6/17 Minor League Report! Evans, CARP, NIESE, OWEN, FLORES!

New Orleans 11, Iowa 3

The Zs, minus a manager and pitching coach, put up 4 in the first and 7 in the 5th, rolling to an easy 11-3 victory. 4 players had multi hit games, while Abraham Nunez (0 for 3, run, 2 BBs, K, .185) took the only 0-fer. What a flat out disgrace that he was ever up with the big club. Michel Abreu started at 1b, but left the game after being plunked with a pitch. This *may* open the door for a Mike Carp callup to New Orleans (we can only hope).

Nelson Figueroa was good tonight, allowing 4 hits and 3 runs (1 earned) over 6 innings. Juan Padilla and Tim McNab finished off the game.

Anderson Hernandez (ss) 1 for 3, run, RBI, 2 BBs, K, .188
Argenis Reyes (2b) 1 for 4, run, RBI, K, .290
Raul Gonzalez (rf) 3 for 4, run, HR, 3 RBI, K, .393
Val Pascucci (rf, 1b) 2 for 4, 2 runs, BB, K, .319
Raul Casanova (c) 1 for 5, run, 2b, K, .444
John Rodriguez (lf) 2 for 5, run, 2b, 3 RBI, K, .200
Jesus Feliciano (cf) 2 for 5, run, 2 RBI, .294
Nelson Figueroa 6 IP, 4 H, 3 R, ER, 2 BBs, 9 Ks, HR, 3.18 era, W (3-1)
Juan Padilla 2 IP, H, BB, K, 5.63 era
Tim McNab IP, H, K, 2.89 era

Binghamton 10, Erie 1

Yeah, if you're thinking you've seen this script before, you have. It was during the second week of the season when the Trinity was first dubbed that by me, they went on a rampage and Erie happened to bear the brunt of it. Well, Erie's gotta be wondering what they did to piss the Mets off, Binghamton's scored 7+ runs in 6 of their 7 meets this season, their team AVG is over .400 vs Erie. You know, I normally don't do this (and they likely won't see it), but I want to give a shout out to the Binghamton PBP team on 1290 AM WNBF, I've only listened a couple times during Niese starts, but they do a really good job with stats. Great job, guys.

Anyway, it was same old same old, the Mets pounded out 14 hits, with 6 of the 9 regulars getting multi hit games, and 2 players taking 0-fers, Caleb Stewart (0 for 3, 2 BBs, K, .260) and Jose Coronado (0 for 4, 2 runs, BB, .262). Jon Niese started and was brilliant, scattering 3 hits over 6 innings, while striking out a season high 9. He showed good consistency with his changeup, which is key for him, since it is his 3rd pitch. Jose Sanchez (who only went an inning in that suspended game) pitched a couple, and Eddie Kunz finished off the gem.

Jon Malo (3b) 3 for 4, 3 runs, 2 2b, 4 RBI, BB, .255
Nick Evans (1b) 2 for 5, 3 RBI, 2 Ks, .304
Mike Carp (lf) 1 for 2, run, RBI, 3 BBs, K, .362/.435/.555/.989 (28/36 BB/K)
Ambi Concepcion (cf) 2 for 3, run, 2 2b, RBI, 2 BBs, .251
Saloman Manriquez (c) 2 for 5, 2 Ks, .269
Josh Petersen (dh) 2 for 5, K, .336
Emmanuel Garcia (2b) 2 for 4, 3 runs, 2b, RBI, BB, .211
Jon Niese 6 IP, 3 H, 2 BBs, 9 Ks, 2.93 era, W (5-4)
Jose Sanchez 2 IP, BB, 3 Ks, 4.37 era
Eddie Kunz IP, 2 H, R, K, 3.86 era

St. Lucie 7, Jupiter 6 in 10 innings, Game 1

Angel Calero's second FSL start was atrocious, he lasted just 2.2 innings, giving up 6 hits and 4 runs, including a homer. However, the offense rallied back to take a 6-5 lead after Elvys Quezada and Stephen Clyne allowed just a run on 3 hits in 3.1 innings. Casey Hoorelbeke, however, blew the save, and then in his 4th inning of work, blew the game.

He Who Appears and Disappears appeared to play third today and got 3 hits. Of course, we're talking about Shawn Bowman, who's been plagued (unfortunately) with back injuries in each of the last 3 seasons. At one time, the hype surrounding Bowman included the famous line "He will force David Wright to move to first base." Well, that hasn't quite worked out, but Bowman, who reached the FSL at age 20, is now 23, and is pretty much at his make or break point, through no fault of his own. He's always flashed plus raw power, jacking 17 HR in just 326 ABs in 2005 (albeit with 110 Ks and just 22 BBs).

Anyway, outside of Bowman, 2 other players had multi hit games, while Ruben Tejada (0 for 5, BB, K, .230) took the only 0-fer.

