Jose Sanchez got oblierated for 10 hits and 8 runs in 3.1 innings, and the bullpen wasn't a whole lot better, giving up 9 hits and 7 runs in 4.2 innings as the Mets were overwhelmed by the RockCats.
The offense did managed to gather 11 hits, 5 walks and 7 runs, but were in such an early hole, they did most of that in extensive garboge time [/Marv Albert]. The Mets were 4 for 12 with RISP and left 9 men on base. Emmanuel Garcia had another multi hit game, his 4th in a row and 5th in the last 6, he's 17 for his last 46 to push his average back up to the mid .270s. DJ Wabick and Jake Eigsti also had multi hit games, while Ruben Tejada, who had been white hot coming into today, took the only 0-fer, going 0 for 4 to drop his average down to .274.

Prospect Focus: Jordany Valdespin
Splits courtesy www.minorleaguesplits.com
Valdespin is a lefty batter
The Mets signed Valdespin as an 18 year old during the 2007 Internation Free Agent signing period, and assigned him to their DSL team that summer, where he hit .245/.369/.338/.707, 34 for 139, 23 runs, 4 2b, 3 3b, HR, 16 RBI, 24/26 BB/K, 8/12 SBs, with a .187 K rate, and a corresponding .9230 BB/K ratio.
The next summer, the Mets sent Valdespin stateside to the rookie level Gulf Coast Mets, where he hit .284/.319/.440/.760, 38 for 134, 23 runs, 6 2b, 3 3b, 3 HR, 22 RBI, 7/10 BB/K, 9/11 SBs, with a .074 K rate, and a .7000 BB/K. Against lefties, he hit just .263/.263/.316/.579 (5 for 19, 2b). Against RHP, he hit .267/.313/.429/.742 (28 for 105, 2 2b, 3 3b, 3 HR, 7/7 BB/K).
For the 2009 season, the Mets decided to jump Valdespin to Savannah, despite rather pedestrian numbers in the GCL, and early on, he justified that decision in a HUGE way, getting off to an unbelieveable start, with a .385/.406/.615/1.021 line in April, until he was suspended for conduct deterimental to the team. Upon his return, he middled around for 16 games, but over his last 5 games, he is once again freakishly hot (11 for 22, 5 2b, RBI, 1/7 BB/K, 2 SBs). Overall this season, as of May 31st (before the game today), Valdespin is hitting .313/.358/.463/.821, 46 for 147, 29 runs, 9 2b, 2 3b, 3 HR, 18 RBI, 11/31 BB/K, 7/9 SBs, with a .211 K rate, and a corresponding .3548 BB/K ratio.
Valdespin has improved markedly against LHP this year, he's hitting .306/.390/.361/.751 against them this year (11 for 36, 6 runs, 3b, 4 RBI, 5/8 BB/K, SB, .222 K rate, .6250 BB/K ratio), while against RHP, he's hitting .315/.347/.495/.843 (35 for 111, 23 runs, 9 2b, 3b, 3 HR, 14 RBI, 6/23 BB/K, 6/8 SBs, .207 K rate, .2608 BB/K ratio).

Another Dylan Owen start, another multi run performance. Another Binghamton game, another 2 hits for Josh Thole. And so it goes for the Mets, who saw Owen plummet to 0-5 with a 6.97 era after today's rough 5 inning 6 run performance, but on the flip side, saw Thole collect 2 more hits, raising his average to .369. Almost as, if not more, impressive was Ruben Tejada, who had 2 hits himself, and is now batting .281 in Binghamton. Emmanuel Garcia, Lucas Duda and DJ Wabick also had multi hit games for the Mets, but it was to no avail. Nick Evans, Shawn Bowman (0 for 4, 2 Ks, .271), and Jose Coronado (0 for 4, .240) took 0-fers for the Mets, who collected 11 hits and 3 walks, and were an impressive 5 for 12 with RISP, and left 8 on base.

Josh Thole and Ryan Coultas had HUGE games today for the Mets, as they blanked the Rock Cats 6-0 to move to 21-24, 5 games back of Connecticut for the Northern Division lead. Thole, Emmanuel Garcia, Shawn Bowman and DJ Wabick had multi hit games for the Mets, while Coultas had his longest professional pitching outing of his career, a 2 hitter over 8 innings for his 4th win.
Garcia drove in 3 runs for the Mets, who pounded out 12 hits and drew 5 walks, en route to 6 runs, and a very good 5 for 14 showing with RISP. They did leave 10 on base, though. Lucas Duda (0 for 3, 2 BBs, .285), and Jose Coronado (0 for 4, K, .261) took 0-fers for the Mets.

