What the Santana trade means for the farm system...

Everyone's analyzed 99.5% of everything relevant already, but I doubt this has been discussed. As a result of the trade, there is no question that the Mets have one of the worst, if not the worst, farm system in baseball. According to the ‘experts’ (and I use that term very loosely), we weren’t that good to begin with, and trading 4 of our top 6 prospects didn’t do much to help. Any way you slice it, Carlos Gomez, Deolis Guerra, Kevin Mulvey and Philip Humber is a HUGE chunk of talent to delete from your system in one fell swoop.

What does this mean going forward? Two separate yet linked things. One, the Mets are now going to have to rely heavily on the free agent market, since 3 pitching options are gone. Second, and this is very important, the Mets must not again adhere to the slotting system put in place by Selig. The farm system must be rebuilt, at all costs. It is imperative. All the poppycock you read about surrendering first and second round picks because of Type A free agents is just that, a bunch of horse shit. Talent falls all the time in the draft. Just look at 2007, for example. The amount of talent that fell is ridiculous.

The 07 draft saw the following players fall: Matt Harvey (rhsp), Jack McGeary (lhsp), Cole St. Clair (lhp), Chad Jones (lhsp/of), Tanner Robles (lhsp), Brandon Efferson (rhsp), Taylor Cole (rhsp), Matt Thomson (rhsp), Victor Sanchez (3b/c), Matt Presley (of), Kevin Patterson (1b/c), Yasmani Grandal (c), Nick Tepesch (rhsp). 13 players in BAs Top 100 fell to the 5th round and beyond (with the exception of Harvey, who was top 5 talent who fall to the mid 1-teens). The Mets selected ONE, and didn't even sign him.

That amount of frugality cannot be condoned anymore. In similar circumstances in the future, the Mets better take all or most of that kind of talent, and then pony up the cash to sign it, or else the piss poor farm system will remain so.

I would recommend a budget of $14m-$20m for the draft, and $6m-$10m for the International Free Agent market. I hope it happens, but going by the empty rhetoric prior to the 2007 draft (where the buzz was the Mets were all set to spend) - I need to see it before I believe it.

  1. Well from what i've heard we have 3 first round picks in this years draft. I think the Mets will build it back up. Let's face it it's been an uphill battle anyways. I don't think we gave up all that much in the Johan trade. The only player I was really excited about was Guerra.
