Farewell 2009 post

As I told M4L on AIM, I needed a few days to sort of catch my breath (this happens every season - writing up 125 some odd MLRs a night gets so monotoneous...), before focussing on what's going to happen with the blog during the winter.

Obviously the minor league season is over, and all our affiliates were brutal except Brooklyn (for reasons I refuse to get into again). Winter League action should start up in a month, and late word is Jenrry Mejia will be joining Ruben Tejada in Arizona (I hope this isn't to prep Mejia for an assignment to Buffalo next year).

Daniel Murphy will be DHing and playing 1b for Escogido in the DWL, he'll be there with Tobi Stoner.

Of course the 2009 BWC is going on right now and Ike Davis is continuing to abuse pitchers. Stefan Welch is hitting well for Australia (please don't jump him to Binghamton for 2010...).

I'll be doing my 2009 series of updates for my prospect focuses (focii, I believe, is the correct pluralization). MPH System Audit IV sometime next February or March, and a whole lot of randomness until then.

I think 2009 was MPHs best year, so thanks to all of you guys and gals for making it such!

Tej

PS: Lets root for the 4th pick, eh?

9/7 Minor League Report! NIESEN!!!

Well, another minor league season has come to an end. Full of ups (the Savannah quartet, Davis, the late surge of Nieuwenhuis/Guzman/Maldonado/Havens) and downs (Kunz, Evans, more Rustich injuries). Those of you reading this on MMO and NYFS - this will be my final post to your respective eyes until I come back for 2010 (maybe, I actually haven't decided if I want to post off MPH anymore). You can check in on MPH (http://metsprospecthub.blogspot.com) for daily updates of Cyclones playoff games, and for winter league updates, as well as final top prospect lists for 2009 and whatever else I feel like doing.

Michael Antonini had an awful end to his 2009 season, giving up 6 runs (5 earned, Rafael Arroyo error) on 11 hits in 7 innings to take his 5th loss in AA.

The Mets offense had 10 hits and 3 walks, while going 1 for 6 with RISP and leaving 8 on base. Kirk Nieuwenhuis only had one hit tonight (demote him to the GCL!). Jose Coronado (3), DJ Wabick (2) and Mark Kiger (3) had multi hit games, while Caleb Stewart (0 for 4, 2 Ks, .227), Carlos Guzman (0 for 4, .188) and Rafael Arroyo (0 for 4, 2 Ks, .000) took 0-fers.

FSL A+: St. Lucie 2/7/1, Palm Beach 1/4/0

John Maine began rehabbing again tonight, he pitched 4 shutout innings for the Mets, giving up 2 hits while striking out 6 and walking 1. One would assume he would 2 more rehab starts, and then rejoin the Mets sometime near the 20th, barring setbacks (for what purpose, who the hell knows? Ditto Carlos Beltran...)

William Rackel picked up the win with 2 scoreless innings to end the game. The Mets had 7 hits and 2 walks, while going 0 for 7 with RISP and leaving 7 on base. Reese Havens was HBP in his third PA and left the game for a PR (most likely being overtly cautious considering the Mets are fighting for nothing and it's the final weekend of the season). Hector Pellot had the lone multi hit game. Josh Satin (0 for 3, K, .389), Sean Ratliff (0 for 4, K, .304), and Francisco Pena (0 for 3, BB, 2 Ks, .224) all took 0-fers.

Zach Von Tersch's lone Sally League outing of the season was a decent one, he gave up 3 runs on 3 hits and 2 walks in 6 innings for a ND, after Marcos Tabata came in and allowed an UER in the 8th to blow the save. John Church allowed a run in the 9th to take his 3rd loss.

The Gnats had 6 hits, but drew 5 walks while going 1 for 10 with RISP and leaving 8 on base. Raul Reyes (2) had the only multi hit game, while Wilmer Flores, Nick Giarraputo (0 for 4, K, .382), Mike Moras (0 for 3, run, BB, .308), and Joey August (0 for 3, RBI, BB, K, .210) all took 0-fers.

Carlos Beltran played the full game in CF today, going 1 for 5 with an RBI and K.

Darin Gorski's uneven 2009 pro season continued with a good outing tonight, he gave up a run on a hit and 4 walks in 5.2 innings (too many walks, but whatever), but took a ND after Jake Goldberg gave up a pair of runs in the 8th. Michael Powers picked up the win with a scoreless 9th inning.

The Conies offense had 11 hits and 3 walks, while going 1 for 9 (.111) with RISP, and leaving 9 on base. Jordany Valdespin (2) and Ralph Henriquez (3) had multi hit games, while Richard Lucas (0 for 4, K, .246) took the only 0-fer.

Eric Brown won't set the Binghamton record for losses in 2009, he tied it at 14 a few weeks ago, and since doing so, has won his last 2 outings, including tonight.

