead of Pelfrey, Fernando ranked 5th (!), and Carp/Niese 7/8, with Henry Owens 10th. Needless to say, we've since developed alot more knowledge, and understanding of the minors, and have branched out into distinct philosophies (I remember in the beginning, people would accuse us of agreeing on everything).
I'm not sure quite when it happened, but I started to take over the writing slowly but surely, and David sort of faded into the background, making tweaks to the blog, adding the whole run of widgets you see on the right side, making the blog much better on the eyes, and throwing together our first banner. I came up with the idea to do the System Audit as a way of really kickstarting the blog, and segewaying into our first regular season.
Reviewing some of those early 06/07 posts, can I toot my own horn a bit?
My Thoughts on Mike Pelfrey (May 2007)
Guess what he's done the last 4-5 starts to finally enjoy success in the majors? Oddly enough, our first post to garner 10 comments was a Gameday Links post from June 12th 2007 (because I asked who uses them, lol). And then on 6/14/07, a portent of things to come
The New York Mets Quit (June 2007)
So there's a look back at the blog and the point of view from Tejesh. David will edit this post later with his look back and horn tooting.

This is our 1000th post on MPH.
New Orleans 6, Memphis 8
The Zs trailed 6-0 after 1, as Ruddy Lugo got bombed for 4 hits (including a homer), 3 walks and 6 runs in just 1.1 innings. Tim McNab pitched a decent 3.2 innings of long relief, allowing 5 hits and 2 walks, but just 2 runs, unfortunately, those runs ended up being the difference. Nate Field and Ivan Maldonado finished off the game with 3 scoreless innings.
The Zs offense managed 8 hits and 6 hits, but struck out 13 times, 10 of those coming from Cardinal prospect Jaime Garcia. Chris Aguila (0 for 4, 2 Ks, .287) and Michel Abreu (0 for 4, run, 3 Ks, .257) took 0-fers.

Before I start the recap, thanks to Adam Rubin for posting Brad Holt's pitch count on his blog (http://www.nydailynews.com/blogs/mets).
Holt was in complete command today, giving up just a walk in 5 innings, striking out 6. He had a 2:1 strike to ball ratio (54, 27), and got 6 groundouts and 3 flyouts along with 6 Ks. Brandon Moore pitched no part of an inning, giving up 2 runs (1 earned). Rhiner Cruz, Matias Carrillo and Yury Santana finished off the game, Santana getting his 4th save.
The offense had 15 hits tonight, as opposed to the 6 in 12 innings last night, but only 4 after the 5th inning (mirror image of the Mets, much?). 5 players had multi hit games, all of them were sorely needed, for different reasons. Ryan Church, making his first appearance since a PH AB a few weeks ago, went 3 for 3 with a run, 2b and RBI, and he played the field. Good to see, hope he is back tomorrow (DH in the YS game). Matt Bouchard, Zach Lutz, Eric Campbell and Josh Satin also had multi hit games, while Will Vogl (who took over for Church after the 5th - 0 for 1, run, K, .150), and Luis Alen (0 for 4, .000) took 0-fers.

Another night, another romper room day for Teen Sensations Wilmer Flores (16) and Stefan Welch (19). See folks, this is what Pedro Martinez' signing got you, high end Latin talent signing for less to join the Mets. Now if only...(something something slotting system, something something cheap). Ahem, right. Oh yeah, lest I forget, 19 year old Rafael Fernandez also had 3 hits, so the Three Teens combined for 10 of Kingsports 12 hits. Nice. 6/25 Minor League Report! PARNELL, GEE, Flores, MARTE!
Binghamton 5, Altoona 2
The Mets fell behind 1-0 after a half inning, and then did something about it, pouring across 5 in the bottom of the first, which would be enough on this night, they won 5-2 behind 7 terrific innings from Bobby Freakin Parnell. Parnell went 7, allowing a run on 5 hits, striking out 6, picking up his 7th win of the season. Eddie Kunz worked a hitless 9th for his 19th save of the season.
The offense had 10 hits and 5 walks, led by 2 hits apiece from Jon Malo and Nick Evans. All of a sudden, with Carp's slump and Evans' heating up, they're just 18 points apart in average. Carp (0 for 2, run, 2 BBs, K, .332), and Mike Nickeas (0 for 2, RBI, BB, .214) took 0-fers.