Ezequiel Carrera (cf) 1 for 4, RBI, BB, K, .256
Lucas Duda (1b) 1 for 5, K, .275
Victor Mendez (rf) 2 for 4, run, 2b, BB, K (A+ debut)
Brian Burgamy (lf) 1 for 4, run, BB, 2 Ks, .296
DJ Wabick (dh) 2 for 4, run, 3b, 2 RBI, .273
Shawn Bowman (3b) 3 for 5, 2 runs, 2b, RBI (season debut)
JR Voyles (2b) 1 for 4, BB, K, .257
Jason Jacobs (c) 1 for 2, 2 RBI, .233
Josh Thole (ph, c) 1 for 3, K, .263
Angel Calero 2.2 IP, 6 H, 4 ER, 2 BBs, 2 Ks, HR, 9 era
Elvys Quezada 1.1 IP, H, BB, 3.75 era
Stephen Clyne 2 IP, 2 H, ER, 2 BBs, 7.90 era
Casey Hoorelbeke 3.1 IP, 4 H, 2 ER, K, 2 HR, 3.75 era, BS (3), L (0-3)

St. Lucie 4, Jupiter 1, Game 2

Dylan Owen went the distance in this one, a masterful 7 innings of 6 hit 1 run ball, striking out 8. He picked up his 5th win of the season, lowering his ERA to 3.20.

The offense was paced by Ruben Tejada getting on base all 4 trips, with 2 hits and 2 walks, but he wasn't alone, the Mets had 10 hits, with 2 other players getting multi hit games. Lucas Duda is in a miserable slump which has lasted the whole month, he's 10 for 52 in June with 15 Ks, and a paltry .622 OPS (.192/.333/.288). Today he was 0 for 3 with a walk and 2 Ks, his average has plunged to .272. Luis Rivera, who came in for Victor Mendez also took an 0-fer (0 for 2, .248), and JR Voyles also had no hits, he was 0 for 3, run, K, .250. Unlike Duda, Ruben Tejada's been on fire during the month of June, he is 18 for 56 during the month, a .321 average, with 4 walks and only 5 strikeouts, his OPS is .764. His season's BB/K is a respectable 23/41, considering his age and level played last year.

Ezequiel Carrera (cf) 1 for 3, RBI, .257
Ruben Tejada (ss) 2 for 2, run, 3b, RBI, 2 BBs, .236
Josh Thole (c) 1 for 2, RBI, BB, .266
Brian Burgamy (dh) 1 for 3, 2b, 2 Ks, .300
DJ Wabick (lf) 2 for 3, run, 2b, .278
Matt Smith (2b) 2 for 3, run, RBI, K, .250
Dylan Owen 7 IP, 6 H, ER, 2 BBs, 8 Ks, 3.20 era, W (5-4)

Brooklyn 3, Staten Island 1

Until the season progresses to about 2 weeks or so, I'll just put up the boxscores for the short season teams, there really isn't much analysis to be done until some trends begin to develop.

Brandon Richey (0 for 4, run, K), Eric Campbell (0 for 4, K), Josh Satin (0 for 4, 2 Ks) and Jefferies Tatford (0 for 4, 2 Ks) all took 0-fers. Campbell was our 8th round pick this year, Satin was taken in round 6. Nieuwnhuis was taken in the 3rd round.

Kirk Nieuwnhuis (cf) 1 for 4, 2 runs
Zach Lutz (3b) 1 for 3, 2b, 2 RBI, BB, E (1)
John Servidio (rf) 1 for 3, 2b, RBI, BB
Brandon Kawal (lf) 1 for 3, 2b
Cesar Cordido (c) 2 for 3
Pedro P Martinez 4.1 IP, 4 H, R, 3 BBs, 3 Ks, 0.00 era
Kyle Johnson IP, H, BB, 2 Ks, W (1-0)
Wendy Rosa 2.2 IP, 2 BBs, 4 Ks
Yury Santana IP, 2 Ks, SV (1)

Kingsport 5, Greeneville 7

John Holdzkom, who amassed a miserable 8.31 era in 21.2 innings for Savannah, had an equally dreadful outing for Kingsport, giving up 4 hits and 4 runs in 2 innings to take the loss. Raul Batis started for Kingsport, a 19 year old lefty, and he went 3 innings, allowing 3 hits and a run. 20 year old righthanded Thomas Paredes allowed 2 runs in his inning of work, those ultimately ended up being the difference in the game.

Richard Lucas, who hit .185/.252/.311/.563 in 119 ABs in Savannah, took an 0-fer in his Kingsport debut, going 0 for 5 with 2 Ks. Stefan Welch also took an 0-fer, he went 0 for 3 with a run and walk. Wilmer Flores, the highly touted and hyped 16 year old had an outstanding debut, he had 3 hits including a homer.

Ignacio Medrano (2b) 1 for 5, run, K
Rafael Fernandez (lf) 1 for 5, K
Wilmer Flores (ss) 3 for 5, 2 runs, HR, 3 RBI, K
Jean Luc Blaquiere (c) 2 for 3, run, 2 BBs
Pedro Zapata (cf) 1 for 5
