New Orleans 3, Memphis 2, in 10 innings
Wow - Adam Bostick. This could be a hot start, or it could be him finding it, but his first two starts this year have been very good. 5 ip, er his first time out, and this one, which tops it. 7 innings, 6 hits, 2 earned, 2 walks and 5 Ks. Tough luck ND, but Nawlins was facing the unhittable Joel Pineiro (oh the agony...the horror...). Tim McNab and Nate Field pitched 3 scoreless in relief, Field got the win when Nawlins scored 1 in the 10th on a Michel Abreu 2b.

Jon Niese pitched brilliantly for 6 innings, allowing a run on just 2 hits, while walking one and striking out 5. Through 2 starts, Niese's ERA is a sparkling 0.82. However, Edgar Alfonzo surrendered 2 runs in the 7th to blow the win for Niese. German Marte (who gets no love at all but should) finished out the game with 1.2 scoreless. On offense, the BMets tallied 10 hits, but just 2 runs. The top 3 in the order (FMart, Garcia, Murphy) went 1 for 13 with 3 Ks, but the 4-5 hitters (Evans, Carp) were 4 for 6 with a run scored, 3 2b, HR, RBI, BB. In all, 4 players had multi-hit games, Evans, Carp, Coronado, and Concepcion.
Fernando Martinez (cf) 0 for 5, .136
Emmanuel Garcia (2b) 0 for 4, K, .200
Dan Murphy (3b) 1 for 4, 2 Ks, .400
Nick Evans (1b) 2 for 3, 2 2b, BB, .250
Mike Carp (dh) 2 for 3, run, 2b, HR, RBI, .333
Jose Coronado (ss) 2 for 4, 2b, .333
Ambi Concepcion (rf) 2 for 4, 2 2b, RBI, .263
Jon Niese 6 IP, 2 H, ER, BB, 5 Ks, HR, 0.82 era, 8:5:5
Edgar Alfonzo 1.1 IP, 3 H, 2 ER, 2 Ks, 2 HR, 4.91 era, L (0-1), BS (1)
German Marte 1.2 IP, 3 H, 0.00 era
Jon Niese is so good. I think he, like John Maine, might have IT. That intangible quality you just can't put into words, but you know it's there. Good to see Evans have a breakout game early, and better to see Carpie keep up his hot start. Evans has 3 2b this year, Carp's got a pair of 2b and HRs. I've said it before - you'd have one hellova platoon with them. Too bad we're signing Mark Teixeira ;)
St. Lucie 4, Brevard County 7
Gary Bakker is so not good. 0.2 ip, 6 er and a very unsparkling 23.63 era. And he's 25. There isn't a younger pitcher who could be in St. Lucie right now starting? Bakker sucks, plain and simple. He's no good. The story of the game, though, is Dirty pitching 2 innings. He allowed 2 hits while striking out three, and has a 4.50 era through 3 appearances. He's pitched on the 4th, 6th, and now 8th. The next step, whenever it happens, will be pitching back to back days, and 3 of 4 or 4 of 5 days. I hope they take it slowly with him, we really really need him (I still have full faith and confidence in Aaron Heilman - hasn't anyone noticed he usually starts off abysmally? Then picks it up in the 2nd half?). Errr...minor leagues, right...
Ezequiel Carrera, Lucas Duda and Leivi Ventura had multi-hit games. Duda may look like a lady, but he can hit. Sean McCraw, Josh Thole took 0-fers.
Ezequiel Carrera (cf) 2 for 5, 3b, K, .292
Ruben Tejada (ss) 1 for 5, K, .148
Hector Pellot (2b) 1 for 5, 2 runs, K, .192
Lucas Duda (1b) 2 for 3, 2 runs, HR, 2 RBI, BB, .292
Brahiam Maldonado (lf) 1 for 4, .200
Sean McCraw (dh) 0 for 3, BB, K, .222
Gary Bakker 0.2 IP, 3 H, 6 ER, 2 BBs, K, 23.63 era, L (0-2)
Tim Stronach 3.1 IP, 4 H, ER, 3 Ks, 2.70 era
Dirty 2 IP, 2 H, 3 Ks, 4.50 era
Stephen Clyne 2 IP, 3 Ks, 0.00 era
Funny story - I was actually asked on NYFS why Duaner Sanchez' nickname is dirty. How do you explain that? I mean really, what's proper protocol there?
As a bonus, follow this LINK for a video of Duaner pitching tonight in St. Lucie. Hope you enjoy it.
Savannah 3, Charleston 7
Michael Antonini wasnt' quite as brilliant as his first outing when he went 6 no hit innings. In fact, it was the polar opposite. He lasted just 8 outs (2.2 innings for those mathamatically challenged), giving up 7 hits, 4 runs (3 earned) while walking 3 and only K-ing 1. Somehow, Dellan Betances on the other side (Yankees), walked 6 in 5.1 innings, but only gave up 2 runs in earning the win. 6 BBs and 8 Ks means he must've thrown a crapload of pitches in 5.1 innings.
On the offensive side, Greg Veloz was caught stealing home (for those keep score, he's now 1 for 2 trying that this year). Richard Pena had the only multi-hit game for the Gnats, who totalled 6 hits. Matt Bouchard made another error today, his FIFTH in 6 games. Are you kidding me? I could play shortstop better than that. I used the correct version of than/then, right?
Greg Veloz (2b) 1 for 4, BB, 2 Ks, .174, SB (5), CS (2)
Matt Bouchard (ss) 0 for 4, BB, 2 Ks, .208
Richard Lucas (3b) 1 for 3, run, 2b, BB, .182
Jose Jimenez (1b) 0 for 3, BB, 2 Ks, .211
Francisco Pena (c) 0 for 3, run, BB, 2 Ks, .263
Richard Pena (rf) 2 for 4, run, 2b, K, .238
Raul Reyes (cf) 1 for 4, RBI, K, .190
Michael Antonini 2.2 IP, 7 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 3 BBs, K, 3.12 era, L (1-1)
Edgar Ramirez 3.1 IP, 4 H, 2 ER, 3 Ks, HR, 5.40 era
Raul Reyes might strike out 250 times this year. He's already got 7 in 21 ABs. He's got tremendous raw power, but NO eye whatsoever. No one's got a higher average than Francisco Pena at .263, which is pretty sad, but it's early, although none of these guys have been rushed at all (for a change).
