CBS Sportsline's Eric Mack...a complete moron

Top 5 Mets prospects according to this idiot:

1. Phil Humber ( Solid season after Tommy John surgery, but may start in Triple-A.)
2. Deolis Guerra ( His ability to hold his own in high Class A portends big things now.)
3. Kevin Mulvey ( Solid year puts him in the mix for look in 2008, or perhaps as trade bait.)
4. Brett Harper ( Good power, but age-level ratio doesn't give him much of a chance.)
5. Fernando Martinez ( Young Dominican signee looks like a bust, but still scouts favorite.)

Link to article

I wish we could use emoticons here, he'd get a whole bunch of  and :eyeroll: out of me. Not only is ranking Brett Harper our 4th best prospect stupid, but saying Fernando looks like a bust at the ripe old age of 18 in AA just might be one of the stupidest things anyone's ever said about baseball. Officially, our system has "graudated" Gomez and Pelfrey. I'd rank our top 10 this way:

1. Phil Humber
2. Fernando Martinez
3. Deolis Guerra
4. Kevin Mulvey
5. Jon Niese
6. Bobby Parnell
7. Mike Carp
8. Nick Evans
9. Eddie Kunz
10. Francisco Pena/Brant Rustich

Prospect Focus: Lucas Duda

You asked, and admittedly, I was curious. So here it is:
-------------

Lucas Duda is a 6'4/225 first baseman the Mets drafted in the 7th round (243rd overall) of the 2007 draft.

He got sporadic playing time in his freshman year at USC, only 77 ABs in 34 games. He hit just .208 with a .322 OBP and .299 SLG. We can throw those numbers out the window due to the lack of consistent PT.

In 2006, his sophomore season, he played everyday, getting 191 ABs in 56 games. He hit much better, .298/.391/.398, but with a decided lack of power. He only showed a 1/63.66 HR/AB rate, and had just 12 XBH in 191 ABs. He did, however, show a very good eye at the plate, with a 0.82352 BB/K ratio (walks per strikeout).

In 2007, Duda again played everyday, and hit .280/.378/.468, showing a burgeoning power stroke, increasing his HR/AB ratio to 1/26.57. He had 18 XBH in 186 ABs, with the increase in HR (4) and triples (2) driving his slugging higher. While in college, he had a 0.83333 BB/K ratio, virtually staying the same as in 2006.

In Brooklyn after getting drafted, Duda hit .299/.398/.462, vastly improving the number of doubles he hit. Duda hits lefty, and Keyspan park is death on left handed sluggers, so much so, that Mike Carp was sent to the GCL in 04, then Hagerstown in 05, skipping the deathly confines of Keyspan.

Duda, however, thrived at Keyspan. He hit 20 doubles, 3 triples and 4 homers in 234 ABs. While his BB/K ratio did decline slightly from his USC 07 season, from 0.83333 to 0.75, it was more then offset by the 19 point increase in average. If you take out the 3 IBBs he got, his BB/K ratio drops to 0.68888, which is still very solid.

Duda's Brooklyn splits are very interesting, as far as lefty/righty goes. Versus lefties, Duda hit .342/.405/.605/1.010 with 7 2b and 1 HR in 38 ABs. He struck out 11 times and walked 3 times. Versus righties he batted .296/.401/.436/.837 with 12 2b, 2 3b and 3 HR in 179 ABs. He struck out 27 times and walked 28 times. We'll have to see if this trend continues at the higher levels, but so far, it is extremely promising. His K rate vs LHP was very high at .289, but the sample size (38 ABs) is too low to draw many conclusions. His K rate vs RHP was .151.

Duda's our 3rd best first base prospect, and 4th best corner infield prospect (3rd base is kind of filled for the foreseeable future). I would probably rank Duda somewhere between 9 and 15 on our prospect lists.

THE FUTURE: Duda should be opening his first full season in St. Lucie, manning first base for a completely new look Mets infield. Duda, at least so far in his pro career, has shown the ability to handle lefthanders. If this trend continues in St. Lucie, and Carp/Murphy scuffle in Binghamton vs LHP, Duda might vault all the way to the top spot in corner infielders. But that's a long long way off. For now, Duda fans should focus on his developing power, and his ability to control the strike zone.

10/22 Carp and Calero Report

:eyeroll:

Gotta love winter baseball. Carp is the only Met in action today.

He went 2 for 5 with a double and 2 RBI, and is hitting .256 on the season. More importantly, he is hitting .300 (3 for 10) versus lefties.

Edit: Magallanes game final, alliteration is the word of the day. Cs are wild.