Ruben Tejada continues to torch the FSL in June. 2 more hits today, he's now got 31 hits in June, and discounting an 0 for 4 he took on June 1st, he's batting .403/.452/.494 for the month, and has his season average up at .259. Dillon Gee also continues to put on one hellova show in June, he's 3-0 in 4 GS, in 29.1 innings, he's allowed 18 hits and 3 runs (a ridiculous 0.92 era), with just ONE walk and 17 Ks. Wow. He has not failed to pitch into the 7th, and has failed to finish 7 innings just once this month.

Savannah 5, Rome 8
Tony Maccani, making his first pitching appearance in his career (he's a catcher) gave up 3 runs in the 13th to take the loss, as Savannah fell 8-5. Not really sure why the Gnats decided to basically throw the game away, but whatever. This game was actually lost in the 8th and 9th innings when Jose Bierd (2) and Nick Abel (1 - tying run) allowed 3 runs to turn a 5-2 lead into a 5-5 tie. Brant Rustich's 2nd start was much better then his first, he went 4 innings and allowed just 2 hits and an UER. Bradley Burns pitched 3 innings of 1 run relief, and was in line for the win until the bullpen meltdown.
The Gnats had 15 hits in 13 innings, and drew 6 walks, but left an army on base, 18 left on in 15 innings. Only one unlucky soul played the whole game and took an 0-fer, Casey Craig went 0 for 5, run, RBI, BB, K, dropping his average to .313. Brooklyn 0, Hudson Valley 1 in 12 innings
Wow. Even on Gameday, this was like watching a slow moving train wreck. Brooklyn managed just SIX hits tonight, and after the game, just one regular is batting over .230. That's right, one regular is batting over .230, 6 players are hitting under .200. What a godawful baseball team. John Servidio had the only multi hit game, he's hitting .300. 5 players took 0-fers, Michael Parker (0 for 3, 3 Ks, .071), Brandon Kawal (0 for 2, K, .143), Luis Alen (0 for 5, .000), Jefferies Tatford (0 for 4, 2 Ks, .222) and Will Vogl (0 for 4, .158).

Willie Collazo's defense betrayed him today, he gave up 7 hits and 4 runs in 5 innings, but only one was earned, as the useless piece of shit known as Abraham Nunez committed 2 errors which led to 3 UER off Collazo. The offense tried to come back a few times, but fell short by a run.
Argenis Reyes, Val Pascucci, Raul Gonzalez, Gustavo Molina and Anderson Hernandez all took 0-fers. The Zs had just 5 hits, but drew 8 walks.

The game wasn't as close as the score indicates, this was a 6-0 game heading to the bottom of the 9th, the Mets put up 4, but Mike Nickeas grounded out with the tying runs on base to end it. Nick Evans and Caleb Stewart had multi hit games, while Mike Carp, Ambi Concepcion (0 for 3, K, .245), Mike Nickeas (0 for 4, .250) and Jon Malo (0 for 3, .227) took 0-fers.
Tobi Stoner had his first rough outing in AA (11 ip, 8 h, 2 er prior 2 GS), he went 6, giving up 9 hits and 4 runs, taking his first loss. Eddie Camacho pitched 2 scoreless innings in relief, and the runs that ended up as the difference were given up by recently re-promoted Edgar Alfonzo.

