The Mets scored 2 in the first, and tacked on runs in the 3rd, 6th and 9th, to win for just the 12th time this year, 5-1. Dillon Gee was the catalyst tonight, matching his season long for an outing, 7 innings, allowing just 4 hits and a run, to pick up his 3rd win of the year. Emary Frederick worked the final 2 innings for his first save.

Ruben Tejada was on base 2 times, the 4rd time in his last 5 games he's done that (4 for 18, 3 BBs, reached via error), and scored his 4th run in his last 5 games. Josh Thole and Bradley Hubbert had multi hit games, while Pornstache (0 for 3, RBI, BB, .357) and Robinson Cancel (0 for 3, run, BB, .143) took 0-fers.

Savannah 3, Augusta 2 in 11 innings

Greg Veloz has been otherworldly in the last week, racking up multi hit games like they're going out of style. He's had at least 2 hits in 6 of his last 8 games, hitting a scorching .405 during that span (15 for 37) with 5 2b, 3b, 11 RBI (.595 SLG). Jose Jimenez out of the 4 hole has also been raking, he's hitting .357 over his last 11 games (he had 3 hits today). Veloz and Jimenez both had multi hit games today to lead the Gnats offense, while Jacob Elgsti (0 for 4, 2 Ks, .227) took the only 0-fer.

Elvin Ramirez started and was magnificant again, only allowing 2 hits and a run over 7 terrific innings, but he took a ND, due to an UER given up by Steven Cheney in the 8th. Edgar Ramirez worked a scoreless 11th to pick up his 3rd win.

Elvin's alternated good start, bad start in May (except for his last 2, which have been great (13.2 ip, 8 h, er, 4/9 bb/k, .68 era)), but his good have been really good, so his overall May numbers are good, a 3-2 record with a 2.36 era, 6 GS, 34.1 IP, 29 H, 12 R, 9 ER, HR, 12/26 BB/K, 2.80 GO/FO, .225 BAA, 1.19 WHIP

5/29 Minor League Report! R Pena!

Tonight's Song: Matchbox 20 - Back 2 Good

New Orleans 2, Round Rock 3, Game 1

Willie Collazo was decent in his 4th start of the season, giving up 3 runs on 6 hits in 6 innings, but the Zs offense was held to 2 runs and 8 hits, so he was tagged with his 2nd loss of the season.

The Zs offense came from a 2 run homer off the bat of who else, Valentino (he's not by a crystal blue Italian stream) Pascucci. Victor Mendez (0 for 3, K, .242) took the only 0-fer of the regulars, while Michel Abreu had the only multi-hit game.

Argenis Reyes (2b) 1 for 4, .262
Anderson Hernandez (ss) 1 for 4, K, .191
Jesus Feliciano (cf) 1 for 2, run, BB, K, .317
Valentino Pascucci (rf) 1 for 2, run, HR, 2 RBI, BB, .283
Michel Abreu (1b) 2 for 3, 2b, .231

New Orleans 1, Round Rock 2

The Zs were 4 hit in the nightcap of the twi-nighter, losing the game 2-1. Joselo Diaz went 4 innings allowing 2 hits, 5 walks, and 2 runs to take his 5th loss of the season. Ivan Maldonado and Nate Field pitched 3 scoreless innings of relief.

Val Pascucci scored the only run of the game for the Zs, in the 7th inning. He was driven in by a Jesus Feliciano triple. Chris Aguila and Victor Mendez had the other 2 hits for the Zs.

Chris Aguila (lf) 1 for 3, 2 Ks, .270
Val Pascucci (1b) 1 for 1, run, BB, .290

Ivan Maldonado 2 IP, H, 3 Ks, 4.18 era
Nate Field IP, K, 6.04 era

Binghamton 6, Portland 2

This was a scoreless game until the 8th inning, when the Mets exploded for 6 runs, the big blow being a bases clearing double by Dan Murphy. Eric Reed, Emmanuel Garcia and Mike Carp had multiple hits for the Mets, while Ambi Concepcion took the only 0-fer (0 for 4, RBI, K, .247).

Bobby Parnell continued his excellent May with 6.1 shutout innings, allowing just 5 hits and walks. His May has been outstanding (4-1, 3.28 era, 6 GS, 35.2 IP, 29 H, 16 R, 13 ER, 3 HR, 19/22 BB/K, 2.31 GO/FO, .223 BAA, 1.35 WHIP), but he is still walking way too many batters, over 5 per 9 innings. Eddie Camacho worked out of a 2 on 1 out jam in the 7th, then pitched a scoreless 8th, before allowing a couple in the 9th. Tim LaVigne finished out the game.

Eric Reed (cf) 2 for 4, run, BB, K, .235
Emmanuel Garcia (2b) 2 for 4, run, RBI, K, .228
Dan Murphy (3b) 1 for 4, run, 2b, 3 RBI, BB, .330
Caleb Stewart (dh) 1 for 4, run, RBI, .301

Tim LaVigne 0.2 IP, H, 2.89 era

St. Lucie 4, Vero Beach 6

Another night, another bullpen disaster for the St. Lucie Mets. Ryan Coultas blew his 5th save of the season (game 52!), after the Mets had rallied for 3 in the 8th, to take a 4-2 lead. Coultas gave those 3 right back, and Stephen Clyne allowed a run for good measure, as the Mets lost for the 41st time this year.

The bullpen meltdown overshadowed yet another very strong outing from Dylan Owen, who had his longest outing of the season, 6.2 innings. He allowed 4 hits and 2 runs (1 earned), while striking out 8. For the month of May, Owen has produced a 1-1 record, with a scintilating 2.41 era in 6 starts, spanning 33.2 innings. He's allowed 31 hits and 11 runs (9 earned), and 3 homers, while walking 7 and striking out 34. He's held FSL batters to a .244 average.

Lucas Duda had another 2 hit game, his 2nd in a row, as he fights his way out of a slump, while Ruben Tejada had a hit and RBI, struggling along at a .211 clip (remember, he's been insanely overrushed, he's 18 in high A after spending last season in the VSL/GCL). JR Voyles (0 for 4, 2 Ks, .230), Robinson Cancel (0 for 4, RBI, .182), Salvador Paniagua (0 for 4, 3 Ks, .261) and Leivi Ventura (0 for 2, .235) took 0-fers among the regulars.

Ruben Tejada (ss) 1 for 4, 2 runs, 2b, RBI, .211
Lucas Duda (1b) 2 for 4, 2b, RBI, .297
DJ Wabick (rf) 1 for 4, K, .276
Josh Thole (c) 1 for 2, BB, .270

Edgar Alfonzo 0.2 IP, 4.85 era
Ryan Coultas 0.1 IP, 2 H, 3 ER, BB, 4.50 era, BS (5), L (0-4)
Stephen Clyne 0.2 IP, H, ER, 10.42 era

Savannah 6-9-5, Augusta 12-16-0

An ugly night defensively for the Gnats, as Augusta scored in 6 of the 9 innings, putting up 12 runs, 3 of them were UER due to 5 Gnats errors (Moviel 2 (6, throw, throw), Guzman (1, throw), Eigsti (5, fielding), Rodriguez (3, missed catch)). Scott Moviel started and was pitiful, allowing 4 hits to go along with 5 walks and 4 runs (3 earned - though he made 2 errors on his own). Julio Polanco followed with a more disasterous outing (1.1 ip, 7 h, 4 er). John Holdzkom (1.1 ip) and Jose Bierd (ip) both allowed 2 runs (1 earned). Sandwiched in between was Brant Rustich, who pitched a very solid 1.2 innings of perfect relief.

