Prospect Focus: Josh Thole
Splits courtesy www.minorleaguesplits.com
The Mets selected Thole in the 13th round of the 2005 draft, and sent him to the GCL Mets, where he hit .269/.406/.337/.743 (28 for 104, 14 runs, 2 2b, 3b, HR, 12 RBI, 20/11 BB/K) in 35 games, an outstanding 1.8182 BB/K ratio, and a ridiculously low .105 K rate, both incredible numbers for an 18 year old in any setting.
Thole hit .370/.514/.407/.921 vs LHP in 2005 (10 for 27, 2b, 6/2 BB/K), with a 3.000 BB/K ratio and a .074 K rate, and .234/.366/.312/.678 (18 for 77, 2b, 3b, HR, 14/9 BB/K) vs RHP, with a 1.556 BB/K ratio, and a .117 K rate.
In 2006, Thole played in 35 games for Kingsport, getting just 96 ABs, and hitting .240/.306/.313/.619 (23 for 96, 4 2b, HR, 7/24 BB/K), a .2917 BB/K ratio and a .250 K rate, both drastically elevated from the year prior. He hit .167/.286/.208/.494 vs LHP (4 for 24, 2b, 2/6 BB/K) and .264/.313/.347/.660 (19 for 72, 3 2b, HR, 5/18 BB/K) vs RHP. Both sample sizes are too small to draw any meaningful conclusions from.
2007 saw Thole in full season Savannah, where he performed markedly better then Kingsport, hitting .267/.372/.311/.683 (104 for 389, 46 runs, 17 2b, 36 RBI, 61/57 BB/K), once again with excellent ratios, a 1.0701 BB/K ratio, and a .147 K rate.
Thole batted .301/.414/.329/.743 against LHP (22 for 73, 2 2b, 11/9 BB/K), a 1.22 BB/K ratio, and a .123 K rate. Against RHP, he batted .261/.368/.312/.680 (82 for 314, 16 2b, 52/47 BB/K), a 1.107 BB/K ratio and a .150 K rate.
Thole, as many Met prospects have done, has improved drastically across the board after making the jump from the Sally League to the pitcher friendly FSL. Thole finished the 2008 season hitting .300/.382/.427/.808 (104 for 347, 49 runs, 25 2b, 2 3b, 5 HR, 56 RBI, 45/38 BB/K), a great 1.184 BB/K ratio and an equally fantastic .110 K rate (which for much of the season was below .100).
Thole got off to a very rough start, hitting .228/.323/.386/.709 in April, and since that point, he hit .314/.393/.434/.828 (91 for 290, 42 runs, 21 2b, 3b, 4 HR, 46 RBI, 38/30 BB/K)
As has been the case throughout the majority of Thole's minor league career, he hit better against LHP then RHP, but this year, that gap narrowed considerably. He hit .333/.386/.432/.818 (27 for 81, 14 runs, 6 2b, 3b, 8 RBI, 6/8 BB/K) vs LHP, with a 0.750 BB/K ratio, and a K rate of .098, while against RHP, he hit .289/.381/.426/.807 (76 for 263, 35 runs, 19 2b, 3b, 5 HR, 48 RBI, 39/30 BB/K), with a 1.300 BB/K ratio, and a .114 K rate.
Thole played the majority of his first 3 seasons as a 1b (142 of 187 games), but in 2008, he played much more catcher, giving him infinitely more value as a player and a prospect.
THE FUTURE: Thole will undoubtedly be in Binghamton to open the 2009 season (after setting career highs in every offensive category except OBP), as the everyday catcher, and one of the few catching prospects in the upper levels of the farm system. While SAL to FSL is one test, the much bigger test for a prospect is the jump from the FSL to EL, the jump Thole will be making in 2009. Thole is solidly on pace for a prospect, playing the entire season as a 21 year old this year affords him a cushion if he were to falter on his trek through the system.
