10/30 Winter League Report + 10/31 Links

Report from Metsblog - Carlos Delgado's option for 2009 was picked up. It's for $12 million, and remember, this doesn't preclude a trade. But (and this is something I NEVER thought I'd say) - for one year, coming off his second half, 12 mil may be a bargain.

Merry Halloween, everyone. Be safe out there when you go Trick or Treating.

Mets Sign Tatis To A One-Year Deal

First off, though this is a "minor league blog", I'm going to attempt to keep you guys updated a bit on the off-season. Of course there are tons of site for this, but it's just another opinion, and something to help the off-season pass.

Anyways, the Mets started the off-season out on a positive note re-signing 2008 comeback player of the year, Fernando Tatis, to a One Year Deal. Tatis, who will turn 34 in January, hit .297/.369./.484 for the Mets last year, despite hitting just .242 in New Orleans prior to his call-up.

Tatis shocked the world last year and I think it says something about his character that he re-signed this quickly to a one year deal. No, we don't know how much money he'll be making yet, but I get the feeling this is Tatis' way of thanking Minaya for giving him a chance when nobody else would.

I'm glad to have Tatis back.. he's the passionate, firey, and not to metion clutch, player that this team needs more of.

Updates on Daniel Murphy and Shawn Bowman

Straight from the horse's mouth (Sorry, Daniel).

On Bowman: Also Shawn just left a few days ago to be with his father who unfortunately is very sick.

Of course, our thoughts and prayers go out to Shawn and his dad.

On himself: Everyday I am getting top of the line coaching and I feel that I am getting more consistent at second base and hope to one day be able to help the mets at that position if they so choose. As of right now I am currently not in the lineup due a forearm injury that took place in the annual Rising Stars game. Hopefully I should be ready for action by the end of this week but as of now I am daily consulting with our trainer Joe Golia who has taken care of me since the injury. But I am looking forward to being back in the lineup and further hone my skills at second base and in the batters box.

Chat Box Topic #1: Utley vs Pedroia

Time for a new feature! From time to time, we end up veering wildly off course (especially during the offsseason/winter, when by definition the function of this blog is basically zero) - and the people who frequent the blog and chat box obviously are hardcore baseball fans, in addition to Met/minor league fans. So sometimes, what I'll do is - when a topic I see and like comes up on the chat box, I'll do some basic research like this, and post it, to facilitate the discussion. Here ya go.

Pedroia 2007 (age 23): .317/.380/.442/.822 (165 for 520, 86 runs, 39 2b, 3b, 8 HR, 50 RBI, 7/8 SBs, 47/42 BB/K), 7 HBP

Pedroia 2008 (age 24): .326/.376/.493/.869 (213 for 653, 118 runs, 54 2b, 2 3b, 17 HR, 83 RBI, 20/21 SBs, 50/52 BB/K), 7 HBP

Utley 2007 (age 28): .332/.410/.566/.976 (176 for 530, 104 runs, 48 2b, 5 3b, 22 HR, 103 RBI, 9/10 SBs, 50/89 BB/K), 25 HBP

Utley 2008 (age 29): .292/.380/.535/.915 (177 for 607, 113 runs, 41 2b, 4 3b, 33 HR, 104 RBI, 14/16 SBs, 64/104 BB/K), 27 HBP

Pedroia 2007 RC: 86+50-8=128
Pedroia 2008 RC: 118+83-17=184

Utley 2007 RC: 104+103-22=185
Utley 2008 RC: 113+104-33=184

Conclusion: If Utley's a superstar, Pedroia's well on his way to becoming one. Their runs created (RS + RBI - HR) were equal in 2008, and Utley plays his home games in a bandbox, and is 5 years older. Pedroia probably is the best 2b in baseball right now, factoring in age/contract.

Kunz Talks About "Struggles"

Well, not really, but he talked about the game in which he gave up 8 ER in .1 innings on his blog, and had this to say:

I have pitched two more innings since then and had a ruff outing with 7 ground ball singles and had a little bit of a struggle from my defense behind me. But the next outing after that i got back right on track and pitched very well.