Ruben Tejada capped off his big day with a walkoff single in the bottom of the 9th, scoring Ezequiel Carrera (who'd doubled), and giving the Mets a 3-2 victory. Tejada had 3 hits, and is now batting .387/.439/.493/.932 in his last 75 ABs (6/2-6/24; 29 for 75, 12 runs, 3 2b, 3b, HR, 9 RBI, 7/4 BB/K, SB). Not bad for an 18 year old in the FSL after playing in the VSL/GCL last season. The top 3 in the order (Carrera, Tejada and Duda) were a combined 7 for 12 with 2 runs, 2 2b, 2 RBI. Josh Thole and Jordan Abruzzo continued the catching tandem of death routine they've been perfecting the last few days, going 4 for 8 with a run. Victor Mendez (0 for 4, .296), DJ Wabick (0 for 4, .275), and Luis Rivera (0 for 4, .233) took 0-fers.
Michael Antonini had another fine outing for St. Lucie, his 3rd in a row. He has yet to fail to go at least 6 innings, and he has yet to give up more then 2 runs in any outing. Tonight was no exception, he went 6.1 innings, allowing 6 hits and 2 runs to raise his ERA to 2.37. However, he is getting the Angel Calero treatment, he took another ND. Emary Frederick got the win in relief with a scoreless 9th.

Argenis Reyes, Val Pascucci, Raul Gonzalez, Gustavo Molina and Anderson Hernandez all took 0-fers. The Zs had just 5 hits, but drew 8 walks.

1. Fernando Martinez was PH for last night in the GCL, it was most likely due to the weather, it was rainy down there, Brahiam Maldonado was also pulled.
2. I have an opportunity to send some questions off to Savannah Sand Gnats pitcher Brant Rustich, and I've decided to open up the floor to you guys to submit some questions. So comment this post, or send em in via chatbox, or email (metsprospecthub@yahoo.com). Please send questions in by June 30th, thanks.

Analysis of Jon Niese and Mike Carp
OK, here's the deal, I began writing an article, and then realized I didn't want to rehash the top 15 list I did last month, which is what I was on my way to doing. So I scrapped the idea, but I'd already done writeups for Niese and Carp. So instead of throwing that stuff away, I decided to post it. Enjoy. And hey, if you guys like it, I'll do some more writeups like these.
-------------------------------
LHSP Jon Niese
After spending the balance of the 2007 season working on his conditioning and his control (sacrificing everything else), Jon Niese arrived in AA Binghamton off an outstanding big league spring training (1-0, 3.12 era, 3 GS, 8.2 IP, 5 H, 3 ER, 7/6 BB/K).
In 2007, Niese carved his walk rate to a scant 34 in 143.1 innings (2.13 per 9) from 67 in 133.2 innings (4.51 per 9). However, this was at the expense of every other peripheral. His hit rate spiked to 155 in 143.1 innings (9.73 per 9) from 129 in 133.2 innings (8.69 per 9). His strikeout rate also deteriorated, from 142 in 133.2 innings (9.56 per 9) to 122 in 143.1 innings (7.66 per 9). With all the work done to lower his walk rate, it paid off in the total number of baserunners Niese had to deal with, as measured by WHIP (Walks + Hits per Inning Pitched). It was 1.32 in 2007, versus 1.47 in 2007, a drop of .15 baserunners per inning, or 1.35 per 9 innings.
2008 has seen him attempt to consolidate the improvements from 2007, with the other periphs from 2006. His walk rate is in between the two extremes at 3.48 per 9 (32 in 82.2 innings), and his hit rate is down from his 2007 levels, 8.16 per 9 (75 in 82.2 innings). His WHIP is at the lowest of his career, at 1.29. The only remaining flaw in Niese's game is his inability to pitch deep into games, although that may be the organization holding him back (he pitched 6 innings on 6/22/06 throwing 88 pitches, and could've been pushed to go 7 if they'd chosen to).
Niese is death on lefties with his 88-92 fastball and low to mid 70s curve, he is holding EL lefties to a .226 BAA, and a 1.96 era in 18.1 innings. Righties are not killing him, he's held them to a .245 BAA and a 3.36 era in 64.1 innings. All 3 of his homers allowed are to RHB. Niese yielded 9 homers last year in 134.1 regular season innings (.60 per 9), and he's further cut that down to .33 per 9 this season.
1B/LF Mike Carp
While Carp is in a miserable 2 for 24 slump, he is still enjoying his best pro season to date, with a .341/.413/.518/.931 line in 249 ABs in Binghamton.
That is a far cry from the utterly lost season Carp suffered through in Binghamton last year, where he hit .251/.337/.387/.724 in 359 ABs. Carp has already had 26 XBH this season, whereas he only had 27 all of last season, he's on a pace to walk 65 times and strike out 90, vastly improved from 2007's pace of 39/75. His BB/K ratio in 2008 is 0.744, vastly improved from the 0.520 it was last year.
However, the biggest improvement in Carp's game, and the reason we (and I in particular) have been absolutely pounding the table on him, is his numbers vs LHP. Last season, he was a pathetic 19 for 110 vs LHP, a stunningly laughable .173 with a putrid .422 OPS, and 25 Ks in 110 ABs (.227 K rate). However, this season, he's gone nuclear on LHP, batting .310/.348/.488/.836 in 84 ABs. He's got 26 hits, including 7 XBH, and a 15/84 K rate (.179). With the way Carp can destroy RHP (.279/.377/.457/.834) in a down season last year, and .358/.443/.533/.976 in a very good up season this year, Carp needs to only hold his own vs LHP at the big league level (think .750 OPS or so), to be a very productive MLB player.