Angel Calero 0.2 ip

Emmanuel Garcia

Has been just white hot in Hawaii. But really, it's been going on for alot longer then that. From June 1st to August 31st, he hit ..285/.361/.342/.703. As you can see, the only thing "holding him back" is a decided lack of power. He did not hit 1 homer in 488 ABs at St. Lucie. And struck out 103 times, a .211 strikeout rate. What's extremely impressive about him is, in 2006 between Kingsport (a ROOKIE league) and Brooklyn (short season A ball), he struck out at a .211 rate, as well. So the jump all the way to high A did not result in a higher strikeout rate. Also, this season, his BB/K ratio was 0.6116 (dividing BBs by Ks), while last year, it was 0.5926, so he actually showed an improvement in that measure of plate discipline. Again, very impressive jumping 2 leagues the way he did.

His splits in St. Lucie as far as lefty/righty show that he hit marginally better versus LHP. He hit .263/.338/.316/.654 vs LHP, with 7 2b in 133 ABs, and a 15/28 BB/K ratio (0.5357), while hitting .257/.337/.297/.635 vs RHP, with 5 2b and 5 3b in 360 ABs, and a 46/75 BB/K ratio (0.6133). While I do not have his splits during his hot streak, you can probably add 20-30 points to each category and be fairly safe, as a guesstimate.

He's 6'2/188, so there is still some room to fill out that frame and develop some power.

Oh, and in Hawaii, in 53 ABs, he's got 20 hits, a .377 average, an 8/3 BB/K ratio, a .468 OBP and .547 SLG. 5 2b and 2 3b, and 8 steals.

I'd say he's our top middle infield prospect, simply due to the fact that there is some upside here, whereas there is no upside with Anderson Hernandez.

THE FUTURE: Garcia, knowing the Mets, will be in Binghamton next season. However, I would give him 6 weeks in St. Lucie, let him really tear it apart, then promote him. It wouldn't hurt his plate discipline, either, to slow down his trek through the system. Garcia's ceiling is probably comparable to a Luis Castillo type, someone who won't hit for a whole lot (if any) power, but should hit alot of doubles (which would've been singles) and triples (which should've been doubles), and steal you quite a few bases.

MPH Mailbag #6

Brant Rustich has some nasty stuff, and the only problem with him as been control.. But now recovered from a finger injury he has found his control in brooklyn and it really showed in his stats.. Some scouts even rank him over Eddie Kunz whats your view on Rustich and whats his ETA?

Tejesh: Both should open 2008 in Binghamton, and after that, it's who pitches better. I'd say a year in Binghamton, then they'll be ready, so 2009 would be my ETA for them.

There are a lot of Japanese Players that will be eligidable for FA this year Fuku Koji and some others and as soon as these guys sign they will be considered Prospects so I guess this question counts... Who is the Japanese guy you would like to see on the Mets?

Tejesh: Relievers. Iwase, or anyone else. David knows much more about the Japanese FAs then I do, it's a question of getting him to answer a mailbag question ;)

Have you given up on Anderson Hernandez ever learning to hit MLB pitching?

Tejesh: No. But I've given up on the Mets giving him a chance. We've found our 2b for the future (assuming we don't get ARod) - it's Ruben Gotay.

Who's a better fit for the bullpen next year Mike Pelfrey or Philip Humber?

Tejesh: Pelfrey will and should be given the 5th starters job out of spring, so Humber will or should be in the pen.

Charlie from Long Island
----------------------

I thought I would change it up a little... With a weak free agent class it might be wise to look at the trade market (of the people reportedly available the most intriguing to me are Damaso Marte, Orlando Hudson, Bronson Arroyo, and Kelly Shoppach). If the Mets were to expore the trade market, who would you identify as good candidates to move? Any prospects you think it would be wise to sell high on?

Andy

Tejesh: Anderson Hernandez, but I don't know what you'd get back. Kevin Mulvey is someone I'd move in the right trade. The problem is, Pelfrey right now is slotted in as the default #5 starter, and honestly, I'd rather him then Silva, or any of the other equally mediocre starters on the FA market. I wouldn't target a starter via trade. Or a reliever, unless you're getting one who you control for a few years (Cordero, Rauch) or a young catcher (Flores, Shoppach). Honestly, if we could kill two or three birds with one stone, I'd look into what it would cost to get Cordero, Rauch and Flores, in one fell swoop. Probably more then I'd be willing to give up, but if it cost say Pelfrey, Mulvey, Carp/Evans, Parnell/Niese, AHern and cash (say, picking up a bad one year contract from them) - I might bite.