Greg Veloz seems to get 2 hits a night lately, in fact, 5 of his last 7 games, he's gotten 2 or more hits (he's hitting .349 over his last 10). He and Richard Pena have settled in pretty nicely at the top 2 spots in the order for the Gnats (Pena is hitting .324 over his last 10). Outside of those two, however, there has not been much consistency in the Gnats young lineup. Veloz and Pena combined to go 4 for 8 with a run, 3b, 4 RBI and walk tonight, the 3 through 7 hitters went 1 for 18, and the 3 thru 6 were 0 for 15 (Casey Craig, Jordan Abruzzo, Joaquin Rodriguez, Michael Parker). Jacob Elgsti and Matt Bouchard had multi hit games out of the 8-9 spots.

Greg Veloz (2b) 2 for 5, run, 3b, 3 RBI, .249
Richard Pena (cf) 2 for 3, RBI, BB, .256
Carlos Guzman (rf) 1 for 3, run, 2b, BB, K, .280

5/28 Minor League Report!

New Orleans 1, Round Rock 5

Tony Armas continues to throw excellent baseball down in AAA, and he keeps getting really tough luck losses. Tonight was no different, Armas gave up a run on 6 hits in 7 innings, good enough to pick up his 5th loss of the year. Jose Santiago came in to ignite a fire and throw gasoline onto it, giving up 4 runs (3 earned) in 2 innings (his error lead to the UER). The offense managed just 7 hits and a run themselves, that coming on a sac fly by Anderson Machado in the 9th. 7 different Zs had hits, with Val Pascucci the only one held hitless (0 for 4, K, .278).

Argenis Reyes (2b) 1 for 3, BB, K, .262

Eric Brown didn't pitch badly at all, but the Mets offense was silenced, held to just 6 hits and a run. Brown allowed just 3 runs (2 earned) over 6.1 innings, while striking out 6. Tim LaVigne pitched a perfect 1.2 innings in relief, but the Mets just couldn't get anything mustered against the Sea Dogs bullpen.

Eric Reed (0 for 4, K, .200), Caleb Stewart (0 for 4, K, .303), Ambi Concepcion (0 for 3, BB, K, .253), and Emmanuel Garcia (0 for 4, run, K, .222) all took 0-fers, while Josh Petersen had the only multi hit game.

Tim LaVigne 1.2 IP, 2 Ks, 3.12 era

St. Lucie 0, Vero Beach 2

The past/present met the future in St. Lucie tonight, as Pedro Martinez made a rehab start for the Mets, opposed by DRay's future ace David Price, last year's first overall pick in the draft. Price proved to be better tonight (6 ip, 2 h, 9 ks), but more importantly for the big Mets, Pedro Martinez was on top of his game, allowing just 2 runs on 4 hits in 6 innings, throwing 63/82 pitches for strikes.

The Mets were 4 hit by Price and 2 relievers, with the 4 hits coming from 2 players, Lucas Duda (2 for 4, 2b, 2 Ks, .293) and Robinson Cancel (2 for 3, K, .286). Everyone else took 0-fers.

Nelson Figueroa made his first start for the Zs, and it was a very good one, he went 8 innings, allowing 9 hits and 3 runs while striking out 8. Nate Field worked the 9th for his 5th save.

Eric Reed singled twice and scored 2 runs out of the leadoff spot, but those were the only runs scored by Binghamton, as ineffective starting pitching (story of the season outside of select non-Niese starts) once again plagued the Mets, dropping them to 2 under .500 at 24-26.

Stephen Clyne lowered his ERA by allowing a run over 2 innings, but that happened to be the game decider in the 8th, so he took his 3rd loss. Tobi Stoner had yet another outstanding start for the Mets, going 7 innings allowing just 2 runs on 2 hits and a walk, striking out 7.

The offense managed just 7 hits and 2 runs, themselves, with the middle of the order going 2 for 11 with a 2b and 2 RBI. Robinson Cancel made a rehab appearance, going 0 for 4. DJ Wabick (0 for 4, 2 Ks, .281), Leivi Ventura (0 for 2, BB, 2 Ks, .242), and Bradley Hubbert (0 for 4, 3 Ks, .256) took 0-fers.

5/26 Minor League Report! MURPHY!!!!! ANTONINI!!!!!!

New Orleans 8, Albuquerque 2

The Zs blew it open late with a 5 run 8th, and Brian Stokes had another good outing, as the Zs moved back to the .500 marker at 25-25.

Stokes went 6 innings, allowing 4 hits and 2 runs, continuing his strong pitching over his last 4 starts (26.1 ip, 21 h, 7 er, 7 bb, 25 Ks, 2-2, 2.39 era). Jose Santiago and Tim McNab pitched 2 scoreless innings to keep it at 3-2 Zs, then the offense exploded for 5 in the 8th to ice it.

It was the Dan Murphy show today, Murphy blasted 3 homers and drove in 5, but it was in a losing cause as Jonathan Niese had yet another subpar outing (his 4th in his last 6 starts) and to compound matters, after Murphy's 2nd homer gave the Mets a 6-5 lead, Eddie Kunz blew the save in the 9th, surrendering 3 hits, 2 walks and 3 runs.

Outside of the almost heroics of Dan Murphy, 2 others had multi hit games (Caleb Stewart and Eric Reed), while Mike Carp (0 for 5, .333) and Rafael Arroyo (0 for 3, BB, .212) took 0-fers. The Mets fell back under .500 at 24-25.

5/25 Minor League Report! Garcia, Carp!

New Orleans 4, Albuquerque 2

Ruddy Lugo had a good bounceback outing off his last 2 poor starts (7 ip, 13 h, 10 er, 6/2 bb/k, 12.86 era), going 7 inning of 1 run ball, scattering 3 hits and 2 walks, while striking out 9. Ivan Maldonado closed it out with 2 innings of 1 run ball for his first save.

Val Pascucci and Anderson Hernandez (who had 2 RBI) had solo homers for the Zs, who moved to 24-25 on the season. Jesus Feliciano had a bases loaded walk, accounting for the 4 RBI. AHern had the only multi hit game, while Abraham Nunez (0 for 2, run, 3 BBs, .205, SB (6)), Chris Aguila (0 for 4, BB, 2 Ks, .263), Jesus Feliciano (0 for 3, RBI, BB, K, .320) and Mike Nickeas (0 for 3, run, BB, 2 Ks, .231) took 0-fers.

Binghamton 7, Reading 10

The Mets got a terrible start out of Salvador Aguilar, and then to compound matters, got absolutely pathetic relief pitching out of German Marte and Robert Paulk, each of whom allowed 3 runs on 2 hits in consecutive innings (7 and 8) - which factored largely into the outcome, because the Mets rallied for 4 in the 9th, but fell short by 3 runs.

