Binghamton 6, Akron 3
While the big league club continues to spank the rival Phillies, the Binghamton Mets went on to beat the Akron Aeros by a score of 6 to 3. Even though Bingo only put up 6 runs, they had a pretty huge offensive output from the top prospects on the team. Fernando Martinez broke out of his early season slump, going 2 for 4 with a couple of XBH(2b, HR), upping his average to around the .192(which shows how bad his slump has been so far during the first week of the season). Gotta love Fernando showing that power, hopefully this will be the start of his hugely important season, this is when he needs to show the brass of the Mets that he should be firmly in their plans for the big league 2009 season. The Bash Bros.™, Mike Carp and Nick Evans, continued tearing the cover off the ball, going a combined 5 for 8. Carp his 3rd(yes, 3rd, in 7 games) home run. He also racked up his 6th, 7th, and 8th RBI's of the season, while upping his average to an awesome .409. Nick Evans went 2 for 3 with a walk, 2 runs, and a triple. His average on the season is now .304. Eddie Kunz pitched 1.1 perfect innings for the save.
St. Lucie 10, Brevard County 1(8th inning)
The kids down in High-A kept the offensive explosion by the Mets organization going tonight. Highlighting the offense was Ruben Tejada having a breakout game of his own, going 2 for 5, scoring 1 run and driving in 2 others. Tejada flashed his plus speed and power, clubbing his 2nd double of the season and hitting a triple(he was actually called out on a close play at the plate trying to stretch the triple into an ITPHR). Tejada's average is up to .188 after today. Ezequiel Carrera, St. Lucie's leadoff man, went 2 for 4 with 2 runs, a walk and an RBI. Lucas Duda continued his hot hitting, going 1 for 3 with 2 runs, hitting his 3rd double of the season and taking his average up to .296. With Evans and Carp a level ahead of Duda, up at Binghamton, I suspect Duda will get a full season at High-A St. Lucie to prove he is the legit prospect we here at MPH think he is. If Carp or Evans get called up to New Orleans at some point this season, then maybe Duda will get some time in AA towards the end of the year. On the mound tonight for St. Lucie was Dylan Owen. Owen, coming off a dominating Senior season in college and Pro debut in Brooklyn last season, continued his domination tonight. Dylan threw 6 innings of shutout ball, giving up only 5 hits and striking out 6. He walked no one, displaying the outstanding control he maintained all of last season. He is in line for his first win at High-A.
Either Tej or I will be back later with full boxscores for both of the late games.
Update-St. Lucie score is final, 10-1. Owen is now 1-1 on the season.
