By the way, in a report for ESPN Deportes, Enrique Rojas says Martinez could be called upon by manager Felipe Alou to play for the Dominican Republic in the World Baseball Classic in March.
“My heart torn,” Martinez told Rojas. “On one hand, I want to be in spring training with the Mets, to improve my chances of getting a job, but being in the World Baseball Classic with all the big stars would be a dream.”
Look, Fernando, I know you think you have a chance of making the team out of spring training, but... you don't. The reality is that there just isn't a spot on the big league team for you right now, which isn't a problem, because it'd be a huge mistake if you were to start in the majors this year.
Anyways, the WBC would be a G-R-E-A-T thing for Fernando. It's not like he's going to be getting a ton of playing time, most likely a defensive replacement/pinch runner, so we don't have to worry about him getting injured, and playing on a team with so many great veteran players can only help his development. Just think of the things he could pick up from spending time with Big Papi, Albert Pujols, MANNY, Vlad.. ETC
And for your viewing pleasure.. A video of Fernando's 2B from the other night. Look at that stroke.