The Mets did pound out 14 hits, with every regular except Dan Murphy (0 for 5, .323) getting a hit, and 5 getting multiple hits. The Mets fell back to .500 at 24-24.

Emmanuel Garcia (2b) 3 for 5, 2 runs, 2b, RBI, .226
Jose Coronado (ss) 2 for 4, run, 3 RBI, K, .259
Dan Murphy (3b) 0 for 5, .323

Robert Paulk 2 IP, 3 H, 3 ER, 2 BBs, K, 16.55 era

So, this is why Omar went RP crazy in the 07 draft - most of our non-07 draftees suck balls. And even then, only Kunz and Rustich are the ones to keep your eyes on, Niesen, Clyne, and the rest are no good, especially considering where they were drafted.

St. Lucie 6, Sarasota 2

Eric Niesen had only his 2nd good outing of the season, which resulted in his 2nd win of the season. He went 5.1 innings allowing 4 hits and a run, but he did walk 4, and only strike out 3, but maybe he can build off this positive outing. Emary Frederick pitching 2.2 scoreless innings in middle relief, and Ryan Coultas finished it off, allowing a run in the 9th.

The Mets had 13 hits, with eveyr starter getting at least one hit, and 3 had multi hit games. The Mets since hitting their most recent bottom at 9-38 have won 2 of 3.

Ruben Tejada (ss) 1 for 4, BB, .212

Hallelujah!!! ANGEL CALERO GOT HIS FIRST WIN! And he didn't even pitch well, in fact, he had his second worst start of the season, only lasting 5+, allowing 6 hits and 4 runs. Savannah, however, put up a 6 spot in the 6th, and those runs belonged to Calero, so he left on the long end of a 9-2 game. Edgar Ramirez allowed both of Calero's IHR to score, plus one of his own, trimming it to a 9-5 lead, but Brant Rustich and Stephen Cheney slammed the door on any other rally attempts, working 2 scoreless innings to ensure Calero got his first win. The Gnats are 21-29 now.

The Gnats offense was on point today, hammering out 13 hits, and scoring all 9 runs without the benefit of a homer. 5 Gnats had multiple hits, and every Gnat regular had a hit except Francisco Pena, who went 0 for 4 with a RBI, walk and strikeout. He's now batting .266 and is 1 for his last 16 since hitting the .300 marker.

5/24 Minor League Report! EVANS!!!!!!!!!!!!!! CARP, RAMIREZ!

Mets 9, Rockies 2

Nick Evans (lf) 3 for 4, 2 runs, 3 2b, RBI, .750

Willie Collazo delievered an outstanding start, going 6.2 shutout innings, allowing just 4 hits, while striking out 4. Tim McNab and Nate Field closed it out, with Field getting his 4th save.

The offense managed just 4 hits, with the lone run coming off a Val Pascucci HR in the 2nd.

Bobby Parnell was victimized by an Emmanuel Garcia error in the 3rd, leading to 3 unearned runs off Parnell. Aside from that, however, Bobby was in full Freakin' mode today, registering an absurd 11:1 groundball to flyball ratio, with 6 Ks. Robert Paulk allowed a run in 0.1 innings, but Eddie Camacho saved his bacon, and Tim LaVigne got the save, the Mets are back over .500 at 24-23.

The Mets were paced offensively by 2 hit games from Jose Coronado, Caleb Stewart and Mike Carp. Eric Reed (0 for 4, .111) took the only 0-fer.

Reverse yesterday's "are you kidding me?" spiel, there's your game story. The Mets trailed 8-1 after 5, only to put up 5 in the 6th to pull within 2, but ulimately the rally fell short, as they lost 8-6. Lucas Duda and DJ Wabick had 2 run homers one batter apart in the 5 run inning, and the other run came off a 3rd inning JR Voyles homer.

Nick Carr didn't make it out of the 2nd inning, allowing 6 hits and 5 runs in just an inning plus. Casey Hoorelbeke (another 27 year old retread reliever the Mets have tried) provided some very ineffective 3 innings of long relief, allowing 5 hits and 3 runs of his own, plus allowing both of Carr's IHR to score in the 2nd. Edgar Alfonzo and Elvys Quezada pitched 4 shutout innings, giving the Mets a chance, but that rally fell short, as stated above.

Ruben Tejada (ss) 0 for 2, K, .212

You know what, this just came to me, but I'd pay to hear Keith refer to Valentin on SNY as Pornstache. It'd be hilarious, especially when he'd have to explain it to Ron and Gary.

Savannah 4, Greenville 2

Elvin Ramirez was cruising along into the 7th with a 4-1 lead, when trouble found him. He left with 2 down in the inning and the bases loaded, but Julio Polanco stranded all 3 runners, preserving the lead, and the win for Ramirez. Polanco pitched 2.1 innings to earn his 2nd save of the season.

Jordan Abruzzo and Michael Parker had multi hit games to pace the 8 hit attack from the 3 and 8 hole, respectively. Francisco Pena had an RBI triple from the 5 hole, while Jose Jimenez (0 for 4, RBI, 2 Ks, .235) and Joaquin Rodriguez (0 for 4, K, .270) took 0-fers from the cleanup spot and the 7 hole. The Gnats are 20-29.

First 9 inning CG of the minor league season, a CG 3 hit shutout. He walked one and struck out 2, getting 15 ground ball outs, 10 flyouts, and those 2 Ks, he only faced 4 over the minimum in getting his first win of the season. He got all the offense he would need on a 2 out Greg Veloz RBI single in the 5th, the Gnats added a pair in the 6th for insurance.

The Zs have now dropped 9 of 10 and are 21-25 with today's loss. Adam Bostick started and got whalloped for 6 runs on 6 hits in just 1.1 innings. His ERA is now over 6. Nelson Figueroa had a very good outing in long relief, going 4.2 innings allowing just 3 hits and 2 walks, striking out 5. Nate Field and Carlos Muniz each pitched a scoreless inning, but it was too little too late.

The Zs did pound out 12 hits, but only had 2 runs to show for it. Argenis Reyes, Abraham Nunez and Mike Nickeas had multi hit games, while Michel Abreu (0 for 4, K, .223) and Victor Mendez (0 for 3, BB, K, .268) took 0-fers.

The problem today, aside from Jose Sanchez giving up 6 runs in 4.1 innings? The 3-4-5 in the BMets order (Evans, Carp, Concepcion) went 1 for 14 with 3 Ks. Sanchez was the bigger issue, obviously, giving up 6 runs on 8 hits (2 homers) and a walk in just 4.1 innings.

NIck Evans (0 for 5, 2 Ks, .287), Mike Carp (0 for 4, BB, K, .331) and Jose Coronado (0 for 3, BB, K, .245) took 0-fers, while Emmanuel Garcia, Dan Murphy, Saloman Manriquez and Eric Reed had multi hit games.

Emmanuel Garcia (2b) 2 for 5, run, 2 Ks, .212

5/21 Minor League Report! Trinity! Niese!

Binghamton 2, Connecticut 1

Good night for the Trinity = good night for the Mets. The Trinity went 5 for 9 with 3 walks and both RBI (1 each for Evans and Carp) - and Jon Niese rebounded from a disaster his last outing, allowing just a run on 4 hits in 5.2 innings, leading the Mets back to .500, at 22-22. It's a good thing the Trinity hit, because no one else in the lineup did, except Jose Coronado in the 8 hole (2 for 4, .250). Everyone else took 0-fers.