At the time I pointed out to Tej that there was something to be said about Kunz giving up 7 singles in an inning. To me that showed that Kunz wasn't getting hit very hard, because the manager left him for all those batters, and I got the feeling that he was just getting unlucky, which proved to be true.

I'm not trying to overlook the fact that Kunz has struggled in the AFL, because he has, but if you ask any scout about a question that has to do with a guys number in the AFL, he'll tell you not to take these stats seriously.

Winterball is the time for hitters and pitchers to work on things that need improvement; To throw a pitch in a certain situation that they wouldn't normally throw in a real game, to try and take the ball the other way more, etc..

O, yeah, this is for Tejesh.. A picture of Josh Thole hitting:

  • Wes Hodges grounds out, second baseman Daniel Murphy to first baseman Bill Rhinehart
  • Josh Rodriguez grounds out sharply, pitcher Greg Burke to second baseman Daniel Murphy to first baseman Bill Rhinehart.

Thoughts:
---I know the trade in which the Mets gave up Lindstrom/Owens for Vargas/Bostick was horrible, but I think there may be some hope yet for Mr. Vargas. After having surgery last October to remove a bone spur form his elow, Vargas missed the entire 2008 season due to hip surgery. Finally healthy, he has thrown 12.2 scoreless innings in the AFL. Yes, AFL stats don't mean much, but this was a guy who pre his first MLB call-up, completely dominated the minor leagues, and then posted a 4 ERA in his rookie year. I haven't heard any reports about his velocity, but pre-injury he was in the low 90's which is always a plus for a lefty. I'm not saying he'll be a star or something, but he could be a nice long relief pitcher for the Mets next year..

---And yes, Daniel Murphy can hit, but this fall he has shown he's no butcher at second base, only commiting one error, and I think it would be stupid for the Mets not to give Murphy the 2B job going into next year.

Prospect Focus: Joshua Thole

Splits courtesy www.minorleaguesplits.com

The Mets selected Thole in the 13th round of the 2005 draft, and sent him to the GCL Mets, where he hit .269/.406/.337/.743 (28 for 104, 14 runs, 2 2b, 3b, HR, 12 RBI, 20/11 BB/K) in 35 games, an outstanding 1.8182 BB/K ratio, and a ridiculously low .105 K rate, both incredible numbers for an 18 year old in any setting.

Thole hit .370/.514/.407/.921 vs LHP in 2005 (10 for 27, 2b, 6/2 BB/K), with a 3.000 BB/K ratio and a .074 K rate, and .234/.366/.312/.678 (18 for 77, 2b, 3b, HR, 14/9 BB/K) vs RHP, with a 1.556 BB/K ratio, and a .117 K rate.

In 2006, Thole played in 35 games for Kingsport, getting just 96 ABs, and hitting .240/.306/.313/.619 (23 for 96, 4 2b, HR, 7/24 BB/K), a .2917 BB/K ratio and a .250 K rate, both drastically elevated from the year prior. He hit .167/.286/.208/.494 vs LHP (4 for 24, 2b, 2/6 BB/K) and .264/.313/.347/.660 (19 for 72, 3 2b, HR, 5/18 BB/K) vs RHP. Both sample sizes are too small to draw any meaningful conclusions from.

2007 saw Thole in full season Savannah, where he performed markedly better then Kingsport, hitting .267/.372/.311/.683 (104 for 389, 46 runs, 17 2b, 36 RBI, 61/57 BB/K), once again with excellent ratios, a 1.0701 BB/K ratio, and a .147 K rate.

Thole batted .301/.414/.329/.743 against LHP (22 for 73, 2 2b, 11/9 BB/K), a 1.22 BB/K ratio, and a .123 K rate. Against RHP, he batted .261/.368/.312/.680 (82 for 314, 16 2b, 52/47 BB/K), a 1.107 BB/K ratio and a .150 K rate.

