From the Minor League Thread on NYFS:
He grabbed his leg and limped into the dugout.
Severity is obviously unknown.
And for better news, Jon Niese just finished off a CG 6 hit shutout in game 1 of Binghamton's DH. One walk, 8 Ks, lowering his ERA to 3.04, and picking up his 6th win.
Update: Fernando is not in the lineup for Game 2. Ambi Concepcion is playing CF, Jon Malo (really?) is leading off.
UPDATE: Good news everyone. It's being called a "cramp in the hamstring area" - believed to be not very serious, he's day to day.

i dont know if people realize this but we have a lot of really good prospects in the lower minors...and im not just talking about flores and marte. also remember i have never seen these players and am not a scout so of course take my words with a grain of salt.
ReplyDeleteof course we have flores (16 about to turn 17) and marte (17) who are our top 2 prospects in the rookie leagues and performing really well but we also have cesar puello (a top IFA last year but not performing well so far at all so we'll see with him). theres many raw (and some extremely raw) players with nice tools in the Rookie leagues.
at Brooklyn we have brad holt (really good fastball, below average secondary pitches) who's performing real well mainly b/c the hitters at that level can't catch up to his fastball. i think he's a real good prospect but im not jumping on the bandwagon meaning i don't think he's going to be the savior of the franchise like some seem but a good prospect and we'll see how he fares against better competition. then there's reese haven's who is a real smart player with an all-around game. does everything well. injuries worry but we'll see. w/o them should have moved through the system quick. ike davis, our first pick in 2008, isn't performing so well. scouts said he wouldn't do to well with wood but we'll see. has started to walk more. showing no power but we know its there so that will come. there is also 18 year old jenrry mejia who has a very good strike out rate for his age. over 1/inning and he's about 4-5 years younger then the average age of competition there. control isn't to good but of course will get better with time. also boasts a very good go/fo ratio which i believe shows (i hope) a good sinker.
at savannah we have maikel cleto, a 19 year old with good stuff performing well, not great, but well. good go/fo ratio suggests a good sinker. scott moviel, towering righthander, boasts a terrific sinker and is performing well as of late. vineyard has been hurt so we'll hold out on him. stinson is a decent prospect, might make it as a 5th starter/long reliever. rustich could shoot through the system as a reliever but is trying to become a starter. trying to develop a third pitch i heard.
ReplyDeletefor the position players theres 3. veloz, lagares, and pena. lagares just came back from injury (i believe) so we'll hold out on his performance but has good tools. veloz is performing real well this year and tools are definately turning into skills, lots of steals and good power showing. making a little better contact then last year. pena, still just 18 (about to turn 19), is showing a lot more power. reports say he is also a better defender this year as well. all 3 of the position player prospects are also making more contact this year then lasts although the strikeout rate remains teh same and plate discipline hasn't really grew. like the growth though
at st. lucie, Carr, Niesen, Owen, Gee, are guys with decent arms. we'll see how they develop. Carr has some good action though.
ReplyDeletemost of the prospects on this team are from the position players. shawn bowman is back but we'll see if he can stay healthy. good power numbers and i believe he was a real good defender back then (don't remember). still only 23!! lucas duda has real good power potential and has good plate discipline. hector pellot is one of those guys who does most of the things real well but without the tools, he's hurt right now.
Then of course theres Ruben Tejada. many people are scared off by the fact that he isn't hitting for a high average and b/c of the flores hype. but to be honest most of these people don't know anything. this kid is only 18!! and in high-A already. plate discipline is amazing. how can you not love this kid (well low average and power). his plate discipline is extremely mature for his age. the only thing is that his other tools were a little rushed (contact mainly, not worried about the power at 18, especially from a short stop). savannah would have served his bat good but he was performing well during this slump (and yes its a slump b/c even his plate discipline is disappeared). also heard he is a real good defender. extremely excited about him, one of our top prospects.
at binghamton, theres antonini who just came from st. lucie. control pitcher so we'll see how he does in the higher levels. eddie kunz started off slow but has really turned it up. niese, read his other stuff and control isn't that good. but has a good curve/average fastball/below average slider-and change up. hopefully he'll have time to develop. remember people want him up now but how many prospects actually do good at 21? i feel like he should be up around 23-24. i know people will crucify me for saying that but its true. give him time to refine his game.
