4/20 Minor League Report! CARP, ALOU, Cleto!

New Orleans 1, Omaha 6

Ruddy Lugo had a rough outing today, though he was not helped out one bit by his defense (2 errors, one each on Anderson Machado and Shawn Wooten). In the end, Lugo gave up 10 hits and 6 runs (2 earned) over 6 innings. He walked one, struck out 5, and allowed a homer. Jose Santiago and Carlos Muniz each pitched a perfect inning with a K. Not much to speak of offensively for the Zs, they were 6 hit, and the only RBI went to Machado. AHern (0 for 3, BB, .197), Fernando Tatis (0 for 4, 3 Ks, .250), Shawn Wooten (0 for 3, BB, K, .100) and Mike Nickeas (0 for 4, 2 Ks, .158) took 0-fers.

Binghamton 2, Portland 13

Robert Paulk took it on the chin in the 8th inning today, getting blown apart for 9 hits and 8 runs in just 0.2 innings, turning a 5-2 game into a 13-2 game. Paulk's ERA is now a sterling 48.60. Jose Sanchez started the game and didn't pitch all that well, either, surrendering 8 hits and 3 runs in 5.1 innings.

Offensively, there were 2 players with multi-hit games, Mike Carp (who is the only member of the Trinity to have not significantly cooled off), and Ambiorix Concepcion. Jose Coronado (0 for 3, BB, K, .333), Nick Evans (0 for 3, BB, K, .338, 1 for his last 15, 8 Ks), Saloman Manriquez (0 for 4, 2 Ks, .234) and Josh Petersen (0 for 3, .342) took 0-fers for the BMets, who fell under .500, at 8-9.

St. Lucie 5, Palm Beach 10

Moises Alou rolled out of bed today, suited up for St. Lucie, and went 3 for 3 with a run and double. Is there any doubt he'd be a surefire 1st ballot HoFer if not for all the injuries throughout his career? He's 42 years old and shows no signs of slowing down (minus injuries). If he can get back and stay for the most important stretches of the year, the Mets should roll.

Anyway, onto the game. Dylan Owen didn't have such a good time of it, surrendering 3 runs and 4 hits in 4 innings. Such an outing would normally raise an ERA into the stratosphere this early, but his ERA still stands at a very respectable 2.70. Roy Merritt took the loss in relief with an absolute dismal outing, giving up 3 runs on 3 hits and 4 walks in 1.1 innings. Jonathan Castillo, the 4th Met pitcher, put the game out of reach by giving up 3 runs on 4 hits in his inning of work.

Offensively, Ruben Tejada continued his rampage, with 2 more hits, including another double, raising his average to .274. I still stand by my week 1 tirade about letting him torch the Sally League then promoting him, but what he's doing right now is more impressive. Remember, he's just 18 years old. Over his last dozen games, he is batting .333/.382/.431/.813 (17 for 51, 3 2b, 3b, 6 RBI, 4/7 BB/K). Lucas Duda also continued his rampage with 2 more hits, raising his average to .362. Over his last 9 games, he's batting .459/.524/.568/1.091 (17 for 37, 2b, HR, 10 RBI, 5/9 BB/K). Josh Thole also had a multi hit game for St. Lucie, who fell to a staggering 2-15. Ezequiel Carrera (0 for 5, .250), DJ Wabick (0 for 2, K, .188), Leivi Ventura (0 for 4, 3 Ks, .241), Sean McCraw (0 for 4, K, .163) and Hector Pellot (0 for 4, K, .190) had 0-fers.

Ruben Tejada (ss) 2 for 5, 2 runs, 2b, 2 Ks, .274
**Moises Alou** (lf) 3 for 3, run, 2b
Lucas Duda (1b) 2 for 5, run, K, .362
Josh Thole (dh) 2 for 4, run, 2 RBI, K, .250
Dylan Owen 4 IP, 4 H, 3 ER, 2 Ks, 2.70 era
Roy Merritt 1.1 IP, 3 H, 3 ER, 4 BBs, 7.71 era, L (0-1)
Jonathan Castillo IP, 4 H, 3 ER, 2 Ks, 22.50 era

Savannah 3, Rome 10

Jacobo Neguilis got destroyed for 8 runs, 7 earned, over 2 innings, wrecking a great start for Maikel Cleto. Cleto went 6, allowing 7 hits and 2 runs, 0 earned, while striking out 3. However, Neguilis came in and blew up in the 7th, allowing 5 runs. Despite this, he was allowed to blow some more in the 8th, allowing 3 runs. His final line was 2 innings, 6 hits, 8 runs (7 earned), 4 walks and 2 Ks.

Matt Bouchard (0 for 4, .161, E (8)), Greg Veloz (0 for 4, 3 Ks, .219) and Will Vogl (0 for 4, K, .071) took 0-fers, while Jose Jimenez and Jordan Abruzzo had multi-hit games for the Gnats, who fell to 6-11 and completed an 0-4 day for the minor league system.

Richard Lucas (3b) 1 for 4, run, RBI, 2 Ks, .226
Jose Jimenez (1b) 2 for 4, run, 2b, .233
Jordan Abruzzo (dh) 2 for 4, 2b, RBI, .536

  1. The Mets have signed 21–year-old German Catcher Kai Gronauer to a two-year minor league contract. Just by taking a look at his stats, you can tell the kid is quite the athlete. While playing for Germany in multiple tournaments and things of that sort he has excelled in every category. Now obviously, I can't tell you what the competition was like, because I simply don't know. But, as I look through his stats, he really reminds me of Dodger catcher Russel Martin.

To go along with his hitting abilities (who knows if that will transfer over) Gronauer showed a rare ability from catchers, the ability to steal bases. Also, while playing for Germany, Kai showed great defensive skills behind the plate, as he leaves Germany with the highest fielding percentage of any player in the history of their National team at .992. Not to mention the absolute cannon for an arm he has, gunning down nearly 50% of runners who attempted to steal off of him.

  2. Very interesting, thanks, Charlie.

Wonder where they're gonna start this kid. I'd think Brooklyn, Savannah or St. Lucie.
