I fail to see any better options out there. Or if there are, you're going to trade some real good prospects for a chance to save a season which spiralled out of control due to injury and was compounded by handing the Phils/Yankees 3 games in a row.
My view is, there is no season to save. We're down 2 SPs, our 2nd and 4th best offensive players (both All Stars who can light it up in their own way), down a lockdown 8th inning setup man, and now there are light concerns about our ace. You CANNOT plug the holes on this team, there are too many with too few realistic trade options.
Lets say you can trade 3 of the following for Dunn: Duda, Kunz, Stoner, Tejada, Bowman, Antonini, Niese, Church.
That solves one problem, and you're out 3 chips.
What's next on our list? We need a good backup middle infielder (Cora's hitting like Wilson Valdez since coming back from his injury).
2 of Duda, Kunz, Stoner, Tejada, Bowman, Antonini, Niese, Church for DeRosa, he slides in at SS.
Next? Reliable SP. Gonna have to dip into your untouchables. Holt, Mejia, Fernando, Thole (for me, he is), Wilmer.
Fernando, Thole, whichever 2 of the above 7 are left, Green for Peavy.
Done. 7 C/B prospects, 2 A/B prospects, MLB reliever gone. Dunn, Peavy, DeRosa here. How good is that team compared to the one we have now? And then at what cost?
See where I'm going with this? All of that to TRY and salvage a season which Lemony Snicket would laugh at. None of those trades make us locks for anything.