Dan Murphy (3b) 2 for 3, 2 runs, BB, .335, SB (5)

St. Lucie 3, Dunedin 7

It was a good game, 2-1 Dunedin going to the 7th, but then all hell broke loose. Single, bunt, Stephen Clyne replaced Stoner, then Clyne got a grounder, then IBBed a hitter. Then gave up an RBI single, before yielding to Edgar Alfonzo, who allowed a 2 run 2b and an RBI single. Alfonzo also allowed a run in the 8th, and the Mets scored 2 in the 9th, falling 7-3, and dropping back to their low water mark, 9-37 (28 under). The Mets did have 10 hits, but couldn't put together any big innings. Luis Rivera and DJ Wabick had multi hit games, while Ruben Tejada was the only Met to go hitless (0 for 4, BB, K, .220).

Luis Rivera (2b) 2 for 5, .252
Lucas Duda (dh) 1 for 4, K, .287

Savannah 1, Augusta 2

Michael Antonini took a very tough loss today, despite going 5.2 innings, allowing just 2 runs on 3 hits, while striking out 8, as the Gnats offense was completely shut down by Augusta.

The Gnats scattered 5 hits throughout the order, 1 apiece for Greg Veloz (1 for 3, BB, .221), Richard Pena (1 for 3, BB, 2 Ks, .223), Jordan Abruzzo (1 for 4, .323), Carlos Guzman (1 for 3, 2 Ks, .400), and Jacob Elgsti (1 for 3, run, K, .250), with the lone RBI coming off the bat of Casey Craig. Everyone else took 0-fers.

Brian Stokes gave up 5 runs in 6 innings, but only 2 were earned, thanks to an Abraham Nunez (3b) error. Jose Santiago put the game out of reach by giving up 3 in the 8th, the Zs fell to 21-24 with the loss.

The offense only managed 7 hits and 2 runs, with 5 of the hits coming from Argenis Reyes (3) and Raul Casanova (2). Chris Aguila provided the runs with a 2 run homer in the 5th.

A day after getting embarassed, the Mets won for just the 2nd time in 17 games, with the 3-4-5 (Lucas Duda, Salvador Paniagua and DJ Wabick) going 6 for 13 with a homer and 3 RBI. Chris Fournier set the tone with a 2nd inning 3 run homer, getting the Mets off to a fast start. Leivi Ventura and Bradley Hubbert went 0 for 4, they're batting .257 and .333 respectively.

Eric Niesen had a good outing, pitching 6 complete for only the first time all season, getting his first victory of the season. Tim Stronach allowed a run in the 7th, and Ryan Coultas finished the game out with 1.2 scoreless, picking up his 2nd save.

Savannah 3, Augusta 5

Another start, another loss for Angel Calero due to poor run support (and then to top it off, a early end due to rain). Calero didn't pitch as well as in other starts, but he didn't pitch terribly, either. He allowed 5 hits and 3 runs (2 earned) over 5.1 innings. Steven Cheney allowed 2 runs on 4 hits over 1.1 innings to put the game away. Savannah scored 3 in the 7th, but fell short in their rally attempt, falling to 18-27 on the season.

The top 2 in the order (Veloz, R Pena) went 0 for 5 with 3 Ks. Jordan Abruzzo (0 for 3, 2 Ks, .326), Michael Parker (0 for 3, K, .228) and Joaquin Rodriguez (0 for 3, .283) also took 0-fers, while Casey Craig, Francisco Pena and Jacob Elgsti had multi-hit games.

5/19 Minor League Report! MURPHY, CARP, AGUILAR!

Tonight's Song: Evanescence - Understanding

New Orleans 3, Oklahoma where the wind comes whistling down the plain 12

Little excessive? There was something a little excessive about the number of runs given up by Ruddy Lugo (7) and Joselo Diaz (5), too. Lugo went 3 ip, and Diaz went 2. Ivan Maldonado pitched 3 scoreless innings to close it out, but it was much too little, much too late, as the Zs fell to 21-23.

The top 3 in the Zs order (AHern, Jesus Feliciano, Chris Aguila) went 0 for 13 with 2 walks and 3 Ks, making it hard for the Zs to put together any rallies. Raul Casanova and Anderson Machado had multi hit games, with 2 hits a piece.

Binghamton 9, Connecticut 0

It was kind of like old times today, as Dan Murphy and Mike Carp went OFF, combining to go 7 for 9 with 3 runs, 2b, 2 RBI, and a BB. Caleb Stewart had his second straight outstanding game, with 3 more hits after 4 yesterday. Nick Evans (0 for 4, run, BB, .291) and Saloman Manriquez (0 for 4, run, BB, 2 Ks, .217) went hitless.

Salvador Aguilar pitched brilliant baseball for 6.2 innings, before yielding to Eude Brito, who got the final out in the 7th. Robert Paulk and Tim LaVigne finished off the 6 hit shutout. The Mets are now 21-22.

Emmanuel Garcia (2b) 1 for 5, run, 2 RBI, 2 Ks, .205

St. Lucie 2, Dunedin 15

It was ugly in Dunedin, Florida, tonight. How ugly? JR Voyles, a position player, pitched the 8th for the Mets. He didn't fare much better then Nick Carr (2.2 ip, 6 er) or Elvys Quezada (recently signed - ip, 4 er). It was an ugly night all around for the Mets, who fell to 8-36 with the loss. They've lost 15 of 16.

The top 4 in the Mets order (Will Vogl, Ruben Tejada, DJ Wabick, Lucas Duda) went 1 for 16, with the lone hit (and a run scored) coming from DJ Wabick. Lucas Duda drove him in, Salvador Paniagua supplied the other RBI with a homer.

Salvador Paniagua (dh) 2 for 3, run, HR, RBI, K, .286

Elvin Ramirez had a rare bad outing, surrendering 6 hits and 4 runs over 4.2 innings, and the bullpen couldn't hold it there, with Nick Waechter and Brant Rustich giving up 3 runs in 4.1 innings, dooming the Gnats to their 26th loss (18-26).

Theme of the night (outside of Binghamton) - the top 3 in the Gnat order (Veloz, Parker and Craig) went 2 for 14 with 7 Ks. Craig had a 2 RBI 3b, though. Jordan Abruzzo and Jose Jimenez had multi-hit games, while Michael Parker (0 for 4, 2 Ks, .241), Joaquin Rodriguez (0 for 4, 3 Ks, .298) took 0-fers.

Revisiting my thoughts on the Milledge for Church+Schneider trade...

I think it is time to revisit my thoughts on the trade...How right was I? Church is a stud.