Two Jefry Marte homers weren't enough tonight, as the Gnats fell 3-2 to Asheville, dropping to 24-23, 3 games behind Charleston in the Southern Division. Marte broke out of a long long slump in a HUGE way with 3 hits, including his second and third homers of the season, but it was in a losing cause. Jordany Valdespin also had a 3 hit game atop the lineup, but in between were 6 0-fers and a 1 fer (Sean Ratliff went 1 for 4 with 2 Ks, he's hitting .314 on the season).
Kyle Allen's third start (in 9 APPs) of the year was uneven, he allowed 3 runs (2 earned) over 4 innings, but allowed 7 hits and 2 walks, and had 2 wild pitches.

I'm debating whether I'm going to follow the draft here, or there. The layout is such that it would be MUCH easier to just Tweet each draftpick, but then you guys would have to have two windows open instead of one. What say you? Debate it on the chat box for the next week, I'll announce my decision on the 5th.
Happy 1500 posts to us.

The BMets showed tremendous fight today, repeatedly coming back from multi run deficits, but they couldn't seal the deal, thanks in large part to an abysmal relief outing from Eric Brown, who gave up 4 runs of his own (and allowed 2 IHR to score). Tobi Stoner started and was very effective, even if wild, allowing 3 runs on 5 hits and 4 walks in 6.1 innings. Roy Merritt allowed a run on a hit in 0.1 innings, before Eric Brown's awful outing began. Stephen Clyne pitched a perfect top of the 9th.
The Mets offense had 11 hits and drew 2 walks, and were a very good 5 for 10 with RISP, leaving just 3 men on base. Emmanuel Garcia, Josh Thole, DJ Wabick and Ruben Tejada had multi hit games for the Mets, while Lucas Duda and Shawn Bowman (hitting 45 in the order) were a combined 0 for 7 with 3 Ks.

5/27 Minor League Report! TEJADA, NIEUWENHUIS, NIESEN, VALDESPIN!
Buffalo 3, Lehigh Valley 5
Jon Niese had yet another godawful performance for the Bisons this season, tonight giving up 5 runs in 6 innings. As a sign of how beyond pathetic he's been this year, tonight's outing lowered his ERA under 8. (By the way, if you think I'm being overtly critical, keep in mind I LOVE Jon Niese, have since we drafted him in 2005).
The Bisons had 9 hits on the night, and went 2 for 6 with RISP, leaving 6 on base. Argenis Reyes and Jesus Feliciano had multi hit games, while Michel Abreu (0 for 4, .214) and Mike Lamb (0 for 4, .183) took 0-fers.

The Mets faced one of the Giants best prospects, Tim Alderson today, and Ruben Tejada was 3 for 3 off him, great sign for the 19 year old shortstop. In fact, the 4 thru 8 hitters for the Mets each had multi hit games, and were a combined 13 for 22 with 5 runs scored and 5 RBI. Every Met had a hit, but they were a putrid 4 for 17 with RISP, and left 14 of their 21 runners on base.
Michael Antonini had a GREAT first 6 innings, allowing just a run on 3 hits with 8 Ks. Then he came out for the 7th and allowed 2 hits and a walk, runners which Adam Bostick allowed to score, blowing a 3-1 Met lead. After Bostick, the Mets bullpen shut down the Defenders, allowing just 2 hits and 2 walks in 4 innings as the offense came back from 5-3 down with runs in the 8th and 9th to tie, and 11th to win.

Jenrry Mejia had a rough 4th inning today, giving up 2 hits and 2 walks and 3 runs (2 earned, due to an Ike Davis error), but on the positive side, he did strike out 8. Manuel Alvarez inherited two runners from Nick Waechter and allowed 1 to score to blow a save, and then Jose De La Torre allowed one in the bottom of the 8th (on a wild pitch strike 3) to take the loss.
The Mets were held to just 6 hits, but did draw 4 walks and hit 3 homers, while going 1 for 7 with RISP and leaving 5 on base. Kirk Nieuwenhuis had the only multi hit game for the Mets, while Carlos Guzman (0 for 4, K, .283), Ike Davis (0 for 4, 3 Ks, .275), Francisco Pena (0 for 4, 2 Ks, .207), and Luis Rivera (0 for 4, K, .125) all took 0-fers.