Thole, as many Met prospects have done, has improved drastically across the board after making the jump from the Sally League to the pitcher friendly FSL. Thole finished the 2008 season hitting .300/.382/.427/.808 (104 for 347, 49 runs, 25 2b, 2 3b, 5 HR, 56 RBI, 45/38 BB/K), a great 1.184 BB/K ratio and an equally fantastic .110 K rate (which for much of the season was below .100).

Thole got off to a very rough start, hitting .228/.323/.386/.709 in April, and since that point, he hit .314/.393/.434/.828 (91 for 290, 42 runs, 21 2b, 3b, 4 HR, 46 RBI, 38/30 BB/K)

As has been the case throughout the majority of Thole's minor league career, he hit better against LHP then RHP, but this year, that gap narrowed considerably. He hit .333/.386/.432/.818 (27 for 81, 14 runs, 6 2b, 3b, 8 RBI, 6/8 BB/K) vs LHP, with a 0.750 BB/K ratio, and a K rate of .098, while against RHP, he hit .289/.381/.426/.807 (76 for 263, 35 runs, 19 2b, 3b, 5 HR, 48 RBI, 39/30 BB/K), with a 1.300 BB/K ratio, and a .114 K rate.

Thole played the majority of his first 3 seasons as a 1b (142 of 187 games), but in 2008, he played much more catcher, giving him infinitely more value as a player and a prospect.

THE FUTURE: Thole will undoubtedly be in Binghamton to open the 2009 season (after setting career highs in every offensive category except OBP), as the everyday catcher, and one of the few catching prospects in the upper levels of the farm system. While SAL to FSL is one test, the much bigger test for a prospect is the jump from the FSL to EL, the jump Thole will be making in 2009. Thole is solidly on pace for a prospect, playing the entire season as a 21 year old this year affords him a cushion if he were to falter on his trek through the system.

For more on Josh Thole, visit my good friend Joe DeMayo's website, NYbaseballdigest. http://nybaseballdigest.com/?p=922

PS: Alot of people are sleeping on Thole. I think he's going to breakout onto alot of radars in 2009. You heard it here, first.

Gee Adds To His Arsenal

Over the last couple of days we've been having conversations about Dillion Gee via the chatbox. I continue to stick with that Gee's ceiling is that of a 4th starter, due to no true out pitch, and see him as nothing more.

However, some of you feel he can be more, and I guess it comes from the dominance that he has shown in the minors. But realize, that these numbers are based more on Gee being able to keep these hitters off balance and control his pitches, then his stuff actually being considered good.

And there's nothing wrong with that, but once you get to the major league level you need a true out pitch, and having control of average pitches in the major leagues just means that you're around the plate, which makes it easier for the hitter to lock in on (think Ian Kennedy).

But, here's a good Gee article about the curveball that he developed this year and how it helped his progression.

...But in one season, Gee executed such valuable growth that it has significantly altered his standing among the organizations highest ranking prospects. That promising development can be singularly found in his curveball. He was sharp in his rookie season as he posted a 3-1 record with a 2.47 ERA and a dazzling 56/9 strikeout-to-walk ratio with Brooklyn in 2007, but to compete and win in St. Lucie, he knew adding a fourth pitch was imperative.

Alongside St. Lucie pitching coach Dan Murray, Gee found the feel and rhythm of the pitch. "I hadnt really thrown a curveball my entire life outside of just tinkering with it a little", said Gee. "But down in Florida, Coach Murray really helped me with it, get my finish and the down break on the curveball. I'd have to say Murray was the main contributing factor to the success of the curveball and really where I was headed this year".

The curveball helped establish him in the Florida State League as he posted a 3.82 ERA in the seasons first two months despite a 4-5 record for his struggling club. But the continued use and effectiveness of his curveball helped him peak in June when he posted a 3-0 record and 0.92 ERA. "I think adding my curveball early on in the year gave me that fourth pitch I can throw for a strike and really kept me going throughout the year, he added."