My take on the Milledge trade

Ok I know Tejesh, and many other Mets fans were infuriated by this trade, I mean come on, look at it, our "budding all star home grown outfielder" (/end sarcasm) for two scrubs from the Nationals. I loved Milledge as much as the next fan, but to be 100% honest, chances are he wasn't going to be an All Star any time soon. 5 tools? Maybe so, but most of the 5 tools are mediocre at best. While I think he will be able to hit for good average, the ceiling on his power and overall defense or speed doesn't have All-Star written anywhere on it. Lets face it, Milledge was going to be a homegrown, young, cheap, decent outfielder. Nothing wrong with that, but to say this rivals the KAZMIR trade, in which we traded a stud ACE left handed pitcher is disgustingly off base. That brings me to my next point in relation to the Kazmir trade. Zambrano, while a decent pitcher when we acquired him with a bit of upside, had 1 solid season for us. After that? Nothing. We traded 15 years of an ACE lefty pitcher for 1 year of a 4.2 era #4 pitcher. Milledge was traded for a top 3 defensive catcher in the game(who is still only 31), who also handles pitching staffs really well and should make a huge impact right away on our younger pitchers, and an OF'er who was once as highly regarded as Milledge, but might be somewhat of a late bloomer. Church was far from bad last year, he showed good power(43 2b and 15 hr in 470 ab in the worst park for hitters in the league, not to mention on a non contending team with hardly any protection in the lineup) and has had a consistent .275+ avg the last 2 years.
Neither Schneider nor Church are garbage players, to say that is ignorant. Both, IMO, are upgrades to this team for the 2008 season. Is it just me, or am I the only one who thinks Church has a chance to be another one of those hidden gems Omar grabs, ala Maine, who breaks out next season for some ridiculously unexpected(around here) .290+, 30 hr, 35 2b, 100 rbi, season? Sure hes 29, but look at Carlos Pena! Another late blooming left handed hitter who just recently got a chance at 600+ ab in his prime, and look what he did. I'm not saying Church will put up the ridiculous numbers Pena put up, but who is to say he won't outperform an essentially rookie 22 year old outfielder who hasn't really put up any stats worth getting worked up over? I am willing to bet that Church outperforms Milledge in 2008, AND the 2009 season, at least. If you can figure out a fair measure of performance(whether it be OPS, SLG, combination of Average, power, production, whatever), I'll make a friendly bet with you.

The trade isn't fantastic, its not a slam dunk for an Ace we were looking for, and I don't think is was necessary, but whats done is done. It happened, and theres nothing we can do about it besides root for our 2 newest players, and talk about what they will do to help this team win a world series next season. We upgraded 2 positions in one fell swoop. We gave up a guy who's ceiling isn't nearly as high as the 2 other OF'ers we have in our system, and got back someone who becomes my breakout candidate for 08, as well as a catcher who won't get run on everytime someone is on base and will be able to improve this pitching staff tremendously while working with some of our younger "throwers".

5/18 Minor League Report! Evans!

New Orleans 5, Nashville 8

Willie Collazo's 2nd start didn't go nearly as well as his first, but he did leave with a 5-4 lead, but the combination of Joselo Diaz and Nelson Figueroa blew it in the 6th, allowing 3 runs.

The Zs offense was paced by 3 hits a piece from Jesus Feliciano and Victor Mendez, with Mendez hitting a 3 run homer in the 3rd. Anderson Hernandez (0 for 3, 2 BBs, K, .186), Chris Aguila (0 for 4, BB, K, .276) and Argenis Reyes (0 for 1, run, 2 BBs, .246) took 0-fers. The Zs fell to 21-22.

Binghamton 5, Erie 10

Bobby Parnell snapped a string of 3 straight solid outings (2 runs each, over 6.1, 5 and 7 innings) by getting absolutely BOMBED for 6 runs on 7 hits and 5 walks over 5 innings. Parnell's biggest culprit this season has been his walks. He's now walked 28 in 46 innings, a ridiculous 5.47 per 9 innings. Contrast that to only 24 Ks, or 4.70 per 9. He's got a 2.13 GO/FO ratio, and is holding EL batters to a .246 average, so the walks are the only thing holding Parnell back. Joe Hietpas (2 ip, er) and German Marte (2 ip, 3 er) put the game out of reach in relief.

Dan Murphy, Nick Evans and Caleb Stewart had multi hit games for the Mets, who fell to 2 under .500, 20-22. Eric Reed (0 for 4, K, .000), Jose Coronado (0 for 4, run, BB, .243), and Emmanuel Garcia (0 for 3, BB, .206) all went hitless. By the way - what would this be called? Rafael Arroyo 0 for 0, 4 BBs?

Mike Carp (ph, 1b) 0 for 1, .326
Dan Murphy (3b) 2 for 5, .315
Nick Evans (1b, lf) 2 for 4, run, 2b (8), HR (8), 2 RBI (30), BB, K, .299

Dillon Gee didn't pitch terribly (wasn't good, but wasn't horrible), allowing 4 hits and 3 runs over 5 innings, but the Met offense was held to a run on 7 hits, in losing their 35th game of the season. Emary Frederick and Ryan Coultas pitched 3 scoreless innings in relief, giving the offense a chance, but nothing happened.

Ruben Tejada, since hitting bottom around .200 a week ago, has gone 9 for his last 30 with a homer, 4 RBI, a walk and 3 Ks. He had another multi hit game today, his 5th in his last 9 GP. Bradley Hubbert also had a multi hit game. Luis Rivera (0 for 4, .237), DJ Wabick (0 for 4, .265), Salvador Paniagua (0 for 4, 2 Ks) and Chris Fournier (0 for 3, K, .500) had hitless games.

Scott Moviel also snapped a recent string of good starts, allowing 6 hits and 7 runs (2 earned) over 4.2 innings. A Joaquin Rodriguez 1 out error in the 4th opened the door for 3 runs in that inning, and a pair of errors by Matt Bouchard (his 16th) and Moviel (his 3rd) opened the floodgates for 2 more. Edgar Ramirez and Julio Polanco didn't fare much better, giving up 2 runs and 4 runs over 0.1 ip and 3 ip, respectively.

Greg Veloz (0 for 5, 2 Ks, .222) and Jacob Elgsti (0 for 4, 2 Ks, .220) took 0-fers, while Casey Craig, Carlos Guzman and Jose Jimenez had 2 hit games.

Tony Armas continued to mow down the PCL, this time holding the sounds to just 2 hits over 7 innings, lowering his ERA to 2.63. However, he only picked up his 2nd win. Nelson Figueroa pitched scoreless 8th, but Carlos Muniz gave up a run in the 9th, the 3rd straight outing he's given up a run.

The Zs had 10 hits, led by Chris Aguila's 3. Jesus Feliciano and Raul Casanova also had multi hit games, while Anderson Hernandez (0 for 5, 3 Ks, .189) and Michel Abreu (0 for 4, K, .233) went hitless. The Zs are back at .500, 21-21.

Binghamton 2, Erie 0, Game 1

The Mets managed just 5 hits and 2 runs in Game 1 of the double dip, but it was enough to hold off Erie, as Jose Sanchez and Eddie Kunz combined on a 3 hit shutout. Sanchez went 6 allowing just a hit and a walk, striking out 6. Kunz allowed 2 hits in the 7th, but worked around them in notching his 9th save of the season.

The RBI came off the bats of Caleb Stewart (3b) and Jose Coronado (grounder). Eric Reed (who was just signed to take Fernando's roster spot (Nando's on the DL)), went 0 for 2. Dan Murphy (0 for 3, K, .318), Ambi Concepcion (0 for 3, 2 Ks, .254), Saloman Manriquez (0 for 1, BB, .225) and Coronado (0 for 2, RBI, .236) took 0-fers.