MPH Mailbag Volume 5: Hope following Disaster

With the late season collapse (was that real, or just my own personal nightmare?), it is obvious that some major changes need to be made. The bullpen is in shambles... what was always a weak unit that overachieved for two thirds of the season, seemed to be exposed late in the season by the lack of a true innings eater in the rotation.

Looking to the next year, I am feeling a little distressed. Mota and Schoenweiss are both owed big bucks next year, so I guess we will have to stomach them again next year. Who knows which Feliciano and Sosa will show up next year? Joe Smith didn't exactly look dominate (or even competent) in the second half. Heilman and Wagner both put up fine numbers this year, but seemed to choke at the worst moments possible. From the current projected starting rotation, it seems doubtful that we can expect 200 innings from Pedro, Maine, Perez, Hernandez, or Pelfrey. It looks like a formula to repeat this disastrous finish. Changes need to be made.

The names I've come across among the free agent class and rumored trade bait do not excite me. So, where do we turn? Is there any help on the way from the farm system? Is there reason to believe that Duaner Sanchez, Padilla, or Burgos can contribute anything next year after major arm trouble this year? In the meltdown in September, we didn't see much of Muniz or Collazo, can either emerge next year? Will Pelfrey, Humber, or Mulvey come into their own and emerge as our savior? Please, give me some reason to be hopeful.

Andy

Tejesh: Andy, everything looks bleak right now. Trust me. Gaining some perspective on this disaster (and I wish it was a nightmare, but sadly, it really did happen) - will do us all a great service. Right now, there can't be too many Met fans who are thinking rationally or objectively. Me included. (written on 10/1 - the day after)

Quite honestly, the recurring theme the past few weeks as everything fell apart was "how could this happen?" and the answer was "I don't know." I have no answers as to how, or why, or what happened. I'm lost, stunned, depressed, and disgusted.

However - I say you're wrong with your assessment of next season's pitching staff. Mota most assuredly will be gone (he better fucking be gone). Have you seen Show's numbers as a lefty specialist? 0-2, 0.68 era, 64 games, 26.1 ip, 19 h, 2 er, 11 bbs, 21 ks. If Willie could ever figure out how to properly use him (for a string of 2 or 3 lefties, with a righty sandwiched in), and not use him against righties by choice - we'd have a plus reliever on our hands.

Wagner and Heilman are locks for the pen next year. Feliciano and Smith should be as well, and Show. That's 5 good relievers, used properly. Smith with a full season under his belt should not succumb to what befell him this season.

The bullpen needs a drastic overhaul, throw money at Izzy, Cordero and/or Linebrink, and perhaps one of the Japanese closers, if you can get them to agree to a 1 year incentive laden deal with an option to send them to the minors if they suck the big one, and a 3 year MLB option worth serious money if they don't suck the big one.

John Maine also should benefit greatly from pitching a full season, and I wouldn't discount his last start, 7.2 ip, 1 h, 2 bbs, 14 Ks is ridiculous considering he looked GASSED for two months. Oliver Perez took monumental strides forward this season, these 2 are the bridge to the future, much like Wright, Reyes and Milledge are for the offense.

We don't need a savior. We need consistency. A full season of Pedro, a full season tested Maine, a Perez who's turned the corner...that is a formidable 1-2-3 punch for any rotation. Duque as a 4, and Pelfrey/Humber as a 5 is good.

But, Andy, the biggest disappointment this season is one you didn't name. Jose Reyes. I don't know what happened, but whatever it was, he was a void in September, and that was about 75% of what befell us.

We'll have hopefully a contrite and hungry Reyes next year, a firey Milledge everyday, and Alou for 80-100 games. Unless we sign ARod if he opts out, I don't see where the offensive upgrades are coming from.

So basically, the team is coming back as is, but hopefully with 2 mmonumental upgrades in over Sele and Mota (Sosa? and) If you say no to Sosa, then you sign Cordero/Linebrink/Iwase/other Japanese closers (pick 2).

This team doesn't need much. A few better bullpen arms, a full season of Pedro, and away you go.

Hi guys,

First, I went to the site to get the Wakiki Beachboys link - Thanks Tej for putting it there.

Second, there's a poll on there about you guys taking an offer.... um... what's the offer? I can't vote if I don't know, and I didn't see anything that made it clear what it was.

Thirdly, I check out your site about twice a month, and I gotta tell you... I like the use of the mailbag to help generate content. Great idea. Is it taking off?

Best,
Rachel Laudiero
Content Manager/NYFS
(Calli)

Tejesh: Heyyyyyy Rachel! I see how it is - we pimp NYFS and you pimp MPH, lol.

