Um...wow. There are very few words left to describe exactly how many cans of whoop ass the Mets are opening up lately. Over their last 16 games, they've scored 114 runs (7.13 RPG), and are 11-5 over that span. Tonight they overwhelmed the Cardinals for 22 hits and 2 walks, while going a stupidly insane 10 for 23 (.435) with RISP, and leaving 9 men on base. Every regular except Richard Pena had a multi hit game, the top 5 in the order had multi RBI games, and 5 players were on base 3 or more times (not counting reaching on errors). Kirk Nieuwenhuis (4) led the multi hit parade. Nieuwenhuis is now batting 2.000 over the last 13 games.

Tim Stronach started and was awful, giving up 6 runs (5 earned) over 5.1 innings, but with the ridiculously insane offense, he picked up his 3rd win.

Eric Beaulac had his offspeed stuff working tonight (courtesy Mike Newman's tweetage), striking out 11 over 6 innings, but he took a ND, allowing 2 runs on 8 hits in 6 innings. Phillips Orta walked 3 and allowed 2 runs (both IHR John Church failed to strand), to take his 3rd loss in Savannah.

The Gnats offense had 10 hits and drew 6 walks, but went just 1 for 9 (.111) with RISP, while leaving 12 on base. Wilmer Flores (2), Nick Giarraputo (2), and Mike Moras (2) had multi hit games, while Josh Satin (0 for 3, 2 BBs, K, .283), and Evan LeBlanc (0 for 3, run, .176) took 0-fers.

APPY R: Kingsport 0/6/0 (first time being shutout all season), Elizabethon 5/10/0

The high powered Kingsport offense was totally stifled tonight, with Tom Stuifbergen and two Twins relievers combining on a 6 hit shutout. The Mets did not have an AB with RISP all game (another first - for the entire system), and left 4 on. Alonzo Harris (2) had the lone multi hit game, while Darrell Ceciliani (0 for 2, .234), Kurt Steinhauer (0 for 2, K, .339, replaced Ceciliani in CF), RJ Harris (0 for 4, 3 Ks, .294), Jeff Flagg (0 for 4, 3 Ks, .297), and John Semel (0 for 3, K, .212) took 0-fers.

Eduardo Aldama took the loss, his first, despite pitching decently (not terribly, at the vert least), giving up 3 runs on 7 hits in 5.2 innings. Julio Bello and Tim Chism allowed a run each in their outings.

Jenrry Mejia had a very rough outing tonight, giving up 4 runs on 5 hits and 3 walks in just 3.2 innings, but a Shawn Bowman 3 run HR in the 8th got him off the hook. Edgar Alfonzo gave up a run in the top of the 9th (Julio De La Cruz allowed an IHR to score), to take his 5th loss of the season.

The Mets offense had 8 hits and 3 walks, while going 2 for 6 with RISP and leaving 4 on base. Jose Coronado and Shawn Bowman hit HRs, while Ruben Tejada (2)had the only multi hit game, and Caleb Stewart (0 for 3, run, BB, 2 Ks, .224) and Rafael Arroyo (0 for 3, K, .000) took 0-fers.

Armando Rodriguez' A debut was stellar, until he ran into 6th inning control issues, issuing 3 walks in the inning. Only one run scored against him, though (an IHR Rhiner Cruz allowed to score), and he earned his first win. Rodriguez allowed just a hit and that one run over 5.2 innings, with 9 Ks.

The Gnats offense had 11 hits and 3 walks, while going 4 for 11 (.364) with RISP and leaving 7 on base. Raul Reyes (2), Nick Giarraputo (2), Mike Moras (2), and Joey August (2) had multi hit games, while Josh Satin (0 for 3, BB, 2 Ks, .285) and Evan LeBlanc (0 for 2, RBI, K, .181) took 0-fers.

Chris Hilliard's Brooklyn debut was a success, he allowed an UER on 5 hits and 2 walks in 6 innings for the win. Michael Powers allowed a run in the 9th, but escaped with his 16th save (boy, he's dicey, huh?).