Eric Brown survived 5.1 innings, getting bombed for 10 hits and 5 runs, but picking up a cheap win nonetheless, as Binghamton swept the doubleheader and moved to within a game of .500, at 20-21. The BMets offense kicked into gear for the nightcap, hammering out 10 hits and 7 runs. 4 players had 9 of the hits, while 4 took 0-fers (Jon Malo 0 for 4, K; Dan Murphy 0 for 3, K, .313, Nick Evans 0 for 3, run, .293; Caleb Stewart 0 for 3, .255).

Nick Abel got bombed for 2 hits and 4 runs in the 10th, providing Daytona with their winning margin, and dropping the Mets to a staggering 8-34. Dylan Owen had started, and pitched very well, giving up just 6 hits and 2 runs (1 earned) over 6 innings. Casey Hoorelbeke allowed a run in the 7th, and Stephen Clyne allowed a run in the 9th, before the Mets rallied for 2 in the bottom of the 9th to tie it, setting the stage for Abel to get bombed.

5/16 Minor League Report! 420! (heh, Stoner!)

New Orleans 8, Nashville 10

Adam Bostick got BOMBED for 8 hits and 7 runs over just 3.1 innings, but the Zs rallied back to get him off the hook, and then take a brief 8-7 lead off Derrick Turnbow in the 8th, but Nate Field gave up 3 runs on 3 walks and a homer in the bottom of the 8th, providing the winning margin for the Sounds.

The offense was terrific in pounding out 13 hits and 8 runs. Every regular except Chris Aguila (0 for 5, RBI, 3 Ks, .268) got a hit, and 5 got multiple hits.

St. Lucie 2, Daytona 3

It was a very weird night in St. Lucie, with lineup changes and players showing up and playing out of position...but they still lost. Tobi Stoner continued his excellence on the mound, only giving up a run on 6 hits in 6 innings, but the bullpen, as it has most of this season, couldn't hold the lead. Casey Hoorelbeke surrendered the tying run in the 7th, and Ryan Coultas gave up the winning run in the 9th.

As I said, the lineup was ... interesting for the Mets tonight. DJ Wabick (lf), Luis Rivera (2b), Josh Thole (c), Lucas Duda (1b), Ezequiel Carrera (cf), Jason Jacobs (rf), Ruben Tejada (ss), Leivi Ventura (3b), Josh Petersen (dh). It was Jacobs first career OF appearance. Chris Fournier made a PH appearance, and Bradley Hubbert took over for Carrera in CF (he was drafted as a catcher).

None of that worked, however, the Mets managed just 6 hits and 2 runs, and lost for the 33rd time in their first 41 games. Wabick (0 for 4, RBI, .278), Carrera (0 for 1, BB, .244), Hubbert (0 for 1, K), Jacobs (0 for 4, K, .235), Tejada (0 for 3, .219), and Petersen (0 for 3, .220) took 0-fers.

Luis Rivera 1 for 4, .261
Josh Thole 1 for 3, run, K, .241

Savannah 4, Greenville 5

Michael Antonini had a good start tonight, going 6+, allowing 8 hits and 3 runs (2 earned), but Brant Rustich allowed 2 in the 7th, turning a 4-3 lead into a 5-4 deficit, and the Gnats lost by that count.

Richard Pena, for someone who is 20 2/3 years old really has a very good eye at the plate. He drew 3 walks tonight, and has a 12/14 BB/K ratio. His IsoD is 110. The Gnats offense only managed 4 hits, but they also drew 4 walks, and had timely hits in scoring 4 runs. Pena (0 for 1, run, 3 BBs, .237, 2 SB (4)), Casey Craig (0 for 3, run, BB, 2 Ks, .388), Jordan Abruzzo (0 for 4, run, RBI, 2 Ks, .327), Jose Jimenez (0 for 3, RBI, K, .216), Jake Elgsti (0 for 4, K, .235) and Matt Bouchard (0 for 4, 2 Ks, .216, E (15)) took 0-fers. The Gnats are now 18-23.

5/15 Minor League Report! Murphy, Evans, ABRUZZO!

New Orleans 1, Nashville 2

The Zs were 2 hit, and Brian Stokes was on the other end of that lack of offense, not a good combination. Stokes allowed 5 hits and 2 runs, enough to send him to his 4th loss of the season. Tim McNab pitched the final 2 innings.

The hits came off the bats of Gustavo Molina (1 for 4, run, K, .241) and Anderson Machado (1 for 2, RBI, BB, K, .159) with Machado getting the lone RBI. The Zs are back at .500, at 20-20.

Binghamton 7, New Britain 6 in 11 innings

Jon Niese flat out didn't have it tonight, giving up 8 hits and 6 runs in just 3 innings. He walked one and didn't strike out a batter. However, the Mets bullpen turned in their best collective effort of the season, going 8 innings of 4 hit shutout relief. Eude Brito, German Marte, Tim LaVigne and Eddie Camacho were the pitchers.

Not quite as foreboding a word with Carp out, but the Duo had a good day, going a combined 6 for 12 with 3 runs, 2b, 3b, 2 RBI. Aside from them, Ambi Concepcion, Saloman Manriquez and Salvador Paniagua put together multi hit games to power the 15 hit attack. Jose Coronado was the only Met with an 0-fer, he went 0 for 6 with a K, lowering his average to .239. The Mets are now 18-21.

Another day, another loss for the Mets, their 32nd in their first 40 games (8-32). That is a .200 WPCT, over a 162 game season, they'd be on pace for 32.4-129.6. Tonight it was Eric Niesen who took a loss, allowing 3 runs in 5 innings. Tim Stronach and Stephen Clyne each allowed a run in their time on the mound.

Despite the loss, 4 of the top 5 hitters in the order had 2 hits, and the top 5 got on base 10 times. Unfortunately, the bottom 4 only had 1 hit and 1 walk, so the Mets stranded 9 runners. Lucas Duda (0 for 2, 2 BBs, K, .291), Josh Thole (0 for 2, BB, .238), Ruben Tejada (0 for 4, .223), and Sean McCraw (0 for 3, 2 Ks, .150) took 0-fers.

Angel Calero cruised through the first 5 innings, then ran into 6th inning trouble, surrendering 3 runs (with help from Nick Waechter, who allowed 1 IHR to score). Still Calero struck out 6 in 5.1 innings, and his ERA is still a sparkling 2.68. Waechter picked up the win in relief, going 3 innings, and Jose Bierd notched his 5th save of the season.

Jordan Abruzzo had a huge night, going 4 for 4 with a run and RBI, he was the lone Gnat with more then one hit. Casey Craig (0 for 3, run, BB, .413, CS (2)), Joaquin Rodriguez (0 for 2, BB, .326) and Matt Bouchard (0 for 2, K, .222) took 0-fers for the Gnats, who are now 18-22.

5/14 Minor League Report! Nando injured on CS attempt

Binghamton 5, New Britain 2

The story of this game will be the health of Fernando. He had an RBI single to give the Mets a 3-2 lead, but then came up limping on a steal attempt, and had to leave the game (once more, thanks to MRCONSTRUCTIVECRITICISM on NYFS).