6/22 Minor League Report! HENRIQUEZ! KINGSPORT!
Pre-empting for breaking news: Fernando Martinez was 1 for 3 in the GCL today, but was PH for in the 9th by Valentin Ramos. That can't be a good sign, one would think. While I have the boxscore in front of me...
Fernando Martinez (dh) 1 for 3, K
Brahiam Maldonado (lf) 1 for 3, 2b, 2 RBI, .364
Darren Clark (lf) 2 for 2, .500

ZOMG! It's a Minor League Report that's actually posted the day of the games! What. The. Hell!??!?!?!?!?!?!?!? LOL.
New Orleans 0, Omaha 3
Nelson Figueroa had another very good game for the Zs, but the offense was a no show, getting just 5 hits. Figueroa allowed 4 hits and 2 runs (1 earned) in 7 innings, which earned him his 2nd loss of the season. The hits went to Argenis Reyes, Raul Casanova, Raul Gonzalez, Jesus Feliciano and Anderson Hernandez, who all had one apiece. Abraham Nunez (0 for 3, K, .199), Chris Aguila (0 for 4, K, .298), Val Pascucci (0 for 4, .301) and John Rodriguez (0 for 2, BB, K, .286) took 0-fers.
Argenis Reyes (2b) 1 for 4, .285
Raul Casanova (c) 1 for 4, 2b, K, .368
Raul Gonzalez (dh) 1 for 4, .326
Jesus Feliciano (cf) 1 for 3, BB, .298
Anderson Hernandez (ss) 1 for 3, .185

Tim McNab 2 IP, 2 H, ER, 2.92 era, 18:9:9, 2:3
Binghamton 7, Trenton 3
I listened to this game via stream, and also charted Niese's pitch count, so here goes a detailed recap. Jon Niese had a very rough first two innings, throwing 44 pitches through 2, 20 in the first (14 strikes, 6 balls), and 24 in the second (11 strikes, 13 balls). The second inning was the only one in which Trenton scored, taking advantage of Niese's wildness. His line through 2 was 3 h, 3 er, 2 bb, k. After that, however, Niese settled down very nicely, throwing just 44 pitches over the next 4 innings (29 strikes, 15 balls), and allowing just one hit. He ended up throwing 88 pitches in the game over 6 innings, 54 of them for strikes, 34 balls. He left this game trailing 3-2 (as did I, to go watch Big Pelf).
Eude Brito pitched a scoreless 7th, and the Mets rallied for 3 in the top of the 8th to take Niese off the hook. They added a pair in the 9th and won 7-3, Tim LaVigne pitched 2 scoreless innings for the save.
Every regular got at least one hit, except for Salvador Paniagua, who was 0 for 3 with 2 Ks (.286). Nick Evans, Ambi Concepcion, Josh Petersen and Emmanuel Garcia each had 2 hits.
Jose Coronado (ss) 1 for 5, .259
Nick Evans (1b) 2 for 5, 2 runs, 2b, HR, RBI, .303
Mike Carp (lf) 1 for 5, .341