For more on Josh Thole, visit my good friend Joe DeMayo's website, NYbaseballdigest. http://nybaseballdigest.com/?p=922
UPDATE 2009: Thole enjoyed yet another terrific offensive season, this time in AA Binghamton, setting career highs in 2b (29), SBs (8), K rate (.089), AVG (.328), and OPS (.817). Overall this season in Binghamton, he hit .328/.395/.422/.817 (126 for 384, 48 runs, 29 2b, 2 3b, HR, 46 RBI, 42/34 BB/K, 8/12 SBs), with a great 1.24 BB/K ratio, and a ridiculously low .089 K rate.
Thole's L/R platoon splits reversed themselves this season somewhat, he hit for an identical average/OBP against both lefties and righties, but flashed off more 'pop' against righties, driving his OPS higher. Against lefties, he hit .328/.391/.388/.779 (38 for 116, 13 runs, 7 2b, 10 RBI, 10/14 BB/K, 1/4 SBs), with a .7143 BB/K ratio and a .121 K rate. Against righties, Thole hit .328/.396/.437/.833 (88 for 268, 35 runs, 22 2b, 2 3b, HR, 36 RBI, 32/20 BB/K, 7/8 SBs), with a ridiculous 1.6000 BB/K ratio, and an equally ridiculous .075 K rate.
THE FUTURE: Thole's gotten a September callup, and is performing decently, hitting .324, albeit with no pop (29 IsoP) as of this writing. I would hope the Mets keep Thole on the conservative path, and allow him to start 2010 in Buffalo (moreso for his defense then his offense).

Prospect Focus: Ike Davis
Splits courtesy www.minorleaguesplits.com
The Mets took Ike Davis with the 18th overall pick in the 2008 draft out of Arizona State, where he had a composite line of .352/.418/.601/1.019 in 684 ABs (68 2b, 32 HR, 77/131 BB/K), with a .192 K rate and a .5878 BB/K ratio.
In his junior year, Davis hit .385/.457/.742/1.199 (82 for 213, 64 runs, 26 2b, 3b, 16 HR, 76 RBI, 6/8 SBs, 31/34 BB/K), with a .160 K rate and an outstanding .9118 BB/K ratio. Against lefties, Davis hit .347/.430/.733/1.163 (26 for 75, 21 runs, 8 2b, 7 HR, 27 RBI, 11/18 BB/K), with a .240 K rate and a .6111 BB/K ratio, while against righties, he hit .397/.475/.777/1.252 (48 for 121, 40 runs, 17 2b, 3b, 9 HR, 46 RBI, 18/13 BB/K) with a miniscule .107 K rate and an equally outstanding 1.384 BB/K ratio.
Upon signing with the Mets, he was sent to Brooklyn where he had an all together brutal time of it, hitting just .256/.326/.326/.652 (55 for 215, 17 runs, 15 2b, 17 RBI, 23/43 BB/K), with a good .200 K rate, and an equally good .5349 BB/K ratio. Davis hit better against lefties, .317/.369/.383/.752 (19 for 60, 4 2b, 5/15 BB/K), with a corresponding .250 K rate and a .3333 BB/K ratio, then he did versus righties, .232/.310/.303/.613 (36 for 155, 11 2b, 18/28 BB/K), with a .181 K rate, and a .6429 BB/K ratio.
Despite his awful year in Brooklyn, and there being some talk in the organization of having him open 2009 in Savannah, Davis opened in St. Lucie, where he enjoyed very good success, hitting .290/.378/.489/.867 (64 for 221, 28 runs, 17 2b, 3 3b, 7 HR, 28 RBI, 31/52 BB/K), with a good .235 K rate, and an equally good .5962 BB/K ratiod.
