Binghamton 5, New Britain 8

Jose Sanchez had a very rough outing tonight, giving up 5 runs (4 earned) on 8 hits in 5.2 innings, taking his 6th loss. However, as has happened too many times this season across various levels, the runs that the bullpen gave up ended up being the difference, as Casey Hoorelbeke (1 UER) and Elvys Quezada (2 ER) combined to give up 3 runs over the final 2+ innings of the game.

Mike Carp continued to fight his way out of a 110 or so AB slump with a solo homer and walk. The top 2 in the order went a combined 0 for 9 with 5 Ks. In addition to them, Caleb Stewart (0 for 2, run, 2 BBs, K, .274) and Ambi Concepcion (0 for 4, K, .253). Josh Petersen and Jon Malo had multi hit games.

The Mets lead 6-2 after 7, but then gave up 3 in the 8th and 2 in the 9th. The damage was caused by Ryan Coultas (3) and German Marte (2). Dillon Gee pitched brilliantly for 6 innings before the bullpen meltdown, allowing just a run on 7 hits, striking out 6.

The offense held up their end of the deal, pounding out 12 hits and 5 runs, with the 2-6 hitters each having multi hit games. The bottom third of the order (Peeter Ramos, Joe Holden and Luis Rivera) went a combined 0 for 11 with 5 Ks, but it didn't matter from an offensive point of view.

Savannah 6, Augusta 9

Greg Veloz is offically en fuego x 100. Another 2 hits tonight raised his average to .289, the highest it's been since the first week of April. Veloz had 2 singles, and scored a run in leading the Gnats offense to 6 runs on 11 hits. Casey Craig, Sean McCraw and Juan Lagares also had multi hit games, while Francisco Pena (0 for 3, RBI, BB, K, .258), Nick Giarraputo (0 for 2, 2 Ks, .258), and Darren Clark (0 for 4, .250) took 0-fers. Giarraputo replaced Lagares at shortstop in the middle of the 5th inning, after Lagares committed his 11th error of the season.

The offensive outburst was not enough, because Scott Moviel got bombed for 8 hits and 5 runs over 4 innings, striking out 3 and allowing a HR. As pointed out during the last Moviel start, Moviel's exceeded his innings pitched from last season, and is unquestionably hitting a wall. With likely 6 more starts to go, it will be interesting to see how many more IP Moviel gets this season.

Brooklyn 1, Staten Island 6

Scott Shaw got bombed for 6 runs on 7 hits in 1.2 innings, putting the offensively challenged Cyclones into an early hole they would not climb out of. Matias Carrillo in long relief was excellent, giving up just 3 hits in 4.1 innings, striking out 7. Jim Fuller returned with 2 scoreless innings, and Wendy Rosa finished off the game.

The offense managed just 6 hits and a run (on a JR Voyles 9th inning HR). Matt Smith (0 for 4, .218), Jordan Abruzzo (0 for 4, K, .253), and Seth Williams (0 for 3, .136) took 0-fers, 6 players had a hit apiece.