"Throughout the year, I just continued to attack hitters and throw strikes, what I'm always trying to do out there, but learning how to mix my breaking pitches is something I had to really learn.Early on in the season, my slider was not really a pitch I could control as much as a curveball. So when I needed to just throw strikes, I was using my curveball but in an 0-2 count when Id throw something in the dirt Id go to my slider. I really focused on pitch selection in different counts and that got me going."

His first stint is Double-A has also reinforced the confidence he gained while in St. Lucie. "When I got the call, I was really surprised but when I got up there and was working with [B-Mets pitching coach] Ricky Bones, he was preaching pretty much the same thing”stay low and throw strikes and thatâs what I did. Anytime you jump a level and do well, it proves to you that you belong there. What I was able to do to in Binghamton gave me confidence knowing I could succeed against better hitters and it all started with adding depth in St. Lucie, and I feel more confident that ever right now".

4 Mets Make Sickles Top 100 List

NY Baseball Digest posted an article showing John Sickles top 100 prospects. However, I read Sickles blog, minorleagueball, and I have not seen a top 100 list posted by Sickles on the site. I trust NYBD enough to believe that they got it from Sickles, so, lets take a look how Mets prospects ranked in Sickles eyes.

29: Wilmer Flores
31: Fernando Martinez
39: Jonathan Niese
77: Mike Carp

Eh. I'm glad to see that Niese and Carp got some love, but I have to believe that Jon Niese at 39 has something to do with Niese being one of Sickles' favorite prospects.. I think Niese and Carp are rated a little too high, and I think Fernando should be somewhat lower on the list, though I can understand since he's never healthy and hasn't exactly broken out yet.

Tej edit: This is Sickles take on prospects for fantasy baseball, it's from Rotowire.

Read: Kunz Blogging About AFL Experience

http://aflmets.mlblogs.com/

"Now I am down in Arizona again for my second season in the Arizona Fall League. My first year was last year I was on the Scottsdale Scorpians, that was a great experiance for me and helped me move far in the Mets organization. Now back again I am on the Peoria Saguaros for year two. Last year I learned how to control my pitches and get my slider on track! Which worked and got me to start in AA this year and 2 weeks in the Big leagues in August. This year in the Fall Ball I am working on being more consistent with all my pitches and learning that the game is not in a hurry, I am a pitcher and I control the whole game. We started our season two days ago. I pitched in the 9th in the first game, felt really good and got 2 strikeouts and only gave up 1 hit."

I think it's once a week updates.

Prospect Focus: Nick Evans

Splits courtesy www.minorleaguesplits.com

Evans was drafted in the 5th round out of St. Mary's High in Phoenix, in 2004. He signed and went to the Gulf Coast League, where he hit .258/.311/.462 in 50 games. He opened 2005 with Kingsport in the Appalachian League, and hit .344/.382/.734 in 15 games, before being promoted to Brooklyn, where he hit .252/.302/.407/.709 (57 for 226, 30 runs, 11 2b, 3 3b, 6 HR, 33 RBI, 17/34 BB/K) in 57 games, for a 0.50 BB/K ratio, and a very good .150 K rate. Evans hit pretty evenly against both lefties and righties, in terms of average, but performed better in the OBP and SLG departments against LHP. He hit .260/.373/.440/.813 (13 for 50, 5 2b, 2 3b, 9/9 BB/K) against LHP, a 1.00 BB/K ratio, and an equally good .180 K rate. Against RHP, he hit .250/.280/.398/.678 (44 for 176, 6 2b, 3b, 6 HR, 8/25 BB/K), with a 0.32 BB/K ratio, not so good, but with a very good .142 K rate.

