Binghamton 8, Portland 9
As one of my friends is fond of saying, it is better to fail spectacularly then succeed blandly (paraphrased). In that vein, I present to you Roy Merritt's first blown save, a spectactular 3 run bottom of the 9th. OK, all kidding aside, it was an ugly night for the pitchers, starting with Dylan Owen giving up 4 runs on 5 hits (including a homer) and 3 walks over 5.2 innings. Fernando Nieve gave up 2 runs in 1.1 innings before he and Josh Thole were both ejected in the 8th inning, setting the stage for Merritt's 9th.
The offense certainly came to life for the Mets, generating 14 hits and 6 walks, parlaying that into 8 runs. The Mets went 9 for 19 with RISP, and stranded 8 runners on base, but offense definitely wasn't the issue tonight. Josh Thole, Lucas Duda, Jon Malo and DJ Wabick had multi hit games, while Carl Loadenthal (0 for 4, run, BB, K, .309) was the only one to go hitless.

Stephen Clyne vultured a win tonight, stealing it from Scott Shaw, who started and allowed 2 runs on 6 hits over 5 innings. Clyne blew the save allowing a run in the top of the 9th, and then was the beneficiary as the Mets scored one in the bottom half for the win.
The Mets had 9 hits and drew 3 walks in going 2 for 6 with RISP. They left 8 men on base. Greg Veloz (0 for 5, 2 Ks, .253), Seth Williams (0 for 4, K, .265) and Rafael Arroyo (0 for 2, BB, .150) took 0-fers for the Mets, while Kirk Nieuwenhuis and Carlos Guzman had multi hit games.

Jeff Kaplan was decent, but not great tonight, allowing 4 runs (2 earned) on 5 hits (including a homer) and 2 walks in 5 innings, taking the loss.
The Gnats pounded out 9 hits against the Greenville starter (Casey Kelly) in 5 innings, but then were no hit against Fabian Williamson in 4 innings. Juan Lagares took an 0-fer and a golden sombrero, the only 0-fer in the Gnats lineup. Jefry Marte had the only multi hit game for the Gnats.