The Conies offense garnered 9 hits and 5 walks, while going 3 for 13 (.231) with RISP and leaving 10 on base. Jordany Valdespin (2) and Luis Rivera (2) had multi hit games, while Robbie Shields (0 for 4, BB, K, .171), and Ralph Henriquez (0 for 4, .241) took 0-fers.

APPY R: Kingsport 9/12/1, Elizabethon 10/15/2

Haven't had one of these games in a while. The KMets bullpen imploded in the 7th inning, with Tim Chism and Sam Taveras combining to give up 6 runs in the inning, turning a 7-4 lead into a 10-7 deficit. Single runs in the 8th and 9th brought Kingsport within 1, but they fell short in their comeback attempt. Angel Cuan started and was not good, giving up 4 runs on 7 hits in 5 innings, but he was in line for the win before the 7th inning implosion.

The Mets had 12 hits and a pair of walks, while going 2 for 7 (.286) with RISP and leaving 3 on base. Alonzo Harris (2), Cesar Puello (2), Juan Torres (2) and Luis Nieves (2) had multi hit games, while Joe Bonfe (0 for 3, run, BB, K, .319) took the only 0-fer.

2. I'll be posting my post-8/17 top 50ish (might be 55, lol) prospect list around 9/1, the "August" hotsheet, including the final handful of games in September, should be up sometime around midmonth, and then we turn off the lights and go home for around 3 weeks until the AFL season starts, although I might do my series of Prospect Focii with 2009 splits thrown in, and debut some new names for that series...

Michael Antonini had his best outing in a long long time (if not the whole season), allowing just 2 runs on 7 hits in 7 innings for his 7th win. Jose De La Torre picked up his first save of the season, after Ike Davis, returning from a few games off with sore ribs, homered in the 7th to give the Mets a 3-2 lead.

The Mets had just 5 hits and a walk on the game, and were 0 for 2 with RISP, but won anyway. Kirk Nieuwenhuis took an 0-fer. On with the recap?

The Mets were cooled off by the rain out, and then iced on by the Miracle in the opener of a twinight doubleheader, managing just 3 singles, and 1 run, after scoring 104 runs in their previous 14 games. Angel Calero allowed 3 runs (2 earned) over 5 innings, a decent enough outing, but fell to 3-10 on the year. The Mets were 0 for 5 with RISP and left 6 on base.

Chris Schwinden's high A debut was not a good one, he surrendered 3 runs on 6 hits and 2 walks in just 4.1 innings, but his offense was doing their job tonight, so he got off with a ND. Edgar Ramirez picked up his 3rd win, allowing a run on 3 hits in 2.2 innings.

The Mets offense, as I mentioned, did their job, with 9 hits and 4 walks in the nightcap, despite going just 2 for 12 (.167) with RISP, and leaving 9 on base. Stefan Welch and Brahiam Maldonado had homers tonight, going back to back as part of a 4 run 3rd inning. Kirk Nieuwenhuis (2) had the only multi hit game, while Hector Pellot (0 for 3, BB, 2 Ks, .267) took the only 0-fer.

SAL A: Savannah 4/13/1, Augusta 3/6/1 in 11 innings

Wilmer Flores' walkoff RBI single in the 11th inning salvaged what was otherwise a forgetful day for the recently turned 18 year old shortstop, it was his first hit in 6 ABs. Jefry Marte left the game after making an awkward slide into home, no word on why (the way 2009 has gone...:whistles: (which I cannot actually do)). Jose Jimenez replaced him and went 0 for 4, BB, 2 Ks, .155. Eric Campbell (0 for 3, run, 2 BBs, K, .245) took the other 0-fer, while Sean Ratliff (4), Raul Reyes (2), and Mike Moras (A debut; 2) had multi hit games. The Gnats had 13 hits and drew 5 walks while going 6 for 16 (.375) with RISP, but left 13 on base.

Robert Carson had a good outing tonight, giving up just a run on 4 hits in 5 innings. John Church picked up the win with 2 scoreless innings, despite walking a pair in the 11th.

The Mets came from 3-1 down to tie it in the 9th, only to see Travis Babin give up a pair in the bottom of the 10th inning, giving him his first loss, and the Mets their 32nd. Zach Von Tersch had a good start, giving up a run on 4 hits in 6 innings, but it was for naught.

