Off-Season Update: A's Trade For Holliday

That Billy Beane.. You just never know what he's going to do next. Just as you thought the A's off-season splurge was going to be trading Huston Street for more prospects, Billy Beane jumps at the chance to get a big name bat, and is now talking about spending and competing in 2009, with his eye now on free agent SS Rafael Furcal.

So what did the A's give up for Mr. Holliday? A package of Huston Street*, Carlos Gonzalez, and Greg Smith. A pretty decent amount for 1 year of Matt Holliday, but I guess Beane feels like he'll be able to get that much talent back in compensation for Holliday, who is a free agent after the upcoming season.

So.. How does any of this have to do with the Mets? No, they weren't getting Holliday, but they have had their eye on Mr. Street, and early reports are that the Rockies are already looking to trade the 26 year old Street... Now if I'm the Mets, I'm doing a fist pump right now that I don't have to deal with Billy Beane while making this trade.

Looking for further train reactions, if the Mets are able to trade for Street, this will give them more leverage in the closer market for guys such as Fuentes/K-Rod. No longer would they be "desperate" to bring in a closer, now it would be more of a luxury..