Overall in 2005, Nick hit .272/.319/.479/.798 (79 for 290, 41 runs, 18 2b, 3 3b, 12 HR, 55 RBI, 21/51 BB/K), for a .4118 BB/K ratio, and an excellent .176 K rate. Nick hit .269/.355/.493/.848 against LHP (18 for 67, 5 2b, 2 3b, 2 HR, 9/13 BB/K), with a BB/K ratio of 0.6923, and a K rate of .194. Against RHP, he hit .274/.308/.475/.783 (61 for 223, 13 2b, 3b, 10 HR, 12/38 BB/K) with a BB/K ratio of .3158, and a K rate of .170. Extremely good K rates for a 19 year old playing the majority of his games in the pitching friendly confines of Keyspan Park, not to mention against kids 2-3 years older then he was.

2006 saw Nick promoted to full season A ball, in Hagerstown of the Sally League, where he hit .254/.320/.419/.739 (130 for 511, 55 runs, 33 2b, 3 3b, 15 HR, 67 RBI, 45/99 BB/K), for a .4545 BB/K ratio, and a still very good .193 K rate.

His L/R splits were very evenly distributed in 2006, with a .739 OPS against LHP and a .740 against RHP. He hit .254/.307/.432/.739 (30 for 118, 8 2b, 2 3b, 3 HR, 9/20 BB/K), with a 0.45 BB/K ratio, and a .169 K rate. Against RHP, he hit .258/.321/.419/.740 (99 for 384, 24 2b, 3b, 12 HR, 31/77 BB/K), with a .4026 BB/K ratio, and a still very low .201 K rate. Evans started off very slowly in full season ball, hitting just .226 over the first two months (43 for 190), with a woeful 7/46 BB/K ratio, but picked it up tremendously over the 2nd half of the season, hitting .278 from June 1st on (84 for 302, including a .364/.430/.705 clip in June), with a very good 33/51 BB/K ratio.

And now we come to Evans' breakout 2007 campaign in St. Lucie (high A, FSL). Evans hit .286/.374/.476/.850 (108 for 378, 65 runs, 25 2b, 3b, 15 HR, 54 RBI, 53/64 BB/K), setting career highs in virtually every major offensive category (AVG, OBP, SLG, OPS, tying in HR, BBs, and least Ks). Most impressivee about Evans 2007 season was his vastly improved plate discipline. He had a sterling .8281 BB/K ratio, easily the highest of his career, while his K rate of .169 was the second lowest of his career (Brooklyn 05).

Evans obliterated LHP to the tune of .343/.431/.581/1.012 (36 for 105, 13 2b, 4 HR, 17/12 BB/K), a great 1.4167 BB/K ratio, and an equally great .114 K rate. Against RHP, he hit a still very solid .271/.361/.454/.815 (77 for 284, 17 2b, 3b, 11 HR, 38/54 BB/K), for a BB/K ratio of .7037, and a K rate of .190.

Evans began the 2008 season in Binghamton, and he was mashing from the season opener, ending April with a .904 OPS. Evans received a surprise callup in May, and went 3 for 4 with 3 2b in his first major league game, before a deep slump, concluding with him being sent back down, where he mashed in June to the tune of a .999 OPS. Evans played 7 games in July before being recalled for a second time, and is right now the righthanded platoon partner of Daniel Murphy in LF.

Evans hit .311/.365/.561/.926 in AA over 75 games (92 for 296, 52 runs, 18 2b, 7 3b, 14 HR, 53 RBI, 26/64 BB/K), and if he had enough ABs, he would've finished in the top 5 in AVG, SLG and OPS in the Eastern League. Evans did regress slightly in his plate discipline, with a .4063 BB/K ratio in AA, and a .216 K rate. However, when he was getting consistent playing time in the minors, he put up a 17/32 BB/K ratio (.5313 BB/K, .189 K rate), and his BB/K was 1.00 in May (10/10), his K rate was .133.

