Braves Sign Derek Lowe

As you probably know by now, the Atlanta Braves have signed 36* year old Derek Lowe to a 4 year 60 million dollar deal. This comes not long after the Braves signed Japanese starter Kenshin Kawakami to a 3 year deal.

~It's Ollie time.

Yeah, I wanted Lowe over Ollie from the get-go, it's true, but I was also 100% against giving Lowe a 4 year deal. I was willing to go (and I'm sure the Mets were to) going to a 3 year deal up around 40ish million with a 4th year CLUB option, but the Braves guaranteed the 4th year and got their guy.

Now it's time for Omar to get his guy. I know Boras is going to use Ollie being the last "big named guy" (outside of Ben Sheets) left on the market to try and get Omar to panic and overpay, but I don't see it happening. I just don't see the market for Perez outside the Mets, and I think you may start hearing the name Ben Sheets connected to the Mets to help with the Mets leverage in the situation.

It was reported yesterday that the Mets have offered Oliver Perez a 3 year deal worth almost $30 million.

That probably won't get it done, but I can't see it taking much more. I'll guess 3/36 with an option, basically the same offer they had out to Lowe.

  1. Option A) Sign Ollie

Option B) Sign Wolf AND Sheets

I never liked the idea of Wolf, but I am liking option B more and more...i THINK the mets would even have a 1st rounder in the draft, but no second rounder in this option.

  2. out of all 3 options (lowe, perez, or option 3 whoever it may be), lowe was by far the safest bet.
oliie could work out ok, but the mets really need to get him signed. i will not be happy if we're forced to sign sheets, knowing what his medical history is.
ollie may be half a head-case, but at least we know he'll be there in september.

  3. Without Lowe, the Mets might have lost the NL East: http://jumpinginpools.blogspot.com/2009/01/without-lowe-mets-have-lost-nl-east.html

  4. sheets pitched nearly 200 innings last year and when healthy can be a top 5 pitcher in the league. Buy low on him. 2/16

  5. The Mets didn't lose last year because of their rotation, they lost because of the bullpen. The rotation, even with only bringing back Ollie, should be better than last year, considering Redding will make all of his starts and we'll have a full year of john maine.

so even if they bring back Ollie and don't do anything else, the 2009 rotation should be better than 2008
