5/8 Minor League Report! FERNANDO, Thole, FAMILIA!

I got this via comment on MetsMerized (which is an all purpose Mets blog, which everyone should definitely visit) on the 4/30 Minor League Report (I post it there, as well as NYFS and my blog, MetsProspectHub, and yeah, it's been a couple weeks, but um...I just figured out how to find my posts and reply to comments on MMO :blush:)

I was at the Port St Lucie game last night (meaning the April 30th game). There were some impressive highlights. Three doubles back to back to back in the 3rd inning including a huge drive by Ike Davis to the base of the CF wall on the fly. The homers by Havens and Guzman were impressive opposite field drives over the left field wall with Haven’s especially impressive as it was really high and it was great to see the Reds LF turn and run to the wall only to have them clear it in both cases. Havens made a really sharp bang - bang play on a hard grounder to his right as he moved into to the hole and snagged it and got the runner on a powerful throw with a step to spare. Havens did botch a throw badly over the 1B’s head in the 7th allowing the Reds to tie the game. But he doubled in the 10th and scored the winning run on Guzman’s drive over the LF fence. Niesen pitched well giving up 3 hits and 2 runs in the first 2 innings, but then settled down and put up 4 goose eggs on the board from the 3rd to the 6th innings. He had only 1 runner on base via a BB over a stretch of 14 batters. He had 3 up and 3 down in the 3rd, 5th, and 6th, with only the one walk in the 4th. It turned out to be a better game than I expected and was an enjoyable evening out in Port St Lucie on a 1 week vacation at the shore.

5/8 Minor League Report:

Buffalo 4, Norfolk 1

The Tides only had 4 hits today, and star prospect Matt Wieters took an 0-fer...oh wait...

The Bisons won tonight behind another big game from Fernando Martinez, who had another multi hit game, raising his average to .300. Martinez is now 13 for his last 27, a blistering .481 over his last 8 games, with 4 2b, 3b, 2 HR, 8 RBI, and a 2/2 BB/K ratio. Cory Sullivan (0 for 3, run, BB, .214), Willy Mo Pena (0 for 4, 2 Ks, .185), Mike Lamb (0 for 3, .088), Nick Evans (0 for 3, 2 Ks, .097) and Jose Coronado (0 for 3, .133) all took 0-fers. The Bisons were 3 for 9 with RISP, and left 4 men on base.

Brandon Knight was on point for a second straight outing, going 8 innings, allowing a run on 4 hits. Elmer Dessens got his 2nd straight save with a perfect 9th.

A 3rd inning 2 out Ruben Tejada run scoring error opened the floodgates against Dylan Owen, who gave up a grand slam to the next batter, which was all the scoring the Thunder would need. Owen went 6 innings, allowing 4 hits and those 5 runs (all unearned), but he walked 3, running his season total to 17 in 30.1 innings (a much too high 5.04 per 9 innings). Owen may be (as I've intimated before) topping out in AA. John Madden continues to suck in relief, by the way.

The Mets had 8 hits and drew 4 walks, but also had 13 strikeouts, and left 10 on base, while going 1 for 6 with RISP. Josh Petersen (0 for 4, K, .246), Mark Kiger (0 for 3, BB, K, .245) and Ruben Tejada (0 for 2, run, 2 BBs, K, .268) took 0-fers, while Josh Thole and Shawn Bowman had multi hit games.

St. Lucie 3, Fort Myers 4

The top third of the Mets order (Veloz 0 for 5, 2 Ks, .202, Nieuwenhuis 0 for 3, BB, K, .241, Havens 0 for 3, BB, K, .269) went a combined 0 for 11 with 4 Ks. Carlos Guzman (0 for 3, run, BB, K, .279) also took an 0-fer, while Ralph Henriquez and Hector Pellot had multi hit games. The Mets were a measly 1 for 9 with RISP, and left 7 runners on base.

Nick Carr gave up an UER in the 7th, thanks to first a throwing error by Henriquez on a SB attempt, and then a throwing error by Nieuwenhuis after he fielded Henriquez' errant throw. Scott Shaw started and was decent in his outing, giving up 8 hits and 3 runs over 6 innings.

Wendy Rosa wrecked another fantastic Jeurys Familia outing, by giving up 3 runs on 2 hits and 2 walks in 0.2 innings, turning a 3-1 Gnats lead into a 4-3 Greenville lead, and eventual win. Familia was outstanding again tonight, allowing just a run on 7 hits in 6 innings, actually raising his ERA to 1.21.

The Gnats had 8 hits and drew 2 walks, and were 3 for 7 with RISP, but left 7 men on base. Wilmer Flores, Eric Campbell (0 for 3, run, BB, .273), and Juan Lagares (0 for 3, BB, 2 Ks, .256) took 0-fers, while Jefry Marte and Raul Reyes had multi hit games.