Evans crushed LHP in AA, hitting an absurd .366/.438/.699/1.137 (34 for 93, 22 runs, 4 2b, 3 3b, 7 HR, 19 RBI, 12/20 BB/K), a 0.600 BB/K ratio, and a .215 K rate. Against RHP, Evans improved significantly, hitting .286/.330/.498/.828 (58 for 203, 30 runs, 14 2b, 4 3b, 7 HR, 34 RBI, 14/44 BB/K), with a .3182 BB/K ratio and a .217 K rate.

THE FUTURE: The future very much is up in the air for Evans, depending on where he fits in with the future plans of the Mets. His surprise call up, and his continued mashing of LHP in the majors (23 for 70, 15 runs, 8 2b, 2 HR, 5 RBI, 6/15 BB/K, .329/.390/.529/.919) could make him a very attractive platoon partner in some sort of OF combination in 2009, but the Mets may want him in Buffalo to become more proficient against RHP (5 for 37, 3 runs, 2 2b, 4 RBI, 1/9 BB/K, .135/.150/.189/.349). Of course, he hasn't exactly been given a prolonged chance to hit RHP in the majors. My best guess would be Evans is either traded, or in Buffalo for the 2009 season.

Prospect Focus: Fernando Martinez

Splits courtesy www.minorleaguesplits.com

Fernando Martinez signed with the Mets during the IFA signing period of 2005 for a $1.4 million signing bonus. He started his pro career all the way in full season A ball, in Hagerstown, where he absolutely ripped it up, hitting .333/.389/.505/.894 (64 for 192, 24 runs, 14 2b, 2 3b, 5 HR, 28 RBI, 15/36 BB/K), for an excellent .4167 BB/K ratio, and a great .188 K rate (remember he was just 17 years old)

Fernando had just 24 ABs against LHP in Hagerstown, hitting a putrid .167/.310/.292/.602 (4 for 24, 3 2b, 4/4 BB/K), a very good 1.00 BB/K ratio, and an equally good .167 K rate. Against RHP, he hit a blistering .353/.404/.532/.936 (55 for 156, 9 2b, 2 3b, 5 HR, 12/29 BB/K), for a .4138 BB/K ratio, and a .186 K rate.

FMart was incredibly consistent in his rookie season, hitting .300+ in every month of the season (although he missed considerable time due to injury, getting just 94 ABs from May 1st to July 31st).

Martinez was sent to St. Lucie in August, finishing off his first year in pro ball at high A, where he hit just .193/.254/.387/.641 (23 for 119, 18 runs, 4 2b, 2 3b, 5 HR, 11 RBI, 6/24 BB/K), for a .2500 BB/K ratio, and a still very good .202 K rate. Martinez, by some metrics, outperformed his Hagerstown numbers (a .194 IsoP in St. Lucie vs a .172 in H-Town, for one). Nando hit .216/.259/.392/.651 vs LHP in St. Lucie (11 for 51, 3 HR, 2/14 BB/K), a .143 BB/K ratio, and an alarming rise to a .275 K rate. However, he controlled the zone better against RHP, as evidenced by his a .3637 BB/K ratio, and a very good .151 K rate. His other numbers, though, were not good, he hit .192/.259/.384/.643 (14 for 73, 4 2b, 2 3b, 2 HR, 4/11 BB/K).

Overall in 2006, Martinez hit .276/.336/.451/.787 (85 for 308, 16 2b, 4 3b, 10 HR, 22/59 BB/K) for a .3729 BB/K ratio, and an excellent .192 K rate. Against LHP, he hit .195/.271/.351/.622 (15 for 77, 3 2b, 3 HR, 6/19 BB/K), a .3157 BB/K ratio, with a corresponding .247 K rate. Versus RHP, he hit .303/.358/.485/.843 (70 for 231, 13 2b, 7 HR, 16/40 BB/K), with a .40 BB/K ratio, and a very good .173 K rate.

