Yeah, I completely spaced on Stinson last night...
Sorry about that.
Jonathan Castillo rebounded from a nightmarish relief outing his last time out, going 2 scoreless innings to pick up the win as Savannah won 2 to 1 in 11 innings.

First hand report on Fernando Martinez
http://www.bigblueinteractive.com/petescorner2/forum_display.cfm?F1_ID=238784
"First off, Fernando is a STUD. OMG. He looks like a major league hitter already. In his first AB, he hit a line double down the LF line. Remember, he's a LH hitter. He absolutely roped the ball the other way. In his 2nd AB, he hit a high chop in the IF that he beat out for a hit. The next 2 times up, he got out, but he hit the ball hard twice in the IF, just right at people. His last AB was impressive. It was in the 9th inning aginst a guy throwing gas (94-95 MPH FB) and he was the final out...but man, he fouled off pitch after pitch before rocketing it to the 2nd baseman. He just looks like a major league hitter. Very relaxed, poised, whatever you wanna call it. Whereas Jose Coronado looked outmatched by the same pitcher. There is just something special about Fernando.
Now, Carpie. Whoa. This kid can RAKE. In the first ining he hit a frozen rope double down the RF line to drive in Fernando and he proceeded to line 2 more ropes to CF and LCF in his next 2 ABs. Great bat speed. Solid hitter. The buddy that came to the game with me was impressed that Fernando and Carpie were only 18 and 20 years old. Carp also had a nice diving play on a ball that seemed destined to be a double just over the bag and down the RF line. He jumped up and beat the runner to the bag."

Marcos Tabata: 3.1 innings of relief, 1 h, 0 r, 3 walks, 9 k's, struck out every batter he got out but one
Maybe he thinks a 21 year old pitcher with merely 1 year of VSL under his belt is not worth mentioning(yet a 26 year old in AA is basically a god, lmao), but when you pitch well in the VSL, and then in your pro debut you strikeout 9 in 3.1 ip, you should be mentioned. Sorry about this folks, shouldn't happen again, we try to to have a huge age bias here at MPH(even though he is only 21), guess Tejesh missed that boat.

Mets Reveal Kingsport and Brooklyn Rosters
TOP DRAFT PICKS REPORT TO BROOKLYN |
June 17, 2007 - The 2007 roster has been announced, and some of the Mets' top picks are among the names playing in Brooklyn. Third round pick, RHP Stephen Clyne, from Clemson University (SC); fifth round pick, INF Zach Lutz, from Alvernia College (PA); seventh round pick, INF Lucas Duda, from the University of Southern California; and eighth round pick, RHP Dan McDonald, from Seton Hall University (NJ) are among the 2007 top ten draft picks who will be playing in Brooklyn this summer. In addition, some familiar faces will be seen at KeySpan park, with six returnees from the 2006 squad -- LHP Josh Appell, LHP Grady Hinchman, RHP Nick Waechter, INF Jake Eigsti, OF Will Vogl, and C Jason Jacobs. And a fan favorite from the 2002 and 2003 team, OF Ender Chavez, has also returned. As you know, the players on the Brooklyn team will change with frequency throughout the season. The New York Mets QUIT today
Willie Randolph now faces the biggest crisis of his young managerial career. He has to stay the bleeding right here, he has to remotivate his team, and he has to lose his cool in a way he's never lost it before. Because his team QUIT on him today. They said to him "we do not care how we play". Willie Randolph - the ball is in your court. Make sure your team knows you will NEVER again stand for the pathetic display of baseball we witnessed today in Dodger Stadium.
This team is at a crossroads, folks. And you are blind if you think this is now going to magically turn around. It's gone too far, too many losses, in horrific brutal fashion, but none of them were worse then tonight. The team quit. Now Willie has to go to work.

