4.30 Minor League Report! MURPHY, ANTONINI!

New Orleans 7, Tacoma 6

Adam Bostick was ejected 3 batters into the game, but the Zs bullpen stepped up and delievered 9 innings of 3 run relief, and the Zs bats came alive enough to overcome a 3-0 deficit, leading to a 6 pitcher-3 hour 9 minute victory. Tim McNab and Ivan Maldonado combined for 5 shutout innings in relief, but Jose Santiago got the win allowing a run in his 1.1 innings. Carlos Muniz bent but did not break, allowing 2 hits and 2 walks in his 1.2 innings, picking up his 3rd save. In a combined 11.1 innings between AAA and the majors, he's yet to allow a run.

Argenis Reyes and Jesus Feliciano, the top 2 in the order, combined to go 6 for 7 with 2 runs, an RBI and 2 walks. Chris Aguila and Anderson Hernandez also had multi-hit games for the Zs, who are 16-10 on the season. Fernando Tatis (0 for 4, BB, 2 Ks, .226) and Shawn Wooten (0 for 4, run, .152) took 0-fers.

Binghamton 2, New Britain 11

Jon Niese was cruising through 4, having given up 2 hits and 2 walks, but then the 5th inning came, and Niese lasted just 1 out, giving up 2 hits and 4 walks, and 4 runs. Salvador Aguilar saved Niese 2 IHRs, but gave up 3 of his own in his 3.2 innings, and German Marte completed the disasterous game by giving up 4 in his inning of work.

Dan Murphy thought it was 2 weeks ago, as he went 3 for 3 with a walk, but the other 2 members of the Trinity weren't cooperating, Nick Evans took an 0-fer, and Mike Carp had one hit. 3 others besides Evans took 0-fers, Emmanuel Garcia and Fernando Martinez both went 0 for 5, with 1 and 2 Ks, respectively, they're batting .217 and .254. Jose Coronado also took an 0-fer, going 0 for 2 with a walk, and is now batting .261. Coronado is 3 for his last 32 with 10 Ks, and has seen his average plummet from .350, 11 games ago, to .261. The Mets have lost 7 of 8 and are now 10-16.

St. Lucie 7, Daytona 4

All St. Lucie needed was a cleanup hitter. OK, not really, but Ramon Castro was 2 for 2 with a homer in his second rehab game, and St. Lucie's won 3 of 4, and are charging up the standings, they're now 5-21.

A good outing from Tobi "420" Stoner didn't hurt, he only allowed a run over 5 innings, on 7 hits and a walk, while striking out 5. Ryan Coultas gave up 3, 2 earned, in 3.2 innings, and recently demoted Edgar Alfonzo picked up the save.

Ezequiel Carrera had a big day out of the leadoff spot, going 2 for 4 with 2 runs, a double and triple, and walk. Lucas Duda drew 3 walks, and Jamar Hill had 2 XBH (2b and HR), while 3 Mets took 0-fers, Lucas Duda (0 for 2, 3 BBs, .330), Josh Thole (0 for 2, K, .228), and Jason Jacobs (0 for 3, run, 2 BBs, 2 Ks, .314)

Savannah 4, Hickory 2

Michael Antonini was in complete control of the game today, retiring the first 17 batters to face him before allowing a 2 out double in the 6th. That would be the only hit he would allow. The only other blemish on his record was a 2 out walk in the 7th, and Jose Bierd allowed that runner to score, so Antonini was charged with a run. His final line was brilliant, 6.2 ip, h, er, bb, 4 ks. Bierd finished the game, earning his 4th save of the season.

Two of the newest Gnats, Michael Hernandez and Joaquin Rodriguez, had multi hit games, while 4 Gnats took 0-fers, Michael Parker (0 for 3, RBI, .200), Jordan Abruzzo (0 for 4, 2 Ks, .350), Jose Jimenez (0 for 3, .187) and Matt Bouchard (0 for 3, .204).

Greg Veloz (2b) 1 for 4, run, 3b, RBI, .206
Michael Hernandez (rf) 3 for 4, 2 runs, .476
Francisco Pena (c) 1 for 4, 2b, RBI, .250

Jose Bierd 2.1 IP, 3 H, ER, K, HR, 1.64 era

-----------

I found myself curious about Michael Antonini, so I dug into my files and found some info on him from the MPH Draft Database 2007 Edition.

Round 18, Pick 573: Michael Antonini

Michael Antonini (LHP - Georgia College & State University)

Antonini features 5 pitches. A two and four seam fastball, slider, change and curve. He feels his slider is his most dominating breaking pitch. He likes to throw his changeup, but it needs work. His fastball sits between 88 and 92, while his slider is 78-81, and his change is 78-80.

Thanks to Coach Chris Calciano from Georgia College & State University for this scouting report:

Antonini is a winner first and foremost!! Tough kid, very ballsy. Velocity is 87-91, fastball has some life. Cutter is a solid secondary pitch for strikeouts and is 79-81. Has an average curveball which he typically just uses as a first pitch get me over. Has a feel for the change with decent run and sink. Solid strike thrower. Slightly above average pickoff move. Average athleticism and fields his position very well.