The Mets offense had 12 hits and drew a pair of walks, while going 3 for 10 with RISP, and leaving 10 on base. Ryan Mollica (0 for 5, 2 Ks, .269) took the only 0-fer, while Joe Bonfe (2), and Kurt Steinhauer (4) had multi hit games.

Collin McHugh had another strong outing tonight, scattering 3 hits and 2 walks over 6 innings while allowing a run, to pick up his 8th win of the season. Michael Powers rebounded off a nightmare outing yesterday to pick up his 15th save with a scoreless 9th inning.

The Conies offense had 8 hits and a walk in the game, but were 0-fer (0 for 8) with RISP and left 5 on base. Jordany Valdespin (2) had the lone multi hit game for the Cyclones, while Sam Honeck (0 for 2, RBI (22), BB, K, .256), and Robbie Shields (0 for 3, .174) took 0-fers. Well, St. Lucie had their game rained out, so the offense flowed north to Connecticut, where the Kingsport Mets hammered out 13 hits and drew 6 walks while going 8 for 20 with RISP, and leaving 8 on base. Darrell Ceciliani (2), Jeff Flagg (3), RJ Harris (2), and Cesar Puello (3) had multi hit games, while Alonzo Harris (0 for 5, run, BB, 2 Ks, .265), Joe Bonfe (0 for 5, run, K, .323) took 0-fers. Pedro Zapata was removed from the game after 1 AB, no reason given.

Jhonathan Torres, sadly, was knocked out of the box after 3 innings, having given up 5 in the first, he did settle in and not allow any further damage, but he did not pick up the win. Zach Rosenbaum did with 2 perfect innings of relief, and Guillaume LeDuc had his best outing of the season, finishing off the game with 4 shutout innings for his 1st save.

Thanks to Coach Joe Schaefer

Kurt is a strong and athletic kid. He has above average speed (6.8 60 yd) and is a tremendous OF. He won a Rawling Gold Glove in CF this year at the NAIA level and was also awarded the Charlie Hustle Award at the NAIA World Series. He covers a lot of ground the OF. He has average arm strength but good accuracy. At the plate Kurt has plus power. He drives the ball the other way well. Hits the ball up in the zone best and is susceptible to breaking balls down in the zone. He projects to be a similar player as Tori Hunter.

Dylan Owen had another rough outing tonight, giving up 5 runs (4 earned), on 8 hits and 2 walks in 6 innings, but the Mets offense kept pace, until Edgar Alfonzo gave up a 4 spot in the 7th, though only 2 were earned (due to his own error).

The Mets offense had 10 hits and drew 6 walks, while going a pathetic 2 for 16 (.125) with RISP, and leaving 10 on base. Ruben Tejada (0 for 4, RBI (39), BB, .282) and Josh Thole (0 for 5, RBI (45), .328) took 0-fers, while Jose Coronado, Shawn Bowman, Caleb Stewart and DJ Wabick all had multi hit games.

FSL A+: St. Lucie 12/12/2, Fort Myers 2/9/3

Kirk Nieuwenhuis is just absolutely en fuego right now atop the Mets lineup, and the rest of them aren't doing so bad, either. The Mets have now scored 92 runs in their last 13 games, going 9-4 over that span. Nieuwenhuis had the only multi hit game tonight, but it was a doozy, with 3 more XBH, including his league leading 16th homer, and 31st, and 32nd double. Nieuwenhuis now has his batting average up to .270, roughly 3 weeks ago, it stood in the mid .240s, he has done some monumental heavy lifting in the last month. The Mets hammered out 12 hits, while also walking 9 times, and were 7 for 18 (.389) with RISP, while leaving 10 on base.

Scott Moviel was the beneficiary of the outburst tonight, he had a so so outing, with just 4 hits allowed over 5 innings, though he walked 4, he also struck out 8. Josh Stinson bounced back off a dreadful outing, working the final 2 innings for his 4th save (Mets put up 7 in the 9th).