FERNANDO TO THE MAJORS
Jose Reyes and Ryan Church have finally been placed on the DL, after Omar Minaya today learned a DL exists.
Fernando Martinez and some scrub have been called up.
For the sake of all our sanities, please don't jump if Fernando starts out 0 for 12 with 7 Ks, mmmmmkay? And please don't proclaim him a bust.
PS: A little info on those of you who comment on my posts - I'll address the comments on the chat box, so keep an eye on that...
BTW, Fernando's hitting 6th today.

Buffalo 8, Lehigh Valley 7
Dillon Gee had a rough outing today, snapping a streak of 3 good starts in his last 4 (those 3 good starts totalling 20.1 innings, 12 hits, 2 earned runs, 7 walks and 16 Ks). Today, he gave up 4 hits and 4 runs in 4 innings. Brandon Knight also had a bad outing, giving up 3 runs on 6 hits in 3.2 innings, but the Bisons overcame the poor pitching thanks to an offensive explosion of 8 runs on 15 hits and a walk. The Bisons went 5 for 14 with RISP and left 8 on base.
Cory Sullivan, Javier Valentin, Mike Lamb and Robinson Cancel had multi hit games for the Bisons, while Jason Cooper (0 for 3, run, BB, K, .195) took the only 0-fer.

Despite an awful awful inept showing with RISP (2 for 19), the Mets twice battled back from 2 run deficits (2-0 and 4-2), rallying to beat the Rock Cats 5-4 this afternoon. The Mets came to bat in the bottom of the 9th down 2-0, but Ruben Tejada singled in DJ Wabick, who'd reached on an error, and then Emmanuel Garcia's 3U fielder's choice brought in Josh Thole (who'd drawn a walk PHing), tying the game at 2. Roy Merritt, who had pitched a perfect 9th, gave up 2 in the 10th, due to his own error, once more putting the Mets down 2. But, Nick Evans (who had been 0 for 4 with 3 Ks to that point) doubled to lead off the inning and scored on Lucas Duda's double. An error brought Duda home to tie the game and send it to the 11th, where again it was an Evans hit which keyed the inning. After a leadoff single by Emmanuel Garcia, Evans stroked a 1 out single to right, setting the stage for Josh Petersen's bases loaded walk, giving the Mets a thrilling 5-4 victory.
Jose Sanchez had his best outing of the year, giving up just 2 runs on 8 hits in 8 innings, but he took a ND. Adam Bostick pitched a scoreless 11th for the win. Emmanuel Garcia, Nick Evans and Ruben Tejada had multi hit games, while Shawn Bowman (0 for 5, K, .274), DJ Wabick (0 for 4, run, 2 Ks, .292) and Carl Loadenthal (0 for 3, BB, .242) took 0-fers. As I mentioned, the Mets were an absymally terrible (use whatever adjectives you want) 2 for 19 with RISP, and they left 14 on base (although, oddly, that number counts "leaving" the bases loaded off the walk off walk).

Savannah went up against 19 year old Brad Dydalewicz today, who coming into the game was 2-0 with a 0.47 era. Dydalewicz carried a no hitter into the 5th inning until Wilmer Flores broke it up with a single. However, Elvin Ramirez for the Gnats allowed 2 runs on 6 hits in 5 innings to take a tough loss, as the Gnats couldn't touch Dydalewicz. The bullpen for the Gnats was basically perfect, firing 4 hitless innings behind Ramirez, but the Gnats could not get over the hump, falling 2-1. They went 1 for 7 with RISP and left 7 men on base, and the offense generated just 4 hits, but drew 5 walks. Juan Lagares (1 for 4, K, .291), Eric Campbell (1 for 2, run, 2 BBs, .276), and Wilmer Flores (2 for 4, .246) had the hits for the Gnats, everyone else took 0-fers.

How good have the last two days been for us? We got to listen to that cock gobbling steaming pile of dog feces pontificate on how Beltran isn't a "leader" on Sunday, and then last night speaks for itself. Lets hope tonight's better, or alot of psychiatrists are going to be very happy tomorrow.