Binghamton 1, New Britain 7

Jacob Ruckle didn't have it tonight, but he still went 7 innings, allowing 8 hits and 5 runs (all in the first 2 innings). The offense was shut down by 3 New Britain pitchers, managing just 8 hits and a run. 3 players took 0-fers tonight, Dan Murphy (0 for 4, K, .343), Mike Carp (0 for 4, .361) and Jose Coronado (0 for 3, BB, K, .267), while 2 had multi hit games.

Savannah 6, Hickory 13

Angel Calero was in the unique position of allowing 5 runs in 3.2 innings, but none of them were earned, so he lowered his ERA while taking his 4th loss. He didn't pitch well at all, however, allowing 6 hits (including a homer) and 3 walks in those 3.2 innings. Steven Cheney, demoted from St. Lucie (where he was 0-1, 6.75 in 8 games), didn't fare better in his Gnat debut, surrendering 5 hits and 3 runs (2 earned) over 2.1 innings.

Joaquin Rodriguez and Michael Parker made their Savannah debuts, bolstered what was a weak lineup. 3 players took 0-fers, Greg Veloz (0 for 4, run, RBI, BB, .204, CS (3)), Jordan Abruzzo (0 for 5, .375) and Jose Jimenez (0 for 3, run, 2 BBs, K, .193), while 3 had multi hit games.

4/28 Links + Minor League Report! Duda!

That's right - all in one post. St. Lucie's game is over, they lost 9-5 and are now 4-21 on the season. New Orleans plays tonight @ 10pm

New Orleans 9, Tacoma 15

The Zs fell behind 11-2 after 5, scored 7 unanswered runs, and then watched Nate Field give 4 back in the 8th, short-circuiting any potential 9th inning rallies, dooming the Zs to a loss. Joselo Diaz didn't have it at all today, giving up 6 runs (4 earned) on 5 hits and SIX walks over 2.2 innings. Neither did Jose Santiago who relieved him (5 runs on 9 hits in 1.2 innings). Ivan Maldonado and Tim McNab did a good job of settling the game down long enough for the failed rally, before Field put the game out of reach for good.

The top 2 in the Zs order (AHern and Argenis Reyes) combined to go 1 for 11 with a double, RBI, and 2 Ks, but that's no excuse on a night the team scored 9. Michel Abreu and Chris Aguila had HUGE days, and no one took an 0-fer.

Anderson Hernandez (ss) 1 for 6, 2b, RBI, 2 Ks, .190
Argenis Reyes (2b) 1 for 5, .254
Michel Abreu (1b) 3 for 4, 2 runs, 2b, BB, .277

St. Lucie 5, Palm Beach 9

So much for the 2 game winning streak. Claudio Vargas made his first start for the Mets today, going 5 innings and allowing 2 runs, 1 earned, on 3 hits. Eric Niesen pitched in relief and got blown apart for 7 runs, 5 earned, over 3 innings.

Good news on the injury front, as Ramon Castro played today and went 2 for 3 with a run scored. Lucas Duda, DJ Wabick and Brahiam Maldonado also had multi hit games, while Ezequiel Carrera (0 for 4, BB, K, .248) and Ruben Tejada (0 for 5, 2 Ks, .231, E (9)) combined to go 0 for 9 at the top of the lineup. Also taking 0-fers were Jamar Hill (0 for 4, RBI, K, .111) and JR Voyles (0 for 4, 2 Ks, .200)

Lucas Duda (1b) 2 for 3, 2 runs, 2b, 2 BBs, .337

4/27 Minor League Report!

Sorry about last night - we have Comcast high speed...usually, but from around 7pm on last night - we didn't. I stayed up until a quarter after 3am hoping, but it didn't come back. Luckily, it's back today. Kudos to David for picking me up :) So instead of doing the MLR, I spent the night watching some old Hogan's Heroes on cassette ;)

Song of the Day: DaRude - Oasis (club mix)

New Orleans 2, Round Rock 0 in 4.5 innings (rain)

Ruddy Lugo pitched brilliantly for 5 innings, good enough for a CG today, as the Zs took a rain shortened 2-0 decision from Round Rock. Lugo allowed 4 hits and a walk, while striking out 2 and lowering his ERA to 2.40, and gaining his 3rd win vs 1 loss. The RBI went to Shawn Wooten (2b) and Jesus Feliciano (sac fly). 5 players took 0-fers in the short game - AHern, Anderson Machado, Michel Abreu and Caleb Stewart were all 0 for 2 with a K, and their AVGs are .191, .209, 256, .214 respectively. Feliciano was 0 for 1, lowering his AVG to .302. The Zs are now 14-9

Fernando Tatis (2b) 1 for 2, run, 2b, .225
Chris Aguila (lf) 1 for 1, run, BB, .319
Shawn Wooten (c) 1 for 2, 2b, RBI, .172

Binghamton 0, Portland 3

Interesting lineup today, with Dan Murphy leading off and Fernando! hitting 3rd. Honestly, if they're going to shake things up, I'd rather they not break up the Trinity. My suggestion would be: Garcia/Coronado, Coronado/Garcia, Fernando, Evans, Carp, Murphy.