Update: On Brian Moritz' blog, he tells us FMart felt a slight pop in his right hammy. Not good, and they'll be uber careful with their prize prospect, one would think.

Onto the game. Dan Murphy had a 2 run homer in the first for the Mets, but Salvador Aguilar gave that right back in the 2nd. The Mets took the lead for good on FMart's RBI single in the 2nd, and tacked on runs in the 5th and 6th. Mike Carp missed his 5th straight game with a rib cage strain (maybe, if he's not out for long, this could be a good thing, he was slumping pretty badly when he got hurt). Every position player except Rafael Arroyo had a hit, Arroyo went 0 for 2, BB, K, .231.

Aguilar pitched an effective 5 innings, allowing 2 runs on 5 hits, including a homer. Interestingly, Eric Brown appeared in relief, pitching 2 perfect innings. Joe Hietpas and Eddie Kunz rounded out the effort, Kunz with his 8th save.

The Mets ran into one of the top pitching prospects in high A, Jeremy Hellickson, and it showed, they managed just 8 hits and 2 runs (on back to back homers by Ruben Tejada (his first stateside homer) and Leivi Ventura). Very quietly, Ruben Tejada's starting to hit again, he's had 3 multi hit games in his last 5, and over his last 6 games, he's hitting 8 for 21 (.381/.435/.524) with a homer, 2 RBI, 2 walks and 3 strikeouts. Aside from Tejada, Luis Rivera also had a multi hit game for the Mets, who fell to 8-30.

Nick Carr started and did not pitch terribly, allowing 3 runs and 6 hits over 6 innings, nonetheless, he was tagged with his fourth loss of the season.

Elvin Ramirez was very good today, throwing 6 innings of 2 hit shutout ball, striking out 8. Ramirez continues the trend of pitchers who started off slowly in their new league, and have since adjusted very nicely. Ramirez' first 3 GS in A ball produced these results: 1-1, 6.57 era, 3 GS, 12.1 IP, 16 H, 4/8 BB/K, 1.62 WHIP. And that includes his first start of 5 ip, 2 h, er, 2 bb, 4 k. However, since then, his last 5 GS have been much better, producing the following: 3-1, 1.73 era, 5 GS, 26 IP, 20 H, 9/24 BB/K, 1.12 WHIP.

Wendy Rosa gave up 2 runs in his 3 innings of work, not pitching well at all, but picking up a save nonetheless. The Gnats managed just 6 hits, but made them count. 5 players had those hits, while 4 went hitless Greg Veloz (0 for 2, 2 BBs, .229), Richard Pena (0 for 4, K, .240), Jordan Abruzzo (0 for 3, run, BB, K, .314), and Matt Bouchard (0 for 3, .225).

5/13 Minor League Report! PARNELL, GEE, MOVIEL!

Binghamton 4, New Britain 2

It's been a weird first 6.5 weeks in minor league baseball land, as the lesser known names are putting together good/great seasons (Calero, Antonini), and some of the knowns are struggling mightily (Moviel, Parnell). Well, quietly, over the last week to 10 days, both Parnell, here in Binghamton, and Moviel, down in Savannah, have turned it around. More on Moviel (who also went today) later.

Bobby Parnell had the longest outing of his season, and his best, dominating the New Britain lineup for 7 innings, allowing 2 runs on 5 hits. Of his 21 outs, 13 were via groundball, vintage Parnell. Over his last 3 starts, Parnell's done this: 18.1 ip, 12 h, 6 er, 9 bbs, 6 ks, 3-0, 2.95 era. Tim LaVIgne, Eddie Camacho and Eddie Kunz finished off the game, with Kunz picking up his 7th save. Over Kunz' last 7 outings, he's gone 8 ip, 4 h, er, 5 bbs, 6 ks, 4 SVs, 1.13 era.

6 different hitters pounded out 7 hits, including Caleb Stewart's solo shot in the 6th to tie the game. 3 Mets went hitless, Jose Coronado (0 for 3, BB, .250), Dan Murphy (0 for 4, .319), and Ambi Concepcion (rf) 0 for 4, K, .243). Mike Carp missed his 4th straight game with a rib cage strain (thanks to "MRCONSTRUCTIVECRITICISM" on NYFS for that tidbit).

Fernando Martinez (cf) 1 for 4, RBI, .277
Nick Evans (1b) 1 for 4, .291
Caleb Stewart (lf) 1 for 4, run, HR, RBI, 2 Ks, .243
Jon Malo (dh) 1 for 4, run, .216
Emmanuel Garcia (2b) 1 for 3, run, .190
Rafael Arroyo (c) 2 for 2, run, 2b, RBI, .243
Bobby Parnell 7 IP, 5 H, 2 ER, 3 Ks, 5.27 era, W (3-2), 13:5:3
Eddie Kunz IP, H, BB, 2 Ks, 3.24 era, SV (7)

St. Lucie 0, Vero Beach 1

Dillon Gee deserves better then his fate over the last 3 weeks. He's pitched lights out baseball, last 4 GS: 25.2 ip, 26 h, 7 er, bb, 24 ks, 2-2, 2.45 era. And yet, he's only 2-2 over that span. And that continued tonight, he took the loss despite allowing just a run on 5 hits over 7 innings.

That would be because the Mets were 2 hit, with DJ Wabick and Sean McCraw having 2 singles. Everyone else took 0-fers for the Mets, who dropped to 8-29.

Ezequiel Carrera (cf) 0 for 4, K, .245
Lucas Duda (1b) 0 for 3, BB, K, .296
DJ Wabick (lf) 1 for 4, .278
Ruben Tejada (ss) 0 for 3, .220
Sean McCraw (c) 1 for 2, BB, .151
Dillon Gee 7 IP, 5 H, ER, BB, 8 Ks, 4.03 era, L (2-4)
Nick Abel IP, H, K, 13.50 era

Savannah 6, Asheville 2

Scott Moviel rounds out the trio of righties who've been flying under the radar doing well lately. Over Moviel's last 3 GS, he's put up: 17 ip, 17 h, 7 er, 6 bbs, 18 ks, 2-0, 3.71 era. Tonight, he went 6, allowing 2 runs on 6 hits, while striking out 7. John Holdzkom and Julio Polanco finished out the game for the Gnats, who moved to 15-22 with the win.

The big blows game in back to back batters in the bottom of the 8th, when Michael Parker hit a 2 run single, and Richard Lucas blasted a 2 run homer, turning a 2-2 game into a 6-2 lead. They were among the 6 Gnats who had hits, with Francisco Pena having the only multi-hit game. Greg Veloz (0 for 5, K, .232), Casey Craig (0 for 4, BB, .436), and Jose Jimenez (0 for 3, run, 2 Ks, .218) took 0-fers.

Richard Pena (cf) 1 for 2, run, 3 BBs, .254
Jordan Abruzzo (dh) 1 for 4, 2 Ks, .324
Francisco Pena (c) 2 for 4, K, .282

Matt Bouchard (ss) 1 for 3, K, .230
Scott Moviel 6 IP, 6 H, 2 ER, 7 Ks, 6.75 era
John Holdzkom 2 IP, 2 H, BB, K, 8.16 era, W (2-1)

Willie Collazo got the spot start in place of Claudio Vargas today, giving the Mets another option for Wednesday's spot start in the majors. He pitched very well, going 7, only allowing 3 runs and 6 hits, but took a ND.