Great Jorge Sosa article
Sosa's extreme makeover |
June 13, 2007
|
LOS ANGELES – Jorge Sosa raised his chin and hid the baseball, returned to the minor leagues and tried to start over again.
Chin to the target, Pedro Martinez had told him. Front shoulder in.
Bring the ball back like so, he had told him, so the hitters can't see it.
Believe in it, he'd insisted. Remember when you believed it?
Rick Peterson, the New York Mets pitching coach, approved and tweaked. Mark Brewer, Mets Triple-A pitching coach, monitored and adjusted. Sandy Alomar Jr. and Mike DiFelice, been-around catchers in New Orleans, called for sliders on top of sliders until they were right. Omar Minaya, Mets General Manager, brought Sosa back to the big leagues.
Yeah, sometimes it takes a village to re-raise a pitcher.
"So far," Sosa said in the days leading to his eighth start for the Mets, "I've put together what they told me to do."
He is 6-1 with a 2.64 ERA in seven big-league starts since Orlando Hernandez came down with a sore shoulder and Chan Ho Park bombed and the Mets ran out of alternatives. He was 4-0 with a 1.13 ERA in five starts at triple-A, there because the winter pitching market was typically thin and it hadn't been that long since he was a decent pitcher.
When they hand the baseball to Sosa tonight at Dodger Stadium, he'll take it as a pitcher who has found his way again or as a pitcher who has found it for the moment. While the Mets would prefer the former, they'll take it either way, because at a time when they've won 18 games and lost 16 over five weeks, Sosa, the rescue-and-recovery project, has won a third of them himself. In fact, Sosa is the only Mets pitcher to win a game in June, and he's won twice.
"I don't know what he did when he went to the minors," catcher Ramon Castro said. "I know he's better. He looks like a pitcher."
Castro has caught Sosa's last three starts – at Detroit, vs. Arizona and at Florida – and the Mets have won all three. In them, Sosa has allowed three runs in 20 1/3 innings.
"Nobody expected him to do what he's doing right now," Castro said. "You look at his face. He's more confident. He's like somebody else pitching. His head's in the game."
Sosa is 30 years old. Two seasons ago he was 13-3 for the Atlanta Braves. Had he pitched enough innings to qualify, he would have ranked third in the National League in ERA, behind Roger Clemens and Andy Pettitte and before Dontrelle Willis and Pedro Martinez. As it was, he was 10-2 after June 27 as a regular starter, and was in the Braves' rotation when 2006 opened.
That's when it all went bad. He lost nine of his first 10 decisions and was out of the rotation before the All-Star break, his place taken by rookie left-hander Chuck James. His fastball was unreliable. His slider hung. Hitters almost never missed. The Braves designated Sosa for assignment near the trading deadline, settled for a living, breathing player in return from the St. Louis Cardinals, who then non-tendered him less than five months later. By the end, Sosa had allowed 30 home runs, the 14th-most in baseball, in 118 innings, 116th in baseball.
"It was real difficult for me last year," he said. "However I usually got outs, I suddenly had a hard time getting them. I couldn't locate those pitches.
"I was searching for somebody to sit with me and tell me what I was doing wrong. I'm very happy Omar Minaya and [assistant general manager] Tony Bernazard had confidence in me, that I could be the same pitcher I was in 2005. They gave me the confidence to be myself again."
Leaning on the dugout rail, late-afternoon sun bright off his sunglasses, Bernazard shrugged and said, "We needed protection. That was the main thing."
Now, the Braves and Cardinals would seem to know something about pitching.
And, yet, here stands Sosa, half-dressed in a gray Mets uniform on a day the Braves and the Cardinals rank in the National League's bottom five in starters' ERA.
Nobody saw this coming, other than Sosa, and maybe not even him. But, with an assist from Martinez, the Mets reworked his mechanics and directed his momentum toward home plate rather than across his body. He drew the ball back behind his body, introducing some deception. The hard, biting slider returned. The fastball generally went where he threw it. The changeup mystified left-handers.
Martinez convinced him it could all work again.
"Basically, Pedro told me to have confidence in yourself, because you did it before," Sosa said. "It's not like you haven't."
The last time Sosa pitched at Dodger Stadium, he was on his way to 13 wins, to a place in a rotation of royalty. Two years later, as the Mets wait on Martinez's return and their rotation to be whole again, Sosa is again coming from somewhere else, looking to stay.
"Well," he said slowly, "I believed in myself."

2007 Mets Draft - Signees
The New York Mets announced today that they have signed nine of their 42 draft picks from the 2007 First Year Player Draft, including second round selection righthanded pitcher Scott Moviel from St. Edward High School (OH), and third baseman Richard Lucas, the club’s fourth round selection from Wolfson Senior High School (FL). [MORE AFTER THE BREAK].
New York also signed their 12th round pick righthanded pitcher William Morgan from Lewis-Clark State College (ID), outfielder Christopher Fournier, the 16th round pick from George Mason University (VA), the 20th round selection righthanded pitcher Dylan Owen from Francis Marion University (SC), righthanded pitcher Dillon Gee, the club’s 21st round pick from the University of Texas-Arlington, the 23rd round pick catcher Norberto Navarro from Pasco Hernando Community College (FL), righthanded pitcher Bradley Burns, the 26th round selection from the University of Oklahoma and a 38th round selection outfielder Brandon Kawal from Concordia University (CA).
Burns will be assigned to Kingsport ® of the Appalachian League. Morgan, Fournier, Owen, Gee and Kawal will report to Brooklyn (A) of the New York-Penn League. Moviel, Lucas and Navarro will join the rookie-level Gulf Coast Mets.
Mets sign 2nd round pick Scott Moviel
Mets sign Moviel to contract
Scott Moviel, the 6-10, 245-pound left-handed pitcher who recently graduated from St. Edward, has signed a minor-league contract with the New York Mets.
Moviel, the Mets' second-round pick during Thursday's Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft, will begin his professional career in Port St. Lucie, Fla., with the Mets of the rookie Gulf Coast League.
Chosen 77th overall, Moviel's first game is Tuesday, June 19, when the Mets play at Jupiter, Fla., against the Gulf Coast Marlins.
"We don't know if Scott will pitch that day," said Sue Moviel, Scott's mother.
Scott Moviel signed the contract on Sunday.
"[The Mets'] offer to Scott was pretty much what we were looking for, plus some incentives," said Sue Moviel.