Well, the offer was for us to take over the Mets blog for the MVN (Most Valuable Network) - but David wanted to start his school year first, and he's really overwhelmed with that, so we've decided not to do it.

It's sort of taking off with the mailbag, but we started it so late in the season...I think we're doing pretty well for a) not having a clue and b) being less then a full year in. Overall, for just being one year in, I'd say we've made enormous strides.

Thanks for stopping by, Rachel. Keep on rockin NYFS ;)

The MVN offer...

That's been put on the backburner for now. We're not sure if we're ever going to do that, actually. Just wanted to give you guys a heads up.

My thoughts on the "celebration" discussion

And what part, if any, it played in the downfall of the 2007 Mets:

WHO CARES?!?!?!?!?!??!?!?!?!?

If the 2007 New York Mets couldn't beat a fired up LAST PLACE FLORIDA MARLINS TEAM or FOURTH PLACE WASHINGTON NATIONALS TEAM - then GO HOME. End of story.

You had to beat two of the worst teams in baseball to prevent an utter collapse of epic proportions, no matter if they were two of the most fired up worst teams in baseball - and YOU. SPIT. THE. BIT.

Wasn't the 27 Yankees, or the 98 Yankees, or the 96 Braves, or the 05 White Sox. Was the 07 Marlins, and 07 Nationals - and you couldn't beat them.

End of story.

The mailbag will be posted in a week or so, most likely on Sunday. It deals with hope for the future, and I think, and I say this in my answer, things will never look as bleak as they do right now. There are still times (3 days later) that I want to gut the entire team and just start over, but that's insanity. So I want to gain some perspective on what happened before I answer that question. But rest assured, barring Omar gutting the farm for a quick fix - there IS help on the way. I never thought I'd say this (even though I agreed with both of these picks) - but Kunz and Rustich are at the most 3/4 of the 08 season away.

MPH Mailbag Volume 4

Usually Anderson Hernandez goes to winter ball hits about .400 wins a batting title then comes back to the states and shows he can't hit at all, but this year was different he hit over .300 and had an amazing second half. Will Anderson Hernandez now 24 years old ever learn to hit MLB pitching?

Tejesh: Not sure he'll get the chance with us. Ruben Gotay's passed him on the depth chart (with good reason). I'd trade Hernandez while I could.

Carlos Gomez or Lastings Milledge?

Tejesh: Uhhhhhh

Uhhhhh

Uhhhhh

Uhhhhhhhhhhhhh

Ummmmmmmmmmmmmmm

Gomez. Barely.

Humber For Chad Cordero? yes or no

Tejesh: Straight up? In a nanosecond. Adding anything of value? No.

Any guys you think will burst onto the prospect radar next year?

Tejesh: The "main" prospect radar? Or the "OCD prospect radar?" I'll assume you mean the main prospect radar.

I think Bobby Parnell is still not a household name as far as prospects go, so I'll go with him, and Jon Niese.

As far as the "OCD prospect radar" (for guys like me, David, etc...), I'm going to go with...well...I mean we've got 6 rosters memorized. There's not much in the system we don't know about! Pedro Zapata (OFer with the VSL Mets), Gabriel Zavala (OFer with the GCL Mets), Ruben Tejada (IFer with the GCL Mets), Juan Lagares (IFer with the Savannah Gnats) are 4 guys I think will make their way onto the top 20 lists.

Charlie from Long Island

--------------------------------

What is your ETA for Kevin Mulvey?

Tejesh: Mid 2008. It is telling that of the three advanced pitching prospects, Mulvey's the one who has had the best introduction to the AAA level.

Do you think Eddie Kunz can be a major leaguer in 2008?

Tejesh: Maybe at the tail end, during September callups. He's got the stuff, but the command is a question, as is the stamina (witness Joe Smith)

Do you think Fernando Martinez sees any time with the Mets in 08? Maybe even just a cup of coffee?

Tejesh: No, simply because if they don't need him on the 40 man, he won't be put on it.

What prospects can take rosters spots for the mets in 08?

Tejesh: I think Joe Smith will lockdown a spot in the bullpen, Lastings Milledge gets RF/LF, and Carlos Gomez will split time/fill in for Moises Alou when Alou takes his traditional 4-5 weeks for injuries. Mike Pelfrey should get the 5th spot in the rotation, and I'd honestly take a hard look at Philip Humber in the bullpen. If we don't resign Castillo/sign ARod/get a 2b, Ruben Gotay should get the bulk of the time at 2b, assuming we can find a RH platoon partner for him. Or convince him to give up switch hitting.

Stephen from Brooklyn
