John Maine threw 63 pitches in his first rehab outing, going 4 innings, allowing a hit and 2 walks, but reportedly he topped out at 88 MPH. It's a shame, but I believe John Maine is finished as a competent MLB pitcher, and it's taken me these last 2-3 weeks to finally accept it. Maine was easily my favorite pitcher to watch in the 2006 and 2007 seasons, and his spring 08 looked to be his springboard to becoming one of baseball's elite young starters, but it wasn't meant to be. For my money, Maine has the single greatest pitching performance I've ever seen (of course, I'm talking about the 14 K, 7.2 no hit innings he threw in Game 161 of the 2007 season). Big Game Johnny Maine is no more.
And it's looking like Brad Holt never will be, he followed Maine into the game and proceeded to just get demolished, giving up 6 runs on 4 hits and 3 walks in 1.1 innings for his 5th loss. The Mets offense had 9 hits and a walk, but were just 1 for 5 with RISP, left 7 on base, and struck out 6 times. Eric Campbell was the lone bright spot for the Mets, he had 3 hits, including a double and homer. Omir Santos (0 for 4, .105) and Jose Coronado (0 for 3, BB, K, .222) took 0-fers
