Tonight's song: Smashing Pumpkins - 1979
New Orleans 5, Portland 9
Brian Stokes had a brutal outing for the 2nd start in his last 3 (3.1 ip, 9 h, 11 er on 4/22) - this one was markedly worse. He only got one out and gave up 4 hits, 3 walks, and 6 runs. So, for the second time inside of a week, the Zs bullpen had to be supremely stretched out. Tim McNab pitched another 3.2 innings of effective long relief, allowing a run on 4 hits, but Nate Field put the game back out of reach by allowing 2 in his 2 innings of work.
Despite putting up 5 runs and 8 hits, 4 Zs took 0-fers, making it hard to put up any crooked numbers. Argenis Reyes (0 for 5, 2 Ks, .250), Michel Abreu (0 for 4, .250), Anderson Machado (0 for 4, K, .196) and Mike Nickeas (0 for 3, BB, K, .213) all had no hits, while Brady Clark, Val Pascucci and Fernando Tatis had multi-hit games. The Zs are now 16-14.

LOL again. 33 runs given up in 2 games by the Binghamton pitching staff. Jacob Ruckle was the main culprit today, surrendering 9 hits and 8 runs in 1.2 innings. Salvador Aguilar was pitching excellent long relief (3.1 innings, 1 hit), but then he got touched up for 4 hits and 5 runs in the 6th. All in all, a two game stretch to forget about.
Fernando broke out with 3 hits (all singles), and so did Jose Coronado (2 hits and a walk). Both had been slumping, Coronado much more so then Martinez. Dan Murphy also had 2 hits, and 4 players took 0-fers. Nick Evans (0 for 3, BB, .318), Mike Carp (0 for 3, BB, K, .351), Caleb Stewart (0 for 4, K, .333), and Saloman Manriquez (0 for 4, .218). The Mets are now 11-19.

Eric Niesen was pitching the best game of his pro career, a 2 hit shutout thru 5, but after allowing a walk and hit in the 6th, he was pulled for Ryan Coultas, who allowed both runners to score, and then 2 more of his own. Tim Stronach came in and allowed 1 of Coultas' runners to score, so it ended up being a 5 run 6th for the Tigers, turning a 3-0 Met lead into a 5-3 deficit.
Ezequiel Carrera once more was the ignitor with a multi-hit game (his 4th in the last 5 games, 9 for 21, 6 runs, 3 2b, 3b, 2 BBs, K, CS over that span). DJ Wabick and Jamar Hill also had multi-hit games for the Mets, who after winning 5 of 6, have now lost 2 straight, falling to 7-23 on the year. Ruben Tejada (0 for 4, K, .215) and Sean McCraw (0 for 2, .143) took 0-fers.
Ezequiel Carrera (cf) 2 for 4, run, 2b, .278

It was the Angel Calero show for the Gnats, Calero had the best outing of his pro career, delivering 7 innings of 2 hit shutout ball, striking out 3, and lowering his ERA to a miniscule 2.32. As was pointed out in the Minor League Thread on NYFS, Calero's having a very good season, if you can ignore the 10 unearned runs (which would make his RA 5.23). How'd you like to be Angel Calero, anyway? He's 0-4 with a 2.32 era.
The Gnats scored 2 in the top of the 9th, the RBI went to Jose Jimenez and Richard Lucas. 4 Gnats took 0-fers, Matt Bouchard (0 for 5, K, .189), Michael Parker (0 for 3, .125), Jordan Abruzzo (0 for 4, K, .338) and Dan Stegall (0 for 4, K, .195), while 2 had multihit games, Francisco Pena and Richard Lucas. The Gnats are 12-18 now.
Casey Craig (lf, rf) 1 for 3, BB, .500
Francisco Pena (c) 3 for 4, run, 2b, .272
Jose Jimenez (1b) 1 for 4, run, 2b, RBI, K, .204
Richard Lucas (3b) 2 for 4, RBI, K, .211
Angel Calero 7 IP, 2 H, 3 Ks, 2.32 era
Jose Bierd 2 IP, H, 2 BBs, 1.38 era, W (1-0)
