I can't speak for David, but the more I hear, the more I wanna stay away. Throwing those 5 prospects at the Twins leaves us with Brant Rustich as our #1 prospect.
Brant. Rustich. Take a moment to digest that.
The most I'd offer is one of the OFers, and 2 pitchers from that pool of 5. Then 1 of each group of: Carp/Evans/Duda, Rustich/Kunz/Marte, Vargas/Bostick/Parnell. So hypothetically, the deal is:
Gomez, Humber, Mulvey, Evans, Kunz, Parnell
But in NO WAY IN HELL do I trade FIVE top prospects for any one player.
EDIT--
My take:
My thoughts on the whole thing? No way in hell would I give Fernando on TOP of the package we are already offering. Also, I would rather not give up Fernando AND Gomez in the same deal. Those are my two stand offs to the deal. I would rather not give up Guerra, but I wouldn't cry if we gave up Gomez, Guerra, Mulvey, Humber, and a couple of C+/B- prospects. Minnesota is being ridiculous asking for Omar to add Fernando to a deal that is almost equal to what they are being offered from the Red Sox and Yankees, Fernando would make that package 5 times better than the other two.
I trust Omar not to trade away every top prospect we have left for a guy who is signed for a year. I'll wait and see what happens, and I hope Omar will too.
P.S.: I think Santana would be a great addition to this team, especially at the price we are offering, but is not worth it at the price Minny is asking.

I have no problems with the trade offered (Gomez, Humber, Mulvey, and Guerra), the counter offer of including Fernando makes it difficult. I would be willing to exchange Pelfrey for Humber and and exchange Fernando for Gomez. I would even add a couple of smaller piece (say somebody like Gotay, Niese, Vargas). Coming back with an offer of Fernando/Gomez, Pelfrey/Humber, Mulvey, Guerra, and Gotay. I would be wary of giving in to the request of both Gomez and Fernando. That is not to say I would be furious with the move. I can understand why the Mets would do it, however, that would definitely be overpaying for Santana.
ReplyDeleteI think because a) he's only signed for one more year, and b) you're gonna have to pay him serious cash MOANAY to sign him...that should lessen the package we have to offer.
ReplyDeleteNo way in hell do you give up F-Mart. He is close to as valuable as Reyes and Wright to me. Santana would be great and I know he just a F-Mart is just a prospect the dude is a stud. Common Omar don't do it man.
ReplyDeleteIt's tough for me to consider an 18 year old untouchable. Especially given his performance last year (.713 OPS). Obviously, he is a good prospect... However, I don't think he is a lock to be a superstar. If you have a chance to get a player like Santana (persumably making us a legitimate World Series candidate) you have to seriously consider it. That being said, giving both Gomez and F-Mart is much more painful to do.
ReplyDeleteAs for Tejesh's comments, it does seem like the asking price should be less than for somebody like Bedard given the contract situation. Likewise, I just don't think Boston and the Yankees are in the race with Santana wholeheartedly. So, we maybe competing with ourselves. However, Minnesota's best card is time. If they don't get an offer that represents fair value their fanbase is going to be furious. Consequently, they might be tempted to wait until the trade deadline when Boston and the Yankees are in their annual power struggle and the need for Santana might be more pronounced for those two clubs.
Our need for Santana is already pretty great. It's tough to picture the 2008 Mets as a significantly improved team without the addition of Johan. We need a fair offer (perhaps slightly overpaying) to get this done. That does not mean we should cave into Minnesota's every demand.
Where exactly do you see this team as presently constituted? How many wins?
ReplyDeleteI see them as a 92-95 win team, NL East and NL Champs. Honestly, only 2 teams concern me in the entire league: the DBacks and the Padres. No one else is close to us, IMO.
After last September who can say. The rotation is very thin. I mean if every goes the Mets way (Pedro and El Duque each make over 25 starts, Pelfrey develops into a solid pitcher) the Mets could easily be as good as the 2006 team. However, that is a big IF. I really dont know what to expect. There is a ton of uncertainty around this team. I could see them anywhere in the range of 81-97 wins.
ReplyDeleteIf the season would start today, I think most baseball insiders would consider the Philly the favorites for the division. With Santana we would be the clear favorite in the NL and probably competitive with the powerhouses in the AL.
humber and mulvey are very displaceable to me. and im a big mulvey fan. but you could always get backend starters EASY. look right now lohse, livan, josh fogg etc. YAWN. gomez would have to go i could get over that. its johan santana. i am hard pressed to give fernando or guerra but i would be able to give ONE Carp/Evans/Duda, Rustich/Kunz/Marte, Vargas/Bostick/Parnell really gains no value. they're garbage in terms of trade value. so i go to...
ReplyDeleteguerra/fernando/heilman, gomez, mulvey humber, + smith/muniz/gotay
"guerra/fernando/heilman, gomez, mulvey humber, + smith/muniz/gotay"
ReplyDeleteHow can you put Heilman and Guerra in the same breath as Fernando? I dont think we should give them that choice.

i mean i agree but obviously anybody making the deal would have that 72 hour window to resign santnana. unless nobody would really be in this deal. its really how highly they look upon mulvey and humber as we know guerra, and gomez, and of course fernando are thought upon highly.
