The Mets draft today was a TRAVESTY!

Not only do we take a plethora of middle relievers, we don't take ANY middle infielders. NOT ONE! Ryan Dent was on the board for us, John Tolisano was on the board for us. We didn't take Matt Harvey, he was on the board for us. I would've HATED to have Nick Noonan available at 42, because right now, I firmly believe Omar would've taken Kunz over him, and that would've sent me off the ledge.

Seriously, this draft was a total travesty on the part of the Mets, Omar Minaya, and the front office. I don't give half a shit if Eddie Kunz makes it to the majors later this year. I don't. Our bullpen is solid enough outside of Blowenweis. Ryan Dent, Matt Harvey, John Tolisano and Cole St Clair would've been a TERRIFIC top 4 for us. Actually, we could've gotten all 4, plus Kunz. Kunz, Dent, Tolisano, Harvey, St. Clair at 42, 47, 77, 93, 99.

And, for the record....I realize Cole St. Clair wasn't taken today, but it's more a matter of principal. We didn't take much in the way of high upside prospects here. St. Clair is an example of the type of high upside we should've taken.

So much for the rumor that the Mets would spend money for players who fell. Shame on the Wilpons for bowing to Bud Selig's wish for everyone to stick to slot. ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!?!?!?!?!? SLOT???? A completely horrible draft. Disasterous. A joke. There's a reason the Angels have the best farm system in baseball. You wanna know what that reason is? They DON'T STICK TO SLOT, THEY TAKE PLAYERS AND THEN PAY THEM.

Omar better redeem himself and pick up a few Latin American prospects in the international FA signing period.

This draft gets a D, and the only thing saving it from an F is Omar's track record on the draft (Parnell, Smith, Niese, Stinson, etc...)

  1. Hey bro come in off the ledge ! I find it VERY hard to believe when internet bloggers deem themselves fit to think they are more intelligent and know more about conducting a good draft than the professionals , especially a professional with a track record like Omar Minaya .

But the biggest thing that made me believe that you don't have any reason to try to so harshly critisize the 2007 draft picks . Was your comment about not taking any MIFers . Anyone with 10 minutes worth of scouting experience would know that you NEVER , EVER draft in baseball (or any other sport) for need . Those types of decisions bring you the Sam Bowie's of the world and leave the Micheal Jordan's on the board !

Sorry dog but it seems to me that you are taking BA (and other alternate scouting sites) and their second rate scouting (don't you ever wonder WHY these guys aren't working for a ML team if they are ALL THAT?) as gospel . And not trusting the guys that are actually REAL professionals .

Now I know that you can't possibly be THAT short sighted that because we have a good pen (and starting staff) in 2007 you wouldn't draft pitchers (even middle relievers which the way you characterize them is a gross understatement of their talents and projections for your purpose of denouncing them , have you considered a career as a spinmiester for one of the two butt wipe political parties we have in this country ?) and concentrate on middle INFer's because we don't have many in the pipeline that will be ready soon ! Even though it will probably years before most if any at all of these picks makes their way to the parent club .

  2. better MIF'ers out of Latin America than the draft anyway... besides, before too long, the Mets will have cornered the market on Dominican players. Imagine 8 Jose Reyes' with some drafted pitchers. woo-hoo.

  3. I agree with the previous poster that it's pretty presumptuous to criticize the Mets so harshly without acknowledging the fact that they have far more information available than we do. There's just no way for us to know the reasoning behind the decisions, and to call the draft a "travesty" is pretty unreasonable.

That said, I suspect your point about International FA's is the most important one. The Mets have shown a propensity in the last few years to spend on amateurs in Latin America (Guerra, Pena, Fernando), who thus far look to be working out pretty well for them.

It may be that there are some International FA's that the Mets feel offer a better ROI than a player like Matt Harvey. And if that's the case, I'd much rather see the Mets make what they feel is a sound investment than see them give a big bonus to a draftee who is highly rated, but the team may see as less likely to pan out.

As you point out yourself, Omar's got a pretty good track record. It might be worth recognizing that not only might he be more qualified than us to make these decisions, he is almost certainly better informed than we are.

  4. Taking high upside MiFers > Taking limited/no upside college middle relievers. Every time. EVERY TIME.

Look, you guys want to "praise be the lord" Omar, that's fine. Go right ahead. I refuse to do that. Yes, Omar's made me look like an idiot many many times, I'll take that risk. This draft was a travesty. Completely and totally. We got ZERO upside in this draft, zero. Nada. None.

You wanna use the tired cliche of "they know more then you! You're just a 23 year old internet blogger!", go right ahead. You know what? I don't have any doubt in the world they know more then me. I just absoultely and totally believe they fucked up this draft in every way imagineable.

  5. To critisize the draft or anything else they do is fine . In diversity of opinion there is strength . But to totally denounce at this early juncture and speak in absolutes as you are doing especially on something as subjective as a baseball draft is way over the top bro !

I would like to point out that last years draft at the time it was made was also called a total botch and a waste of time by many . We have Smith as a mainstay in the BP already . Mulvey looking great at AA and looking like a good bet as part of a not so distant rotation future and even Hector Pellot after struggling mightily his first year is turning in a credible showing in A ball still at a young age and may actually be one of those future MIFers that you seem to covet so much .

And that is solely speaking on the first three picks if you like I can pick more than a hand full of the lower round guys like Stegall and Stoner among others that have been preforming well past what the so called "EXPERTS" form BA and Baseball Prospectus were bashing a few short months ago !

Remember these same guys that bashed the Mets draft last year were the same guys that had the Mets system as a whole near the bottom at the beginning of the year and from the top third to middle of the pack at years end !

Not a bad showing for a bunch of useless garbage they drafted last year eh ?

And please give that BS about any of us using a tired old cliche about professionals knowing their buisness better than the hobbiests like all of us here . That isn't a cliche it is REALITY ! And the BS about us fawning all over Omar is total BS also . None of us did any such thing . We merely pointed out as you also have that his track record deserves the benefit of the doubt before being lambasted in public .

Like I said it is your perogative to disagree and in the end you might be right . But to make the absolute statements that you are making takes away from your credibility bro !

  6. I post what I feel. I don't believe in being wishy washy. If I'm wrong, I'll gladly stand up and take my lumps, (see Green on NYFS).