Brad Burns got a spot start tonight and was extremely ineffective, giving up 4 runs (2 earned, Jefry Marte's 49th error) on 4 hits and 2 walks in 3 innings for his 2nd loss. Sam Martinez and John Church finished out the game.

The Gnats offense had 8 hits and 2 walks, while going 1 for 4 with RISP and leaving 5 on base. Wilmer Flores, Eric Campbell (0 for 2, 2 BBs, .251), and Joey August 0 for 4, K, .212) took 0-fers, while Jefry Marte and Raul Reyes had multi hit games.

NYPL A-: Brooklyn 6/7/0, Vermont 7/8/2

Michael Powers had an incredly rough outing tonight, giving up 4 hits and a walk, along with 4 runs, turning a 6-3 Cyclones lead into a 7-6 Lake Monster victory. Darin Gorski started the game and was decent, giving up 3 runs on 3 hits and a walk in 6 innings, and was in line for the win, before Powers implosion.

The Cyclones certainly did their fare share of hitting (and walking) with 7 hits and 7 walks, while going just 2 for 11 (.182) with RISP and leaving 8 on base. Richard Lucas and Luis Rivera had multi hit games, while Sam Honeck (0 for 4, BB, K, .259), Scott Grimes (0 for 2, RBI, 2 BBs, 2 Ks, .190), Dock Doyle (0 for 2, run, 2 BBs, K, .243), and John Servidio (0 for 3, K, .188) all took 0-fers.

APPY R: Kingsport 3/5/1, Bristol 4/6/8 (EIGHT!)

Yohan Almonte had his second best Appy League outing of the season, allowing just 3 hits and 2 runs in 6 innings, while striking out 8, but it was all for naught after Julio Bello blew the save by allowing a run in the 7th inning. Jonathan White then completed the disaster by allowing a run in the 8th to lose the game.

The Mets had 5 hits, along with 8 Bristol errors, but they went just 1 for 8 (.125) with RISP and left 7 on base. Pedro Zapata (2) had the only multi hit game, while Darrell Ceciliani (0 for 3, K, .234, SB (13)), Jeff Flagg (0 for 4, 2 Ks, .294), Cesar Puello (0 for 4, K, .266, CS (3)), Juan Torres (0 for 4, .326) and Luis Nieves (0 for 3, RBI (6), K, .273, E (5)) all took 0-fers.

3. OF Raul Reyes 12/30/86 L/L Savannah

At the age of 22, Raul Reyes has been a big disappointment for fans of the farm system, struggling to a) play everyday and b) actually hit when he does play. He posted a .930 OPS in July, so here's hoping he uses that as a springboard to a hot August and a good 2010. He's at the upper end of age/level, by the way.

Before July: .245/.320/.337/.658, 40 for 163, 15 runs, 5 2b, 2 3b, 2 HR, 18 RBI, 18/43 BB/K, 1/3 SBs

6. 1B Ike Davis 3/22/87 L/L Binghamton

After a rough April, Ike's been nothing short of phenominal in 2009, torching the FSL and earning a promotion to Binghamton, where he has not stopped hitting, and has actually displayed greater power in the higher league. Davis has rocketted up prospect lists all year (people were naturally worried about his Brooklyn performance, and then his subpar April) - with Ike now pretty much a consensus top 5 prospect in the system. While the numbers against LHP are a concern, he has been steadily improving in that area since his promotion. I would hope the Mets act conservatively with Davis, starting him back in Binghamton for 2010, but they likely will not.

Before July: .293/.390/.482/.872, 73 for 249, 29 runs, 20 2b, 3 3b, 7 HR, 34 RBI, 39/61 BB/K

July: .297/.361/.568/.928, 33 for 111, 18 runs, 6 2b, 8 HR, 22 RBI, 11/32 BB/K

Season: .294/.381/.508/.889, 106 for 360, 47 runs, 26 2b, 3 3b, 15 HR, 56 RBI, 50/93 BB/K

7. 1B/OF Lucas Duda 2/3/86 L/R Binghamton

Duda's been enjoying a somewhat resurgent season in Binghamton this year, coming off a disappointing .263/.358/.388/.755 line in St. Lucie (with a 66/129 BB/K ratio). He's been controlling the strike zone much better, though he hasn't yet displayed the power many had hoped he would (especially with him being a huge man, at 6'4/225). Since Ike Davis' promotion, he's mostly played left field, which may end up being his permanent home. Like Davis, and pretty much every lefty hitter in the system, Duda needs to hit better against lefty pitching, his OPS is hovering around .500 versus southpaws.