The Mets offense hammered out 13 hits and 3 walks, beating up on Tim Alderson again this season. They went 5 for 11 (.455) with RISP and left 6 on base. Kirk Nieuwenhuis (2, of course he did!), DJ Wabick (2), Emmanuel Garcia (2) and Salvador Paniagua (3) had multi hit games, while Mark Kiger (0 for 1, run, BB, K, .225 - took over for Ruben Tejada who left the game in the 4th, no reason given), and Carlos Guzman (0 for 3, run, BB, K, .250) took 0-fers.

Five players had multi hit games as the Mets poured across 8 runs on 14 hits and 2 walks, and won the opener of a twinight doubleheader over the Cardinals, 8-7. Reese Havens (2), Josh Satin (2), Sean Ratliff (3), Francisco Pena (2) and Brahiam Maldonado (2) had multi hit games, while Richard Pena (0 for 2, run, BB, .212) took the only 0-fer. Pena is 3 for his last 26. The Mets went 8 for 17 (.471) with RISP and left 7 on base.

Scott Shaw was not effective in his final outing of the season, he gave up 7 runs (4 earned, Josh Satin error) on 8 hits, over 5.2 innings. Manuel Alvarez stranded the tying run on base and picked up his 9th save with a 4 outer.

FSL A+: St. Lucie 8/9/2, Palm Beach 4/6/5

After losing half their lineup, you'd think the Mets wouldn't put up runs in bunches, right? Wrong. Josh Satin (2), and Brahiam Maldonado (2) had multi hit games in the nightcap, leading a 9 hit, 4 walk attack as the Mets swept the Cardinals today, winning the nightcap 8-4. Scott Moviel pitched well enough (4 runs, 2 earned in 5.1 innings) to pick up the win. Josh Stinson picked up the save with a 5 outer.

SAL A: Savannah 2/7/3, Charleston 3/6/0

Kyle Allen had a very good outing to end what can only be called a banner first full season. Allen finishes the year with a 3.45 era and 9 wins, though the Gnats defense likely cost him 3-5 more (as it cost every starter). Still, Allen had an A+ first full season. Tonight, he was (as happened alot) denied a win by his defense and bullpen. He gave up 3 hits and an UER in 5 innings, while walking a pair and striking out 6. Mike Lynn took the loss after allowing an UER in the 9th.

The Gnats offense had 7 hits and drew 4 walks, while going just 2 for 11 (.182) with RISP and leaving 7 on base. Wilmer Flores (2) and Nick Giarraputo (2) had multi hit games, while Alonzo Harris (0 for 4, 3 Ks, .176, E (1)), Raul Reyes (0 for 4, K, .249), Juan Lagares (0 for 3, run, BB, K, .273), and Luis Alen (0 for 3, BB, .143) all took 0-fers.

Carlos Beltran continued his rehab tonight, going 0 for 3 while playing CF.

Manuel Olivares got jacked up something fierce in relief today, giving up 7 runs (only 2 earned, though) in the 7th inning, his 2nd of work, but it was Brandon Moore, who left down 1-0 after 5, who took the loss, his 3rd.

The Conies offense had just 5 hits and 2 walks, while going 0 for 6 with RISP and leaving 4 on base. Jordany Valdespin (0 for 3, BB, 2 Ks, .276), RJ Harris (0 for 1, K, .273), Joe Bonfe (0 for 2, K, .091), Juan Centeno (0 for 3, K, .164), and Luis Nieves (0 for 3, K, .142) all took 0-fers, while Ralph Henriquez (2) had the only multi hit game.

NYPL A-: Brooklyn 4/6/1, Hudson Valley 5/9/2

Maybe Freddy needs to send David Wright to Brooklyn for "rehab", huh? Another loss, combined with the Yankees 13th straight victory dropped the Cyclones 1.5 games out of first with 3 to play. However, as I noted yesterday, the loser of the division is guaranteed the wildcard, so whatever.

Carlos Beltran played 5 innings in the field today, as was the plan, and went 0 for 2 with a walk at the plate as he continues his rehab assignment.

The Conies overall had 6 hits and drew 2 walks, while going 2 for 6 with RISP and leaving 6 on base. Richard Lucas (0 for 3, BB, K, .264), Alex Gregory (0 for 4, K, .278), and Robbie Shields (0 for 3, K, .173), took 0-fers, no Cyclone had a multi hit game.

Mark Cohoon started and went the first 5, allowing just a run on 5 hits. Michael Powers gave up a pair in the 9th for his 2nd blown save and 3rd loss.

20. 1B Lucas Duda (21)
21. RHSP Brant Rustich (3) Note: His stuff is unparalled in the system, but his history of arm injuries renders him a complete wild card, and as such, I cannot justify a ranking in the top 10 anymore. Make no mistake, on pure stuff alone, he's a top 5 prospect, injuries rob him.
22. OF Brahiam Maldonado
23. RHSP Dillon Gee (13) Note: Torn labrums are nothing to take lightly, and that is the injury Gee's suffered from this year. He's opted for rest and rehab in lieu of surgery, so his status is completely up in the air, hence the low ranking. Prior to the injury, he was a good bet to make a few starts in the majors as a command and control guy.