5/17 Minor League Report! GEE, Duda, FERNANDEZ!
Buffalo 2, Pawtucket 3 in 11 innings

St. Lucie 9-11-4, Fort Myers 11-17-4 in 13 innings
This was an ugly back and forth game, with a total of 20 runs on 28 hits, the ugly part is that half the combined runs (10 for you mathamatically challenged people ;)) were unearned, due to the 8 combined errors. Kevin Goldstein on Josh Thole's defense
Things that don't show up in the boxscore
Josh Thole, C, Mets (Double-A Binghamton)
Thursday's stats: 5-for-5, 2B, 2 R, RBI
Thole was a catcher in high school, but didn't begin to don the tools of ignorance professionally until last year. He's an excellent contact hitter with a good approach, and his .349/.421/.468 line is opening some eyes this year, but not as much as his defense, which has come leaps and bounds to the point where scouts really think he could stay there – which makes him a definite prospect.
That is great news, because the bat is definitely legit.

5/15 Minor League Report! Fernando, Thole, Rustich!
Buffalo 6, Gwinnett 5, Game 1
Michael Antonini's meteoric rise through the system took him to the highest minor league level tonight, a year after he was pitching for the Savannah Sand Gnats in the South Atlantic League, the lowest full season league in organized baseball. And while he has struggled in Binghamton this year, the ascent itself is quite an accomplishment.
He ran into massive trouble with the AAA Braves, though, giving up 5 runs on 8 hits and 2 walks in 3.1 innings, taking an ND. Eddie Kunz worked 1.2 innings behind Antonini for the win.
Angel Pagan, Ramon Martinez and Javier Valentin had multi hit games for the Bisons, while Willy Mo Pena (0 for 3, RBI, BB, 2 Ks, .176) and Argenis Reyes (0 for 3, K, .284) took 0-fers. The Bisons had 9 hits and drew 4 walks, but went a putrid 1 for 11 with RISP and left 9 men on base.

5/14 Minor League Report! I'm Tired, THOLE, FAMILIA!
Binghamton 8, Trenton 7
Josh Thole BUSTED out of a slump in a HUGE way, going 5 for 5 and igniting the Mets decisive 3 run bottom of the 9th with a leadoff single. He would score on Josh Petersen's game tying homer. Later in the 9th, Ruben Tejada hit a grounder to second, which was booted for an error, scoring DJ Wabick with the winning run. Mark Kiger, Thole, and Petersen had multi hit games, while Emmanuel Garcia (0 for 4, run, BB, 3 Ks, .248), Shawn Bowman (0 for 4, RBI, BB, 2 Ks, .300), Carl Loadenthal (0 for 3, run, 2 BBs, 2 Ks, .255) and Ruben Tejada (0 for 5, K, .240) all took 0-fers. The Mets had 12 hits and drew 5 walks, and were 3 for 10 with RISP, leaving 11 men on base.
Dylan Owen put the Mets in an early 7-4 hole, but Eric Brown did a simply phenominal job in long relief, going 6.1 innings, allowing just 2 hits and a walk, earning the win after the Mets walked off in the 9th.

Do I need to say anything? OK, I will. Fort Myers had 27 ABs with RISP. Think about that, a perfect game features 27 ABs, and Fort Myers had that many with RISP. Oh, they had 14 hits in those 27 ABs. Every pitcher the Mets sent out there got touched up, with Matias Carrillo taking a severe beatdown, 6 runs in an inning of work. Scott Shaw (the starter), Nick Waechter and Jose De La Torre each gave up 4 runs. Ouchies for their ERAs. Also - all the runs (all NINETEEN) were earned. Double ouchies.
On the positive side, Reese Havens had a breakout game, he'd been mired in a deep slump prior to tonight (9 for 43; 3 for 32). He broke out in a big way (not as big as Josh Thole, though), going 3 for 5 and driving in all 4 of the Met runs. Hector Pellot continued his awesome May with another multi hit game (his 7th in the last 10 games, hitting .444 over that span (16 for 36), and for May, he's hitting .444/.535/.750/1.285). The Mets went 2 for 8 with RISP and left 9 on base.

Jeurys. Familia. Familiarize yourself with this name if you haven't already. He carried a no hitter until 2 outs in the 7th, when he gave up a solo homer and was removed from the game. It was his longest outing of the season, and one of the longest of his pro career. And keep in mind, he plays all season at 19 (turning 20 on 10/10).
The Gnats had 12 hits and drew a ridiculous 10 walks en route to 8 runs, they went just 4 for 16 with RISP and left General McArthur's army on base (16).