Eude Brito IP, 2 H, 2.68 era, W (4-1)
Tim LaVigne 2 IP, 2 Ks, 2.95 era, SV (6)
St. Lucie was wained out
Savannah 3, Rome 7
It was a very rough game for Elvin Ramirez, he didn't survive the first inning, giving up 4 hits and 3 runs in just 0.2 innings of work. Nick Waechter did a great job in long relief, going 6 innings allowing just a run on 3 hits, but the offense couldn't get over the hump, pulling within 1 and 4-3 before Jose Bierd game in to give up 3 runs in the 8th.
The offense managed just 7 hits and 3 runs, one a solo homer by Juan Lagares (his only hit in 5 trips), and then RBIs by Sean McCraw and Carlos Guzman. Greg Veloz (0 for 4, BB, K, .254), Jose Jimenez (0 for 5, .244) and Richard Pena (0 for 2, run, 2 BBs, K, .239) took 0-fers.
Juan Lagares (ss) 1 for 5, run, HR, RBI, K, .308
Casey Craig (lf) 1 for 5, 3 Ks, .329
Joaquin Rodriguez (dh) 2 for 4, run, 2 Ks, .247
Sean McCraw (c) 1 for 3, RBI, BB, K, .333
Nick Giarraputo (3b) 1 for 2, 2 BBs (A debut)
Carlos Guzman (rf) 1 for 3, RBI, BB, .264
Elvin Ramirez 0.2 IP, 4 H, 3 ER, BB, 3.80 era, L (5-6)
Nick Waechter 6 IP, 3 H, ER, BB, 7 Ks, HR, 3.38 era
Jose Bierd 1.1 IP, 3 H, 3 ER, 2 Ks, 2 HR, 2.10 era (Bierd had surrendered just 2 homers in 28.2 innings before today)
Brooklyn 4, Aberdeen 2, 10 innings.
Pedro P Martinez over 2 starts has allowed 1 earned run in 10.1 innings, striking out 8. He is almost 23 years old, getting long in the tooth for the short season leagues. After Rhiner Cruz allowed a run in the 7th, Will Vogl hit a solo shot in the 9th to tie it, and the Cones scored 2 in the 10th (Tatford single, Satin sac fly) to take the lead, 4-2. Yury Santana pitched a hitless 10th to pick up his 3rd save.
The top 4 in the order (Matt Bouchard (.238, ss), Brandon Richey (.000, 3b), Kirk Nieuwenhuis (.217, cf) and Eric Campbell (.235, 1b) went a combined 0 for 19 with a run and 3 walks. Ouch. Brandon Kawal also took an 0-fer, he went 0 for 3, and is hitting .167 on the season. John Servidio and Ralph Henriquez had multi hit games.
John Servidio (rf) 2 for 4, run, 2b, .333
Jefferies Tatford (ph, dh) 1 for 2, RBI, K, .364
Josh Satin (2b) 1 for 2, run, RBI, 2 BBs, .063
Ralph Henriquez (c) 4 for 5, 2b, RBI, K, .444

Jimmy Johnson 0.2 IP, 0.00 era, W (2-0)
Yury Santana IP, BB, 3 Ks, 0.00 era, SV (3)
Kingsport 13, Johnson City 4
The Mets pounded out 16 hits and drew 4 walks on their way to a 13-4 dismantling of Johnson City today, 7 of the 9 regulars had multi hit games, shockingly, Pedro Zapata managed to take an 0-fer today, he went 0 for 5 with a run scored and 2 Ks, and is now batting .080 on the season. John Holdzkom got a surprise start and had the best outing of his pro career, with 5 tremendous innings, allowing just 3 hits, striking out 8. Raul Batis piggybacked behind Holdzkom, and pitched 3 perfect innings before being roughed up for 2 hits and 4 runs in the 9th, when the game was firmly out of reach.
Ignacio Medrano (2b) 2 for 5, run, 2b, RBI, K, .368
Dan Stegall (lf) 2 for 5, run, BB, 2 Ks, .458

