Update on Fernando...

Fernando Martinez has been shut down for three weeks because of a strained right elbow.
The Mets didn't say whether its the UCL that's damaged. Even if it is, Martinez could likely still play this season and then undergo Tommy John surgery next winter if he needs it. This will delay the start of his spring a bit, but he should still be ready to begin the minor league season on time. Feb. 6 - 5:42 pm et

Uh - wow. I would like to reiterate that I hate/loathe the Mets medical staff with a passion reserved for the Philthies. How these morons got and retain their medical licenses will go down as one of the biggest unsolved mysteries of the 21st century.

  1. So just in the hypothetical worst case scenario, (that is, this is an injury that will require Tommy John Surgery) how would the Mets handle this? Hitters can usually continue to swing the bat with this type of injury (see Albert Pujols), but throwing from the outfield could be problematic. The way I figure it, should it become apparent that F-Mart will need TJS in the near future, there would be two options:

    1. Shut him down and do the surgery right away.

    2. Try a move to first base to limit his throwing but keep his bat in the lineup, and then have the surgery at the beginning of next offseason.

  2. Well - I believe they're hoping rest will help the injury, but this does cloud his future in the OF, IF IF IF IF it's a UCL injury. We don't know, and anything the moronic doctors tell us is likely wrong.
