10+ scouts out watching Jon Niese

NY Post:
The scouting section swelled (at least 10 teams were represented) to see the New York Mets ' Double-A ace Jon Niese throw seven shutout innings against the Yanks' Double-A Trenton team on Saturday. Niese is 5-7 with a 3.09 ERA, and beyond Fernando Martinez probably would be the most in-demand Met in trade requests.

The Mets, however, only have Johan Santana, John Maine and Mike Pelfrey under control next year among their starting pitchers. If they were to deal Niese, they would be removing their only close-to-the-majors starting prospect. . . .

The losing pitcher in that Binghamton-Trenton game was Brian Bruney, who continues to work back after suffering a torn Lisfranc ligament in his right foot early in the season. A scout who was in attendance said Bruney was 93-95 mph and had good arm strength, but showed his rust in a second inning of work.

I have a gut feeling Niese goes before the deadline...
Niese, Evans, Maikel Cleto and a AAA SP(Armas or Figueroa, they need a back end rotation starter) for Jason Bay?

Maybe we could try to steal one of their young struggling SP too? Tom Gorzelanny? Ian Snell? We'd have to throw in a bit more but as long as its not Fernando its cool.

  1. Yeah lets trade away our only legit pitching prospect when the Mets only have 3 pitchers in the rotation for next year. Smart.

  2. With Pelfrey emerging the way he has, I think you can do that deal. Santana, Maine, and Pelfrey could be one of the best #1, #2, #3 in the majors over the next three to five years. With that top three, you can get by with just an average #4 and #5. With Pedro and Oliver off the books, you have $15 mil. plus to devote to filling the two spots.

  3. Why not keep Niese and have more money to spend on a 5?

Or just sign Sabathia and have the best rotation in baseball?

    LOL.

    Santana, Maine, Sabathia, Pelfrey, Niese

Sign KRod and Tex as well

    :D

  4. I'm certainly not advocating trading Niese. He is a nice little prospect (doesn't blow me away, but seems solid). However, I think you can justify moving him if you come to the conclusion you really need a corner outfielder. A lot to me is dependent on Church.