Davis hit MISERABLY against lefties, just .200/.234/.283/.518 (12 for 60, 4 runs, 2 2b, HR, 5 RBI, 3/18 BB/K), with a .300 K rate and a .1667 BB/K ratio, but on the flip side, hit extremely well against righties, .323/.426/.565/.992 (52 for 161, 24 runs, 15 2b, 3 3b, 6 HR, 23 RBI, 28/34 BB/K), with a .211 K rate and a very good .8235 BB/K ratio. At this point, I would've left Davis in St. Lucie, mostly due to his abysmal numbers against lefties, but the Mets obviously had other plans.
They promoted Davis to Binghamton on June 19th, where he proceeded to annihiliate the Eastern League, hitting .309/.386/.565/.951 (64 for 207, 30 runs, 14 2b, 13 HR, 43 RBI, 26/60 BB/K), with a very high .290 K rate, and a decent .4333 BB/K ratio. He hit markedly better against lefties in Binghamton, hitting .268/.342/.465/.807 (19 for 71, 9 runs, 5 2b, 3 HR, 14 RBI, 8/25 BB/K), with a ridiculously laughable .352 K rate, and a low .3200 BB/K ratio. Davis abused righties, much as he did in St. Lucie. He hit .331/.409/.618/1.027 against AA righties (45 for 136, 21 runs, 9 2b, 10 HR, 29 RBI, 18/35 BB/K), with a very good .257 K rate, and an equally good .5143 BB/K ratio.
Overall in 2009, Davis hit .298/.381/.524/.906 (128 for 429, 58 runs, 31 2b, 3 3b, 20 HR, 71 RBI, 57/112 BB/K), with a .261 K rate, and a .5089 BB/K ratio. He hit just .237/.296/.382/.677 against lefties (31 for 131, 13 runs, 7 2b, 4 HR, 19 RBI, 11/43 BB/K), with a deplorable .328 K rate, and an equally poor .2558 BB/K ratio. Keep in mind Davis did improve substantially against LHP after being promoted to AA.
Against righties, Davis just mashed, hitting a combined .327/.417/.589/1.006 (97 for 297, 45 runs, 24 2b, 3 3b, 16 HR, 52 RBI, 46/69 BB/K), with an excellent .232 K rate, and an equally good .6667 BB/K ratio.
THE FUTURE: Davis should spend all of 2010 with Buffalo, primarily manning 1b (although a little corner outfield shouldn't be out of the question), and should be in line to succeed Daniel Murphy in 2011.

As requested, my look at the 40 man roster. The roster currently stands at 35 active players, and 8 players on the 60 day DL (for a total of 43, for the mathmatically challenged). Following is a list of players I would DFA/cut/release, to free up room on the 40 man roster, in preperation for the Rule V draft.
Pitchers: Lance Broadway, Elmer Dessens, Jack Egbert, Sean Green, Arturo Lopez, Tim Redding (6)
Catchers: Brian Schneider (1)
Infielders: Alex Cora, Andy Green, Ramon Martinez, Fernando Tatis (4)
Outfielders: Jeremy Reed, Gary Sheffield (2)
That frees up 13 spots on the roster, taking it down from 43 to 30. Keep in mind you need to add 2005 HS and 2006 college players to the 40 man, or risk losing them in the Rule V. Here is a list of Met candidates (who I deem even slightly intriguing) for the 2009 Rule V draft
2005 draft: Hector Pellot (2b, 4th round), Nick Carr (P, 41st round)
2006 draft: Phillips Orta (P, 10th round)
Not alot there, huh? Mainly because the guys who we need to protect are already on there (Fernando, Thole, Niese, Stoner). Of the 3 on the short list, I'd protect Nick Carr. Hard throwing righty who hit 100 MPH a few times this past season in St. Lucie, still young, was pitching lights out as a reliever.
That puts 31 on the 40 man, figure we will resign Tatis for a 1 year deal, and also bring back Green and Cora, that put 34 on the roster. FIgure 2 or 3 FA signings, and then 2 spots open for the Rule V, putting the spring training 40 man roster at 38 or 39, leaving you room for a waiver pickup, or in case a NRI surprises you enough to merit addition to the 25 man.
So there you go, the 40 man roster.