The Mets faced future ace to be David Price today, for the second time this season, and they roughed Price up a bit, he gave up all 3 runs on 5 hits in 6.1 innings. However, it wasn't enough, as Eric Niesen had a terrible game, giving up 5 runs on 5 hits and 3 walks in 4 innings to pick up his 8th loss of the season. That snapped a string of 5 good starts in a row (3-2, 2.10). Naturally, the Mets much maligned bullpen pitched 4 perfect innings (insert eyeroll here).
Ruben Tejada did well against Price, with 2 hits in 3 trips. Jason Jacobs also had a multi hit game, he drove in 2 of the 3 St. Lucie runs. Slumping Lucas Duda drove in the other. Ignacio Medrano had a big game for the Mets with 4 hits and 4 RBI, but the pitching didn't hold up it's end of the bargain. Mark Cohoon (12th round North Central Texas College) got roughed up for 5 runs on 5 hits and 2 walks in just 2 innings, but good outings in relief from Collin McHugh (18th round Berry College) and Stephen Puhl allowed the offense a chance to rally back, before Alvarez gave it away.

6/20 Minor League Report! Parnell, THOLE, GEE, LAGARES,
Tonight's Song: DaRude - Sandstorm
New Orleans 12, Iowa 8
The final score was not indicative of how much of a blowout this game was. Ruddy Lugo bounced back off 2 straight disasterous starts (9.2 ip, 17 h, 14 er, 5/5 bb/k, 0-2, 13.03 era), with a good one tonight. He went 7 innings, allowing 4 hits and 2 runs. Nate Field had a disasterous monumental meltdown in the 9th inning, allowing 5 hits (including a homer), 2 walks, and 6 runs, all while getting just ONE out, turning a 12-2 laugher into a 12-8 heart attack. Tim McNab came in to get the final 2 outs, preventing the disaster from culminating.
Every regular position player had at least one hit, with 3 recording multi hit games. The Zs are now back to .500 at 38-38.

Another good outing for Bobby Freakin Parnell tonight, he bounced back off a subpar start his last time out (5.2 ip, 10 h, 5 er). Tonight, he went 6, allowing just 4 hits and a run, and more importantly, only one walk, and 6 Ks. Walks have plagued Parnell this season, he'd walked 14 in 22.2 innings in April, and then 19 in 35.2 innings in May. However, in June, in 21.2 innings, he's walked just 7, a very good sign. Eddie Kunz worked a scoreless 9th to pick up his 17th save of the season.
Mike Carp, coming off a torrid 100 AB stretch (5/19-6/17, 40 for 97, 14 runs, 7 2b, 3 HR, 20 RBI, 19/16 BB/K, .412/.509/.577), is 0 for his last 12 with 3 Ks. Mike Nickeas was the only Met with more then one hit, and 4 Mets took 0-fers. Eric Reed (0 for 5, 3 Ks, .237), Nick Evans (0 for 3, RBI, BB, K, .298), Mike Carp (0 for 4, 3 Ks, .344), and Jon Malo (0 for 3, BB, .241). The Mets are now a season high 8 over .500 at 40-32.

Dillon Gee was in complete control tonight, he took a no hitter into the 7th, losing it with 2 outs to JT Hall on a 2b. More on Gee later, but he went 8 innings tonight, allowing 3 hits, striking out 5. Emary Frederick, Edgar Alfonzo and German Marte pitched the 9th, Marte getting his first save.
The top 5 in the order went a combined 2 for 18 with 2 walks, but the offense came from the bottom of the lineup. Josh Thole had a huge game going 3 for 3 with 3 runs, Shawn Bowman drove in a run, and DJ Wabick drove in 3. Ezequiel Carrera (0 for 3, BB, .256), Ruben Tejada (0 for 3, BB, K, .244), Lucas Duda (0 for 4, K, .271), and JR Voyles (0 for 4, 3 Ks, .241) all took 0-fers. The Mets sank to 21-50.

