Off-Season Update: Mets Sign Garcia

According to multiple sources the Mets have signed Freddy Garcia to a minor league contract. Garcia, 32, made just 3 starts for the Tigers last season going 1-1 with a 4.20 ERA in 15 innings. If Garcia reaches all the incentives in the contract he could make up $9 million in 2009.

~One thing the Mets have certainly lacked the last couple of seasons was depth in the starting pitching department, and this off-season Omar has definitely made an attempt to fix that problem. I'm not crowning Garcia as a savior by any means, but he seems like a pretty good 5th starter and gives the Mets depth. In prior years we've seen the likes of Jose Lima, Brian Lawrence, Alay Soler, Tony Armas, Claudio Vargas, Jeremy Gonzalez (RIP) etc... have to fill in for injured Mets pitchers.. and we all know how that worked out.. These signings at least means we won't have to go through that again.

Now this signing does nothing for me unless the Mets sign one of Sheets/Ollie, and as of now.. It looks pretty likely that's going to happen. So going into the 2009 season we should be looking at a rotation of

Santana
Sheets/Perez
Pelfrey
Maine
Garcia/Redding

Some people will complain and say it's not enough of an upgrade from last year. But those people need to realize that last season we didn't have a healthy JOHN MAINE, we didn't have a 5th starter, and we didn't have a full season of a GOOD Mike Pelfrey. Factor all that in and you get yourself a much improved rotation.

ANOTHER UPDATE:

O yeah.. It seems that Randy Wolf has signed with the Dodgers.