Before July: .265/.374/.381/.755, 69 for 260, 33 runs, 16 2b, 3b, 4 HR, 34 RBI, 44/66 BB/K

July: .307/.369/.535/.904, 31 for 101, 12 runs, 8 2b, 5 HR, 16 RBI, 10/20 BB/K

Season: .277/.373/.424/.796, 100 for 361, 45 runs, 24 2b, 3b, 9 HR, 50 RBI, 54/86 BB/K

8. 3b Zach Lutz 6/3/86 R/R St. Lucie

The hitting talent's always been there, the health never has. That's been Zach Lutz' only downfall in his pro career, at least until 2009 (knock on wood). Lutz, after a start/stop first half, has been playing virtually everyday in the second half, and absolutely torching the FSL (to the tune of a .939 post ASB OPS, as of 8/19). Lutz will be 23 1/2 next year entering the EL, a bit on the high side for age/level, but injuries give him a pass in my book, besides, the bat is legit.

Before July: .263/.373/.397/.769, 47 for 179, 22 runs, 8 2b, 2 3b, 4 HR, 27 RBI, 29/39 BB/K

July: .338/.416/.529/.945, 23 for 68, 10 runs, 4 2b, 3 HR, 14 RBI, 6/11 BB/K

Season: .283/.384/.433/.817, 70 for 247, 32 runs, 12 2b, 2 3b, 7 HR, 41 RBI, 35/50 BB/K

9. 3b Richard Lucas 11/2/88 R/R GCL/Kingsport

Lucas was out with an injury for the first half of the season, but in the 15 games since his return, he's trying to make up for lost time, and show some justification for the Mets selecting him in the 4th round of the 2007 draft. He's still just 20, and will likely open his age 21 season in Savannah, which would be age appropriate.

July: .389/.493/.722/1.215, 21 for 54, 14 runs, 10 2b, 3b, 2 HR, 12 RBI, 11/14 BB/K

10. Stefan Welch 8/12/88 L/R Savannah/St. Lucie

Welch played very sporadically in Savannah before an unexpected (and pretty dumb at the time) promotion to the FSL, where he proceeded to go nuclear, ripping the league up for the whole month. Welch is 21, and will likely begin the 2010 season back in Florida, but probably manning the other infield corner, with Sam Honeck likely to be the first baseman.

Before July: .234/.280/.338/.618, 18 for 77, 6 runs, 2 2b, 2 HR, 10 RBI, 4/15 BB/K

July: .327/.381/.481/.861, 34 for 104, 16 runs, 6 2b, 2 3b, 2 HR, 18 RBI, 9/16 BB/K

Season: .287/.338/.420/.758, 52 for 181, 22 runs, 8 2b, 2 3b, 4 HR, 28 RBI, 13/31 BB/K

11. 2b Alonzo Harris 11/16/89 (1/16/89?) R/R Kingsport

Before July: .300/.323/.433/.756, 9 for 30, 2 runs, 2 2b, 3b, 5 RBI, 1/11 BB/K, SB

July: .306/.386/.541/.906, 34 for 111, 25 runs, 2b, 2 3b, 7 HR, 19 RBI, 10/24 BB/K, 8/10 SBs

Season: .305/.357/.518/.875, 43 for 141, 27 runs, 3 2b, 3 3b, 7 HR, 24 RBI, 11/35 BB/K, 9/11 SBs

12. LHSP Jon Niese 10/27/86 L/L Buffalo/New York

Niese actually turned his season around in June, but kicked it into a whole nother gear in July, earning himself a promotion back to New York with a 0.41 era in 3 Buffalo starts. Unfortunately, Niese succumbed to the rash of injuries permeating the big club, suffering a horrible looking complete tear of his hamstring in August.
