Jonathan Niese - DOMINANT

Jon Niese's 2nd major league start went much much better then his first. Niese showed that poise we saw in spring training tonight, right from first pitch you could tell it was a different Jon Niese on the mound at Shea.

Niese fired 8 shutout innings tonight, allowing just 6 hits and 2 walks, striking out 7. If you watched the game, you saw he had a fantastic curveball tonight, and he used it liberally to get a majority of his Ks. He also generated 10 groundouts, most of them on that curveball.

And - he got his first hit. It was a searing line drive, lol. OK, a little chopper to second base that he beat out. Everything can't be roses, right? Anyway, a terrific outing from Niese, with the Mets having lost in the afternoon, looking at having their lead sliced in half due to Philly's win, and he stepped up and delievered exactly what was required. Way to go, Jon Niese!

Jon Niese 8 IP, 6 H, 2/7 BB/K, 4.05 era, W (1-0), 116:75:39, 10:7:7 (career high in pitches)

And oh yeah - Dan Murphy had another hit PHing, he's now hitting .365/.450 in the majors. 31 for 85 with 14 walks and a sac fly. Wow.

Niese either in AAA, or you trade him for bullpen help (Soria in KC, or Gonzalez/Soriano in ATL, or Betancourt in CLE, some sort of power arm for the back of the pen).

  6. That's something like 65M./year in starting pitchers/closers. I'm sorry, but I like Niese and think he's ready, and would only trade him for Dustin Pedroia.

Though I will acknowledge that you might be kidding. I know that you know you know, for instance, that both Sabbathia and K-Rod would cost 2 draft picks.

  7. You pay to get the best now, you don't have to pay later. And they'd cost 1 pick each from us (1st and 2nd round).

I'm waiting until we win the WS to reveal my offseason plan.

  8. True, my bad, they get a supplementary sandwich pick, but we don't lose it; and if the Brewers do not sign him, they'll just get the sandwich pick anyway.

2nd round? You honestly do not think KRod will be a type A free agent?

Niese and Ollie would be better value for performance than Sabbathia and Ollie, I'd say, (although it is true that Niese was essentially pitching against a AAAA team, but it was red hot AAAA team that scored 18 runs off Pelf and Ollie--and the bullcrap-pen). Sabbathia will be wildly overpaid for the next 6 years. Ollie is, I feel, undervalued. His history of erratic performance obscures the facts that overall, he's highly effective and very young for his level of big-league experience.

If we're going to spend money on a 28 year old FA, I'd rather spend it on Teixiera.

  9. Of course, if Ollie will command, say 2/3-3/4ths of the money Sabbathia will command, it might make more sense to sign Sabbathia, since we will get 2 picks for Ollie and only lose one for Sabbathia. But he's still older and more out of shape/injury-prone, so it's not a no-brainer even then.