ReplyDeletethen theres the position players. murphy has a good bat, his switch to 2b could be huge for his career if he can be an adequate/above average defender b/c of his bat. carp/evans are below average defenders with above average bats. carp has been in a slump so we'll see how he gets out of it. i think evans has better potential (not b/c he's in mlb) but b/c he's rail thin and when he fills out will have a lot more power then carp. he's also shown decent plate discipline.
then theres fernando. tremendous prospect. terrific bat. his splits are really good (i'll talk about them in the next post). at 19, he has a .290-.295 average while in the middle of an injury plagued season. if he's healthy watch him take off, ala jose reyes. tools are there. has improved strikeouts dramatically since the beginning but thats understandable b/c he didn't play winterball b/c of the hamate injury. don't doubt this kid.
theres a site guys that you should really start looking at. minorleaguesplits.com (i think and no i'm not from that site). i was looking at it yesterday and saw some interesting stuff. it gives you a lot of important statistics. i was looking at important statistics such as Line drive % (shows good, clean contact) and saw that guys like flores and marte had low ones and that their average could've been aided by bad rookie league defense. then i noticed other players at that level and their averages are about the same to. fernando has a very decent one and he's been injured most of the year. his last month he's had a very good LD% and Fly ball %. i wish they could show stats on different pitches, but i guess on minorleague stats that would be to hard (would be great though). guys like pena, veloz, and tejada had low ones but their babip were low also so i think their averages are true and good for their ages. the only real prospect with good LD% and FB% was jay bruce and his were astronomical so im assuming he was hot as he's cooled off in the majors. other top prospects have very low LD% and FB% and fernando has a good one all while being a lot younger then everyone else. i just wish he'd stop getting injured. i do feel though that once he has a full good season of low injuries he'll break out big time.
ReplyDeleteall in all, i think we have decent prospects. far away from the majors. if we don't trade prospects i feel that in a year we'll jump drastically and in 2 years with the certain graduation of fmart and kunz, it will be a very good one. in 4 years (i know its minor leagues, so 4 years is a lot) we'll be among the top.
ReplyDeletemy top prospects would be like this
1. fmart
2. kunz (mlb ready) (sorry switch niese and kunz-niese's potential is a lot better then kunz's readiness)
3. niese (who i still believe is 2-3 years away)
4. evans (close to majors/nothing special)
5. holt- good fastball with control on it. when he gains good secondary offerings will shoot through the system)
6. havens (when he comes back will go quick through the system)
7. murphy (same as evans)
8. tejada (will pass murphy by next year)
7. carp (bat can't pick up for defense but is closer to the majors)
8. flores (tremendous prospect, will shoot through the system. too far though)
9. pena
10. parnell (yes, at the top we are weak lol. but close to the majors, 3-4 years away-to raw even though he's already at bingo)
11. marte
12. moviel
13a.b. veloz/lagares
14 (should be 15 and so on ) cleto
15. duda
16. rustich
to late gonna get off lol-sorry its a thursday nite. maybe i'll get back to my opinion tomorrow as im not even close to being done.
GREAT SITE YOU RECOMMENDED.
ReplyDeleteUh - wow. Level by level info dump.
ReplyDeleteSee - we would do this, except we do it once preseason, the MPH System Audit. I've been kicking around the idea of a midseason mini audit, but haven't really discussed it with David.
Oh yeah, I love minorleaguesplits.com, I use it all the time. I'm just waiting for their 2007 splits and back years to come back, so I can do some comparsions from 07/08 in the improve/regress department.