The Zs managed just 7 hits, with all their offense (ready for this?) coming off an ANDERSON HERNANDEZ 3 run homer. That's right. It was his only hit, though. Argenis Reyes and Mike Nickeas had multi-hit games, while 4 players took 0-fers. Michel Abreu (0 for 4, BB, K, .243), Jesus Feliciano (0 for 5, K, .348), Victor Mendez (0 for 3, BB, .271) and Anderson Machado (0 for 2, run, .149)

St. Lucie 0, Vero Beach 1, 13 innings

A classic pitchers duel, with Ryan Coultas giving up the winning run in the 13th. Coultas did not retire a single batter in the 13th, allowing 4 straight hitters to reach, with the help of an error. He allowed a leadoff single, then Luis Rivera (2b) muffed a bunt, throwing it away. An IBB followed then a walkoff single. It was an ugly night for both offenses, the Mets were 4 hit, and 6 players took 0-fers. Ezequiel Carrera (0 for 4, BB, 2 Ks, .252), Luis Rivera (0 for 6, .250), Lucas Duda (0 for 5, 3 Ks, .302), Josh Petersen (0 for 5, 2 Ks) DJ Wabick (0 for 5, K, .279), and Jason Jacobs (0 for 3, 2 BBs, K, .261). Ruben Tejada had the only multi hit game, he went 2 for 5, and is batting .224 now. He's got a very modest 3 game hitting streak, 4 for 10 in the 3 games. Leivi Ventura and JR Voyles had the other Met hits. The Mets fell to a season-low 20 games under .500 at 8-28.

Maikel Cleto was cruising through 5, then a couple of walks leading off the 6th, followed by an error, opened the floodgates for a 3 run inning. Brant Rustich and Jose Bierd finished off the game.

5/11 Minor League Report! Sanchez, Stoner!

New Orleans 5, Sacratomatoe 6

Joselo Diaz made his first start in 13 days, and it went about as well as his last one. He lasted 3 innings today, surrendering 5 runs on 4 hits and 5 walks, he's now walked 23 in 31.1 innings. Tim McNab, Nate Field and Carlos Muniz delievered 6 innings of shutout relief, giving the Zs a chance to come back and tie, but then Muniz allowed his first run of the season (in the 10th) after 17 scoreless, and he took the loss. Most of the offense came from Val Pascucci, who homered and drove in 4. 4 players took 0-fers, Fernando Tatis (0 for 3, 2 BBs, .244), Chris Aguila (0 for 4, BB, .281), Anderson Hernandez (0 for 4, 3 Ks, .197) and Mike Nickeas (0 for 3, BB, .208). It was Jose Sanchez today who had a very good start for the Mets, he went 6 innings, allowing 2 hits and a run, and the Mets gave him just enough offense to get his 3rd win of the season. Eude Brito and Eddie Kunz finished off the game, with Kunz picking up his 6th save.

5 Mets had hits, and 3 went hitless (Caleb Stewart (0 for 3, .242), Emmanuel Garcia (0 for 3, BB, K, .187), Saloman Manriquez (0 for 3, K, .204)). Mike Carp didn't play for the 2nd game in a row. He was pulled in the 8th inning of the game on the 8th vs Reading, and has not appeared since.

St. Lucie 5, Fort Myers 7

Very quietly, not with the hype of a Jon Niese or Bobby Parnell, or the "notice factor" of a Angel Calero or Michael Antonini, Tobi Stoner is putting together a very nice first 4 starts for the Mets. He's 1-2, but he's got a 2.66 era, allowed a hit per innings, and has a BB/K ratio of 4/21 in 20.1 innings. He's 23 1/2 years old, a bit old for high A, but if he keeps pitching like this, he should be in Binghamton before too long. Today, he went 6 innings, allowing 5 hits and 2 runs (1 earned), with 1 walk and 5 Ks. Ryan Coultas allowed an unearned run, and then Corey Hoorelbeke allowed 4 runs (2 earned) and 6 hits over his 1.2 innings, taking the loss.

Every regular had a hit for St. Lucie, and Luis Rivera, Lucas Duda and JR Voyles recorded had multi-hit games.

Ezequiel Carrera (cf) 1 for 5, K, .258
Luis Rivera (2b) 2 for 4, run, .273
Lucas Duda (1b) 2 for 5, 2 runs, 2b, K, .313

5/10 Minor League Report! NANDO, NIESE, ANTONINI!

Tonight's Song: Rolling Stones - Sympathy for the Devil

New Orleans 6, Sacratomato 0 (viva la Somers!)

Adam Bostick was pulled after 3 innings, no reason given. We do have another doubleheader inside of this week, so it could be that. He allowed 1 hit and struck out 2. Ivan Maldonado went the next 3, allowing 3 hits while striking out 3 to pick up the win, the Zs 4th in a row, they're now 20-16.

The top 4 in the Zs order (Argenis Reyes, Jesus Feliciano, Michel Abreu and Val Pascucci) went 7 for 17 with 2 runs and 2 RBI. They scored 3 in the 2nd, and didn't look back.

Jon Niese took a tough loss tonight, but the good news is he bounced back after back to back disasterous outings. Over his last 2 starts, Niese had done this: 8.2 ip, 12 h, 11 er, 8/7 bb/k, 0-2, 11.42 era. Well, he reversed that tonight, going 6 innings, allowing just 2 hits and a run.

Fernando Martinez had 3 of the Mets 6 hits, all singles. Jose Coronado, Caleb Stewart and Ambi Concepcion had the other 3 hits. Everyone else took 0-fers.

Fernando Martinez (cf) 3 for 4, .277
Jose Coronado (ss) 1 for 4, K, .252

Eric Niesen had nothing tonight, giving up 6 hits )(2 homers) and 6 runs (4 earned) over 1.2 innings, including a pair of 2 run bombs in the first. After that, the Mets never did recover, losing their 6th game in 7, and falling to a new season low 19 games under .500 at 8-27.

DJ Wabick and Ruben Tejada had multi hit games, while 4 players took 0-fers, Luis Rivera (0 for 3, RBI, K, .258), Lucas Duda (0 for 4, 2 Ks, .309), Jason Jacobs (0 for 2, BB, K, .279), Jamar Hill (0 for 3, run, BB, 3 Ks, .250)

A day after not scoring for Angel Calero, the Gnats pounded out 12 hits and 9 runs for Michael Antonini, who won his 3rd game. Antonini fired 6 innings of 5 hit shutout ball, walking 1 and striking out 3, lowering his ERA to 2.76. Pretty good battle of the lefties going on between Antonini and Calero (poor Angel, he's 0-4 with an ERA about half a run lower). Josh Stinson picked up a save (the ridiculous 3 inning save rule), allowing 2 hits and walking 3 over 3 innings.

It was the 4-5-6 of the Gnats that did the most damage. Jose Jimenez, Joqauin Rodriguez and Jacob Elgsti combined to go 7 for 12 with 5 runs, a homer and 6 RBI. Every Gnat except Dan Stegall had a hit, Stegall went 0 for 4, 2 Ks, .192.
