Time for a new feature! From time to time, we end up veering wildly off course (especially during the offsseason/winter, when by definition the function of this blog is basically zero) - and the people who frequent the blog and chat box obviously are hardcore baseball fans, in addition to Met/minor league fans. So sometimes, what I'll do is - when a topic I see and like comes up on the chat box, I'll do some basic research like this, and post it, to facilitate the discussion. Here ya go.
Pedroia 2007 (age 23): .317/.380/.442/.822 (165 for 520, 86 runs, 39 2b, 3b, 8 HR, 50 RBI, 7/8 SBs, 47/42 BB/K), 7 HBP
Pedroia 2008 (age 24): .326/.376/.493/.869 (213 for 653, 118 runs, 54 2b, 2 3b, 17 HR, 83 RBI, 20/21 SBs, 50/52 BB/K), 7 HBP
Utley 2007 (age 28): .332/.410/.566/.976 (176 for 530, 104 runs, 48 2b, 5 3b, 22 HR, 103 RBI, 9/10 SBs, 50/89 BB/K), 25 HBP
Utley 2008 (age 29): .292/.380/.535/.915 (177 for 607, 113 runs, 41 2b, 4 3b, 33 HR, 104 RBI, 14/16 SBs, 64/104 BB/K), 27 HBP
Pedroia 2007 RC: 86+50-8=128
Pedroia 2008 RC: 118+83-17=184
Utley 2007 RC: 104+103-22=185
Utley 2008 RC: 113+104-33=184
Conclusion: If Utley's a superstar, Pedroia's well on his way to becoming one. Their runs created (RS + RBI - HR) were equal in 2008, and Utley plays his home games in a bandbox, and is 5 years older. Pedroia probably is the best 2b in baseball right now, factoring in age/contract.