Brant Rustich's first pro start went about as disasterously as it could have, he allowed a run in the 2nd, and didn't escape the 3rd, allowing 6 more. The final line was unpretty: 2.1 ip, 7 h, 7 r, 5 er, k, hr. Bradley Burns made his A debut with 2.2 innings of 2 hit, 2 run (0 earned) relief, and Julio Polanco finished off the disasterous game.
Juan Lagares made his season debut today, and it was a good one, he went 3 for 4. Not much else to smile about tonight, the lone RBI came off the bat of Francisco Pena (RBI 2b), with the run scored going to Jose Jimenez. Casey Craig (0 for 4, K, .329), Joaquin Rodriguez (0 for 4, K, .246), Richard Pena (0 for 4, 2 Ks, .240) and Jacob Elgsti (0 for 4, .232) all took 0-fers. The Gnats are now 34-38.

Roy Merritt finished the 3rd, and then Scott Shaw pitched 4 tremendous innings piggybacking Schwinden, he allowed just a hit and walk, striking out EIGHT. Shaw was our 13th round pick this year from U of Illonis Champaign (looks like it wasn't the sweet stuff Willie was on about last year, huh?). Wendy Rosa and Jimmy Johnson (not the guy on FOX) worked the 8th, and Yury Santana got his second save with a scoreless 9th. The Cyclones are now 3-1.

The Mets put up 3 in the first, only to watch Zachary Rosenbaum (19th round UNC Charlotte, no relation to TVs Lex Luthor) give it all back in the 2nd. Rosenbaum allowed 4 hits, 2 walks and 4 runs over his 1.2 innings, taking his first loss of the season. Jorge Rodriguez, Michael Powers (31st round U of "Especially In" Michigan), Erik Turgeon (25th round, U of Connecticut) pitched 6.1 innings of 3 hit 1 run relief, though the run Rodriguez gave up ended up being the difference in the end.
Offensively, the Mets managed just 6 hits, but drew 3 walks (all from the top 2 in the order). 4 players took 0-fers, also including the top 2 in the order. Dan Stegall (0 for 3, run, RBI, BB, .467), Rafael Fernandez (0 for 2, run, 2 BBs, K, .167), Pedro Zapata (0 for 4, .125), and Stefan Welch (0 for 4, .100). (This writeup/analysis on Dillon Gee courtesy "acerimusdux" on NYFS) Last time I saw Dillon Gee in Vero, he went 7IP 5H 1R 8SO. So this is the second time I've seen him look pretty dominant. Actually, I think the only guy with a really good hit off him last time was J.T. Hall, the same guy who broke up the no-hitter tonight with a double down the 3B line.
Last time, I think he was doing it with mostly the fastball and a real nice slider. This time, I also saw more of both a slow breaking pitch with straight drop, and a changeup with some nice screwball action.
Scouting reports I've seen had him as FB, SL, CU, but it looks to me like he's throwing 4 pitches now, all of them looking good, with outstanding command. Really pounds the zone and gets guys out a lot of different ways.
I think we may have our next Brian Bannister. Throws a bit harder too.

Willie Collazo had a decent outing today, going 6 innings, allowing 3 runs on 8 hits, but his offense did nothing for him, so he took his 4th loss of the season.

Ruben Tejada had a breakout game in St. Lucie, getting on base 5 times in 6 trips with 3 singles, a homer, and walk. For the month of June, Tejada is hitting .360/.411/.475 (22 for 61, 2 2b, 3b, HR, 7 RBI, 5/5 BB/K, 2/2 SBs). Ezequiel Carrera was on base twice, with a single and homer, so the top of the lineup did it's job. Lucas Duda, out of the 3 hole, broke out of a month long slump with 2 hits and a walk. The three of them combined to score all 5 Met runs. Victor Mendez and recently promoted catcher Jordan Abruzzo had the other 2 RBI.
All this was in back of Michael Antonini, who earned his first high A win with 6.2 terrific innings, allowing just 4 hits and a run, while striking out 6.

Steven Chenry worked 2 innings, giving up a run in the bottom of the 10th, but the Gnats held on for a 5-4 win.
The first 7 hitters had at least one hit, but the bottom 2 (Bradley Hubbert and Jacob Elgsti (.239)) went a combined 0 for 8, Hubbert struck out twice in his A debut. Gnat hitters struck out 12 times in the game.