Despite posting extremely subpar numbers in St. Lucie (age/level aside), Martinez was promoted to Binghamton for the 2007 season, where he hit .271/.336/.377/.713 (64 for 236, 32 runs, 11 2b, 3b, 4 HR, 21 RBI, 20/51 BB/K), with a .3922 BB/K ratio, and a .216 K rate. HIs numbers improved a good deal versus LHP, he hit .263/.311/.368/.679 in 2007 (15 for 57, 3 2b, HR, 2/16 BB/K), with a very bad .125 BB/K ratio, and an equally bad .280 K rate. However, his improvement vs LHP came along with a vast reduction of his numbers against RHP. Martinez hit just .270/.342/.374/.716 (47 for 174, 7 2b, 3b, 3 HR, 18/33 BB/K), with a .5455 BB/K ratio, and a good .190 K rate.

Thankfully, the Mets let Fernando repeat AA in 2008, and he did put up better numbers across the board, with a .287/.340/.432/.772 line (101 for 352, 48 runs, 19 2b, 4 3b, 8 HR, 43 RBI, 27/73 BB/K, 6/8 SBs), for a .3699 BB/K ratio, and a corresponding .207 K rate. However, his IsoD was down from 65 in 2007 to 53 in 2008, but his IsoP (isolated power, SLG-AVG, or ((TB-1b)/ABs) did increase sharply from 106 in 2007 to 145 in 2008.

Fernando struggled mightily against LHP, hitting just .217/.298/.368/.665 (23 for 106, 15 runs, 5 2b, 3b, 3 HR, 18 RBI, 12/31 BB/K), with a .3871 BB/K ratio and a very very alarming .292 K rate. Against RHP, Fernando did much better, hitting .317/.360/.459/.819 (78 for 246, 33 runs, 14 2b, 3 3b, 5 HR, 25 RBI, 15/42 BB/K), with a .3571 BB/K ratio and a .171 K rate.

THE FUTURE: Martinez should open 2008 in Buffalo (the Mets new AAA affiliate), hopefully playing a corner OF position since he won't be playing CF in the majors. Fernando, as we saw in ST, can stay in on lefties, but the numbers speak for themselves, and he must improve that .665 OPS vs LHP, lest he be labelled as a future platoon player. And keep in mind, Fernando will only be 20 as he begins AAA, he can safely repeat the level twice, and still be on pace to make his MLB debut at age 22 in 2011 (but we'll say he makes it up at some point in 2009)

Instructional League Updates

We break up Tejesh's incredibly unrealistic off-season plan to give you some real minor league news, coming from the instructional leagues currently underway. These little tidbits are from the latest scout.com article, I'll try to keep from plagiarizing 100%, how about 85%?

Jenrry Mejia (RHP, Brooklyn): Meja really caught my eye after reading from Baseball America that this guy, as he develops, may be able to reach 100 MPH on the radar guns. Well, as of now, at age 18, he's sitting 92-96 MPH with his three quarters delivery, with gives him good sink on his ball, and has shown rapid improvement in his power curveball thus far. As for his third pitch, his changeup, according to this report it's taking on split-finger type life, which is a pretty good sign.

Brad Holt (RHP, Brooklyn): Not much neew information on the Holt front, reports maintain his velocity at the 93-96 MPH range, but this report says that he's getting more sink on it, which again, is a good sign.. Also, as Toby Hyde has said for the past three months, Holt doesn't throw a curveball, it's a slider, which has 10-4 movement. Also, his changeup is slowly coming along with good downward action.

~Holt is a guy you need to watch develop. The development of these two pitches will basically determine if his faith will be as a starter or a reliever.

Cesar Puello (OF, GCL): After putting up very solid numbers in his pro-debut in 2008, Puello has shown a good pull swing, along with the ability to inside-out a ball, taking it the other way. As for his defense.. Good things.. Good footwork, good range, strong arm. Keep an eye on him, Savannah 09?

Ike Davis (1B, Brooklyn): Davis has continued his late season progression in the instructional league and has shown good ability to put the barrell on the ball, especially on fastballs/curveballs on pitches down and in. Again, scouts say he needs to let his swing travel freely and not force his swing, almost jumping at the ball. Defensiveley, he's got good hand/eye cordination, and a strong arm, that can also profile in the outfield.