Anyway, it didn't work, the Mets only managed 5 singles and a double, and Eric Brown had a very tough luck loss, going 6, allowing a run on 7 hits, while walking 1 and striking out 4. Edgar Alfonzo and Eddie Kunz allowed a run each in their inning of work.

3 players took 0-fers, Dan Murphy (0 for 4, .358), Mike Carp (0 for 4, K, .376) and Ambi Concepcion (0 for 3, .233). The Mets are now 10-14.

Jose Coronado (ss) 1 for 4, .276
Fernando Martinez (cf) 1 for 3, BB, K, .260
Nick Evans (1b) 1 for 4, .326
Emmanuel Garcia (2b) 1 for 2, BB, .217
Eric Brown 6 IP, 7 H, ER, BB, 4 Ks, 4.97 era, L (0-2)
Edgar Alfonzo IP, H, ER, K, HR, 5.84 era
Eddie Kunz IP, H, ER, 5.06 era

St. Lucie 6, Palm Beach 4 in 14 innings

Brahiam Maldonado hit a walk off 3 run homer in the bottom of the 14th to save Tim Stronach, who'd given up a run in the top half of the inning. The Mets bullpen, which has been much maligned this season, delivered 9.1 innings of 8 hit, 1 run relief in back of an ineffective Nick Carrwho only lasted 4.2 innings.

Despite the 6 runs put up by the Mets, their offense was held to 8 hits over 13.2 innings, with Maldonado's of course being the biggest of them all. Lucas Duda (0 for 6, .327) and Hector Pellot (0 for 5, 2 Ks, .160) were the unfortunate two who went hitless, but no Met had more then 1 hit. The Mets have won 2 straight, but are still a putrid 4-20.

Ezequiel Carrera (cf) 1 for 6, run, 3b, K, .257
Ruben Tejada (ss) 1 for 6, RBI, .242
Brahiam Maldonado (lf) 1 for 6, run, HR, 4 RBI, K, .205
Nick Carr 4.2 IP, 3 H, 3 ER, 3 BBs, 5 Ks, HR, 5.79 era
Roy Merritt 1.1 IP, 2 Ks, 5.87 era
John Wesley IP, H, 9 era
Stephen Clyne IP, H, BB, K, 11.25 era
Arthur Santos 2.2 IP, 3 H, BB, K, 0.00 era
Tim Stronach 3.1 IP, 3 H, ER, BB, 3 Ks, 6.46 era, W (2-1)
Savannah 4, Rome 2

Savannah led all the way in this one, grabbing a 2-0 lead in the 3rd. Elvin Ramirez was good today, going 5.1 innings, allowing just a run on 4 hits, but walking 3, while striking out 4. Nick Waechter, who was used as a starter last year in Brooklyn, has been pitching exclusively out of the pen so far this season, and he went 2.2 innings, allowing 2 hits and a run. Jose Bierd picked up his 3rd save.

3 Gnats had multi hit games, while 4 had 0-fers. Richard Lucas (0 for 3, BB, K, .200), Jordan Abruzzo (0 for 2, run, 2 BBs, .412), Darren Clark (0 for 4, 2 Ks, .235) and Dan Stegall (0 for 4, run, .184, SB (2). The Gnats are now 8-16.

Greg Veloz (2b) 2 for 4, RBI, K, .213, 2 SB (11)
Matt Bouchard (dh) 2 for 4, RBI, 2 Ks, .186
Michael Hernandez (rf) 2 for 4, run, 2b, .500

4/26 Minor League Report! Duda, Gee, Evans!

I don't know where Tej is tonight, and I just got home so I'll do the MLR. I'm going to do it in box score form, not the normal Tej way.

The New Orleans game was postponed.

Binghamton got worked, 12-1, the only semi bright spot was Evans hitting his 4th HR of the season, other than that it was ugly. Fernando with another golden sombrero, lots of strikeouts up and down the lineup, and Parnell got rocked...again.

St. Lucie actually won a game! Well, their 3rd win. Tejada with 2 more walks tonight, I really love his patience and plate approach. It is amazing how advanced he is for an 18 year old. Duda continues his torrid 2008, I'm hoping Carp continues to rake, forces his way up to AAA and Duda takes his place in AA somewhere around mid season. Gee pitched a very good game, after a disappointing start to the season.

Boy, every year it seems like Savannah has a very weak hitting lineup. 2008 is no different, their offense seems pretty brutal so far this season. Moviel got rocked. Not the start I was hoping from from Moviel or Vineyard this season...