BA Scouting Report:The Andrew Brackman comparisons are obvious. Product of an Ohio high school? Check. Signed to play in college at North Carolina State? Check. Huge body that has scouts dreaming of a monster frontline starter? Check. Unlike Brackman, Moviel doesn't have a basketball scholarship, but he has played the sport in high school. He's an intimidating 6-foot-10 and 245 pounds and athletic for his size. He has a 91-92 mph fastball that tops out at 94, and he has tightened up a curveball that was loopy a year ago. Brackman had similar stuff when he came out of Cincinnati's Moeller High three years ago, though his breaking ball was better. As with any large pitcher, there are concerns as to how well Moviel will repeat his delivery and command his pitches. His mechanics don't have any major flaws, though he could do a better job of staying on top of his pitches. Because his older brothers Paul (in the Devil Rays system) and Greg (in the Mariners organization) went backward in college, Moviel is considered signable, especially if he goes in the top three rounds as expected. Rated 68th Nationally
Player Name: Scott Moviel
Position: Starting Pitcher
School: St. Edward High School, Berea, Ohio School
Birthdate: 05/07/88
Height: 6'10"
Weight: 245 lbs.
Bats: Right
Throws: Right
Comments Fastball: Moviel threw his fastball in the 88-92 mph range and threw it consistently at 90 mph.
Curve: Moviel's curve has the chance to be a good offering, but he gets in front of it a little too much and his mechanics sometime get in the way of consistently delivering the pitch.
Changeup: He showed a changeup, but he didn't throw it much in this outing.
Control: With all that can go wrong with a 6-foot-10 pitcher's delivery, Moviel can struggle with his command when his mechanics go awry.
Poise: Moviel had very good mound presence and stands out there like he wants to win.
Physical Description: Big, imposing right-hander, much like NC State starter Andrew Brackman. Like Brackman, Moviel could be headed to NC State and is a former basketball player, so he's fairly athletic, especially for someone his size. He's very coordinated and has surprising quickness.
Medical Update: Healthy.
Strengths: The body plus the arm strength. At 6-10, Moviel could have the ability to throw a plus, plus fastball to go along with an above-average curve. It's all about projectability.
Weaknesses: He's a project. He struggles with inconsistency and guys his size have to make sure they have everything completely together for everything to work properly. His pitches past his fastball lag behind currently.
Summary: Moviel is a huge 6-foot-10 right-hander who'll be a bit of a project for whichever team takes him. He is fairly athletic and used to play basketball, but as is often the case with pitchers his size, he struggles to repeat his delivery and maintain his mechanics. He does have a solid average fastball, a curve that could become a good pitch with some help and a changeup he doesn't throw much. Finding consistency will be the key to Moviel's success. Some pitchers his size have found it, others have not.
SCOUTING REPORT: The Moviel/Andrew Brackman comparisons are too obvious to repeat but two things stand out. One is that scouts feel that Moviel is more advanced at the same age than the North Carolina State righthander. The second is that Moviel has already given up basketball despite the fact that he was getting serious attention from mid-major Division I programs to play that sport and is not a full-time baseball player. Both of Moviel’s older brothers, Paul (Devil Rays) and Greg (Mariners) are minor league pitchers, which helps with his baseball background. On the mound, Moviel has been very consistent this spring, pitching in the 90-93 mph area virtually every time out and showing good command and feel for a mid 70s breaking ball that has good shape but could use more power and deception. He repeats his delivery very well for a pitch of any size, which is a big positive for the future. Aside from natural worries about extremely big pitchers, there is nothing that Moviel has done this spring to discourage scouts from keeping him moving up the draft ladder.

We'll provide a list of the Met picks in the draft sometime tonight.
Just an addendum to my rant: when I throw out names like Cole St Clair and Matt Harvey and Tanner Robles, they're just examples of the types of picks I would've liked to see, I'm not necessairly saying I wanted those names taken at those slots.
The Mets 20th round selection
That's it for now. The Mets are just filling rosters at this point taking college seniors. I'll come back later with a recap of Day Two. Also, in the next few days, look for info, scouting reports and more on the draftees.