PS: If you're curious (I was), the AFL Season opener is Tuesday, October 7, 2008. Charlie did a writeup of our guys just below this post.

And oh yes - expect to see the MLRs (such as they are) continuing on the next day system (since Hawaii's so far behind timezone wise). Also, I'm working on the System Audit, that should be up on 2/1/09 (very prelim date). AND - I'll be posting my plan here sometime next week, as well as the leaderboards for the NYPL, APP, and GCL. And oh yeah - few more Prospect Focii. So much for this place going semi-dark, lol.

Don't forget you have many ways to contact us and complain (I assure you, any complaints you may have are the fault of David and Charlie ;) - or tell us how good we're doing (that's all me), or just ask us a question in the Mailbag. You can of course comment any posts, or use the chat box, or you can also email us at metsprospecthub@yahoo.com. Thanks again for making the 2008 regular season the best one we've had here, looking forward to a fun winter, and an even better 09 season!

Taking A Look At The AFL Roster

The Mets will be sending 7 (or so) players to the Arizona Fall League this year to help improve on their individual weaknesses. The AFL is probably something close to AA as far as competition goes.

The big guys to look out for the Mets are Daniel Murphy (learning 2B), Eddie Kunz (working on slider), and Bobby Parnell (working on changeup). It is possible that all three of these guys could find a spot on the Mets 25 man roster out of spring training, but more likely that they'll all end up there at some point in the season.

Here's a recap of Scout.com's breakdown of the Mets players heading to the AFL, with emphasis on the guys who should have an impact on next season (+ Josh Thole).

Daniel Murphy:
After making significant contributions to the big league club in the latter half of the summer, Murphy will be more closely watched than any of this group sent to Arizona. Murphy, who spent all of his time with the Mets in left field, will see a lot of time at second base as the organization hopes to have him as an option there for 2009. He spent minimal time at second base this summer and while he was quick on his feet and sharp turning double plays, range is a concern though his defense is cleaner there than on the hot corner. The slight time difference to react to the ball may allow Murphy to play improved defense as he learns the position, and that is something the club is banking on.

Eddie Kunz: The second-year reliever returns to the Arizona Fall League following last winters performance in which he posted a 10.13 ERA in 10 2/3 innings pitched /[9 games]/, striking out eleven. Now stronger heading into the AFL than he was in 2007, consistency will important for Kunz. However, more important will be the further development of his slider and changeup. Both pitches were stronger down the stretch, but not to the point where they gave Kunz steady options off his sinking fastball. The former Binghamton closer will likely have the opportunity to be a significant contributor in the big league bullpen and the steps he takes in AFL will go a long way to filling those chances. His six games in New Orleans in August were the last competitive innings he threw this year, and not doubt Kunz is hungry to return to the mound

Bobby Parnell: Like Kunz, Parnell was promoted to the big league club but as a September call up. And like Kunz, Parnell who got in five big league innings in six games figures to be up for a role in the Mets bullpen in 2009. His fastball/slider combination makes him a very favorable arm to have as both pitches have a lot of movement down in the strike zone. The development of his changeup will play a role in his work while in Arizona, but at least mild gains with the pitch will give him a leg up when competing for a role next spring. This is Parnell first trip to the Arizona Fall League

Josh Thole: The St. Lucie catcher saw a surge in offense this past season. His five home runs were four more than he hit over the last two combined seasons, but more importantly was the growth of his contact stroke. Thole is much more adept to taking pitches the other way and maintaining a consistent strike zone. Those traits helped him .300 for the first time in his career and become a Florida State League All-Star. There is room to grow for him behind the plate, and his arm strength is a concern, but Thole has not hit all that much prior to the 2008 season. Therefore, continuing his swing and plate awareness is key as he faces the most experienced pitching of his career.

Also joining these guys in the AFL Jason Vargas, Shawn Bowman, and Tobi Stoner.
