Jose Sanchez worked 7 innings of "relief" in this one, after Bobby Parnell had had his start aborted due to rain on the 19th. Sanchez fired a 4 hitter, striking out 5 and picking up his 9th win of the season.

All of the offense came off the bat of Salvador Paniagua, who blasted 2 homers, driving in all 4 runs. Jose Coronado had the only multi hit game for the BMets, while Ambi Concepcion (0 for 3, K, .243) and Mike Carp (0 for 2, 2 BBs, K, .297) took 0-fers. By the way, averages for this game mean nothing, since 8 games have been played since the game began.

The Mets had an early 3-1 lead after 2 innings, thanks to RBI from Dan Murphy and Salvador Paniagua, but as mentioned, the bullpen couldn't hold the lead. Dan Murphy and Caleb Stewart (0 for 3, K, .277) took 0-fers, while Jon Malo and Ambi Concepcion had multi hit games.

St. Lucie 4, Brevard County 5 in 11 innings

The Mets fell behind 4-1 after 6, but battled back for 2 in the 7th and one in the 8th to force extra innings, only to fall in 11, as Emary Frederick (in his 2nd inning of work), couldn't retire a batter in the 11th, with help from Lucas Duda's 7th error of the season. Frederick then committed an error with allowed the winning run to score (both on errant pickoff throws).

Ezequiel Carrera continued his torrid July with 2 more hits, raising his season's average to .277, and his July average to .329 (23 for 70), and his 2 month average to .311 (50 for 161), with 2 2b, 4 3b and 4 HR. Josh Thole also continued his torrid July, with 3 more hits, including another double, and another walk, raising his season's average to .303. Savannah 4, Asheville 6

After a string of starts dating back to May 29th, Scott Moviel took his first loss in over 2 months tonight, giving up 5 runs (2 earned) over 3.2 innings, his shortest outing since the aforementioned May 29th outing vs Augusta. In the 9 starts between 5/29 and tonight, he allowed 3 runs once, a run or less 4 times, and more then 3 runs just once, his start prior to tonight's. Moviel pitched 90.1 innings last year, and with his last 2 outings, he is now just over the 100 inning mark, so there may be some definite arm fatigue setting in. We will see just how much the Mets intend to push the 20 year old, considering he still has approximately 7 starts remaining on the season.

After a white hot first 3.5 weeks of July, Greg Veloz has taken 2 straight 0-fers, but he's still having a blockbuster July with a .362 average (34 for 94), not quite the .400 it was 2 days ago, but an 0 for 9 does that in a short sample size. Outside of Veloz, Darren Clark took the only other 0-fer, 0 for 2, 2 BBs, 2 Ks, .255. Sean McCraw had the lone multi hit game.

2b Greg Veloz 0 for 5, run, 2 Ks, .282
rf Casey Craig 1 for 4, BB, .289
ss Juan Lagares 1 for 3, .250
c Sean McCraw 2 for 3, BB, .299

cf Carlos Guzman 1 for 4, run, RBI, K, .264
lf Michael Parker 1 for 4, 2b, 2 RBI, K, .197
Scott Moviel 3.2 IP, 4 H, 5 R, 2 ER, 4 BBs, K, 4.54 era, L (9-8)
Rhiner Cruz 3.2 IP, 5 H, ER, BB, 3 Ks, 3.75 era
Jason LaVorgna 1.2 IP, H, BB, 2 Ks, 3.24 era

Brooklyn 5, Staten Island 2

A night after getting their skulls crushed in, the Cyclones beat the rival Yankees 5-2, powered by 3 homers (John Servidio, Sean Ratliff and Josh Satin). Scott Shaw was excellent over his 5 innings, allowing just 2 hits and a run, striking out 8 for his 3rd win. Stephen Clyne pitched 1.1 scoreless innings for his 6th save.

Ike Davis came out of the game after just 1 AB, no word yet on any injury, though. JR Voyles (0 for 3, run, K, .238) and Ralph Henriquez (0 for 4, K, .196) took 0-fers, while Jordan Abruzzo and Ratliff had 2 hit games.

ss Matt Smith 1 for 4, RBI, .229

3b, 1b Jose Jimenez 1 for 4, .294

Roy Merritt 2.2 IP, 3 H, ER, 3 Ks, 1.27 era
Stephen Clyne 1.1 IP, BB, 5.63 era, SV (6)

Kingsport 8, Elizabethon 9

It was not a good 5th inning for the Mets, and the one who took it on the chin was reliever Manuel Alvarez, who got torched for 4 hits and 4 runs while recording no outs, taking his 3rd loss. Collin McHugh and Jorge Rodriguez also allowed a run each in the 5th, McHugh allowed 4 total over his 4+ innings, on 5 hits (2 hr) and 2 walks.

3 players, Stefan Welch (0 for 5, run, .283), Pedro Zapata (0 for 4, RBI, .203), and Gabriel Zavala (0 for 4, K, .274) took 0-fers, while Dock Doyle and Seth Williams had multi hit games. Each of the first 4 hitters had an RBI, and 6 of the top 7 did, but it proved to not be enough tonight.

2b Kyle Suire 1 for 4, run, 2b, RBI, BB, .275
c Dock Doyle 2 for 5, run, 2b, RBI, K, .336

  2. I do it every month.

Every week isn't easy, but I can try to do a cursory not in depth thing. If I do, it'll be just numbers, not analysis (I have an issue with week to week stuff, the sample sizes are just extremely tiny, even month to month is a small sample size).
